Well technically Fyfe never won a brownlow medal while playing for Fremantle, it was always after our season had finished so can you even count those two??

Lachie Neale is very much the same player he was here but at Brisbane. If you learn anything from the brownlow count this year it should be that the umpires remember to notice players when they see them doing well in the coaches votes, hence their slow starts in brownlow votes compared to coaches votes, and that the umpires generally vote with what they know.

Good God man. 'rewording' doesn't make Neale a Freo player.

Or Fyfe 2.

My goodness. Have a Snickers.

The only club to have drafted either of Nathan Fyfe or Lachie Neale was the Fremantle Dockers in 2009 and 2011, which is the point. That Fremantle managed to pick four brownlow medals with pick #20 and #58

Hands up who agrees with Freo's crap trade policy..

No. It's not.

Let's be clear. Neale is at Brisbane. Fyfe is 1 player,

THAT is the point.

Reword it any way you want. It's not a pat on the back to Freo in 2024.

It's the opposite. We embarrassed ourselves.

I'll reword it anyway. Fremantle are batting far above average on talent identification as measured by the number of brownlow medals won by players they drafted.

Drafting is elite, trading is our major problem.

Why are you wilfully ignoring the point? You're the one being silly here.
The point is about drafting, not the fact he isn't here anymore.
You're the salty one mate.

I mean, it's nice and all but Neale really did stop being a credit to us in 2019.

What it is is encouraging that our current crop who we may be on the fence about now (Erasmus, Treacy etc.) have obviously been identified for a good reason from good recruiters. That should give us a bit of hope that they'll come good. That's more the positive I take out of it.

That's absolutely a fact.

We've had two players poached by QLD sides who lost their captain to a Victorian team while under contract and being paid big bucks - needing to find somewhere to dump that huge coin. This is how Weller was bought with a huge front loaded deal to Gold Coast and how Neale was lured with a huge deal to Brisbane.

Do not believe the Dayne Beams PR exercise about sticking around at Brisbane, that deal back to Collingwood was being worked on mid season - hence they started looking for their replacement.

I was really worried this off season that a club was going to throw $15m in front of a Dogs player leaving them with nearly a million bucks to spend in 2024 and a heap of picks - that kind of draft/trade weight leaves a huge splash and the player they buy with it leaves a hole at the new club they then seek to fill.

That's the primary driving factor behind big movement years at the draft from my observations, someone offers a huge deal to a player which creates a void at his existing club which dominoes along until the salary cap momentum runs out in local player extensions and front loading.

We've been on the wrong end of those many, many times. It's the side of the Colin Young deal that people haven't yet started to complain about. Brad Hill poached under contract for massive deal, good for both, Fremantle left with $600,000 salary cap hole to spend, look who signed extensions shortly after. Colin Young players. Young gets paid both amounts.

It's smart management from the player manager.

Fremantle with long contracts for required players should hopefully put that to bed outside of our fringe players, at least for a little while.

I understand all that, and agree.

Now, lets answer the question.

How does Neale winning a 2nd Brownlow at Brisbane help Fremantle in 2024?

Aside from the development of a player taken in the 50s hopefully being comparable in 2020 to 2023 as it was in 2012 to 2016? That's the value to me. Finding the player, giving them the tools to build their body and game, giving them game time and then they flourish.

These are the players we are hoping to take similar career paths. This is where we become a better side.

Michael Frederick - #61 2019
Brandon Walker - #50 2020
Corey Wagner - #57 2022

Not our current front line guys but if the talent identification and development is similar the benefits in 2024 won't be insignificant.

Lachie with another brownlow medal does more to show that it takes the Vic media getting interested in you to win anything in my opinion. He couldn't even get AA winning the greatest number of disposals ever, then the following year Mitchell wins one and they can't stop talking about how the most disposals ever was such a feat!

Lachie doesn't have a single brownlow if he stayed at Fremantle. He is also short about a million and a half bucks.

And we likely have a worse squad as we don't bottom out as hard, so we don't cash in on 2019 and 2021.

No mate the point is that you said other clubs and oppo fans would be laughing at us. That we’re the laughing stock of the league after Neale won his second.

My point was that everything I’ve seen has been the complete opposite and have seen dozens of people talk about how good our drafting was to get four Brownlow medals from two later picks. The only people bagging Freo for trading him that I’ve seen has been Freo supporters like yourself. It’s been 5 years. Get over it
