Mod. Notice Vale Grizzlym

Very sad to hear this news. Grizzly was one of the main reasons I started using BF all those years ago. I found it refreshing to find a space where one could have sensible and intelligent exchanges with people who had genuine knowledge of the game, the club and its history. Grizzly stood out as a sort of patriarchal figure who kept the conversations balanced and real, with a genuine sense of humour. RIP.

Afternoon BigFooty,

I’m Kobi, Matt’s son. Only time I visited here was to learn something new about my old man’s old man, who I understand to be immortalised in the folklore of the forum.

For a good part of my life, Matt was immersed in this community. While I knew that Grizzlym was a figure of some prominence (once upon a time), only recently did I discover he posted 93,000 odd times - equating to something like 30 posts a day over 11 years. Eventually, work and family took precedence and my father didn’t have the time or brain space to post anymore. Who knows though, maybe my mum had a word to him.

For anyone wondering about the circumstances of his passing, Matt died of a heart attack last week at 53 with no previously known health complications. His death was a tragedy, and a complete shock.

My father was a smart, smart man who ironically enough, bared many of the same quirks and eccentricities which he wrote about his own dad having. He was a loving parent, a great role model, and a stable presence in my life.

If anyone wishes to share any stories /ask me any questions about Matt feel free to pm or respond on the thread. Happy to share anything I can.
Condolences to you grizzymjr, wishing you are your family a long life. Thank you for making yourself known, very touching.

The Shhhh posts were always great to read as insight like that often was around a black hole the discussion was unsure of.

If anyone does fish around for the posts about Grizz’s father, please do post a link as I am not sure I know how to sift through 90k+ contributions.

your dad was a good friend and a great mentor who will be deeply missed

no doubt the boss will have been in touch to let you know just how critical a piece of the puzzle he was in helping make BigFooty what it is today

a lot of us waste a lot of time on this website and your dad was no exception - but the relationships he built by doing so were all the more meaningful and impactful for it

In particular the passion, humour and tolerance he displayed on a daily basis whilst doing a difficult and thankless job is something that has had a formative effect on me and has touched all aspects of my life

I know I am far from the only one who can say this

thanks for sharing him with us

Very sad news about Grizzly. Always seemed very sharp with his observations and insights. Way too young for something like this to happen. Condolences to his family grizzmjnr and to the Hawks board. He did you proud.

Vale.

Ouch, what awful, crap news.

Unfortunately I never met Matt in person, but he felt like an old friend, such was his genial manner. He had a fantastic sense of humour, and a wonderful way with words - even late last year I was digging up his dad's stories and re-reading them, absolutely classic stuff.

Hard to add anything that hasn't been said, itself an indication of how well respected, and how much Matt meant to the community.

Truly one of the good ones. Vale, may the road rise up to meet you - as you run towards the Falcon parked at the Pearly Gates, with Saint Peter softly gunning the engine...

Very sad news and was my rock when I first started modding and was always the most supportive Admin this place ever had. From writing the rules with me when the nutters board started ( Conspiracy board ! ) we had a lot of laughs together in the early days of that board.

As in the end life gets in the way of moderating here and being unable to devote the time needed as Grizz found out much like myself. Meeting Matt at one of our annual Mod meet ups for drinks was an excellent experience and Matt was the sort of bloke you just sat next to and listened to all he had to say!

You will be missed Matt and R.I.P mate. 😔

I had a few mod discussions with grizz and he was always great to deal with and had sensible solutions to any issues.

I never met him sadly, but I am sorry to year of his passing. He was one of the good ones.

Rest easy in BigFooty Valhalla grizzlym.

What a bummer, he was a great contributor here both in the foreground and the background.

I hope those who knew him the most are well supported in this tough time. They should be proud to see what an effect he had just in our online community here.

Really sad to hear this. I always enjoyed his contributions across BigFooty, even before I was a member and was only lurking, particularly on GD and the Cricket board. I also remember him moderating the Dogs board during the 2016 Grand Final, a memorable day for all Dogs fans.

RIP.

Like what other Mods and former mods have stated, he was just a fantastic support to me when I first became a mod.

He did some magnificent work on the boards but also behind the scenes whenever you reached put to him.

Very sad but grateful to have engaged with him.

RIP Grizzlym.

Oh this is so so sad.

I met him once by accident a few years ago when I was conversing with one of the mum's at my daughters playgroup - talked about footy and she said well my husband is on big footy. Then the next day he was at pick up and I said hello and we had a brief chat - lovely bloke.

What I most remember though is how great he was as a mod - one of the best going around - calm and had a cool way with dealing with idiots.

I am so saddened by this news.

RIP in peace Grizz/Matt

go well

Matt was just such a great human - I thought the absolute world of him and don't think I have the words to honour the great effect he had on so many lives including my own.

We last spoke a bit over three years ago, he had been away from BF for 18 months after the company he worked at collapsed and he had set about making sure the 35 people in his department all found new jobs. Because that was the man he was.

So these are few words that Matt expressed in that PM that I'm sure he would be happy for me to share about how he felt about BF and the Hawthorn board.

"And you know it when I say I missed you all."

"And it’s nice to be clear, just enjoying a bit of banter. It’s like going back into an old pub and nothing has changed. People, furniture, the whole ‘way we were’ still applies."

Edit: I would just like to add, if Matt had a profound effect on you, it's no less or more because you never met him face to face, his wisdom, humour, and wonderful nature absolutely transcended that. As I said, i thought the world of him.

May he rest in peace - we have lost a good one.
