Personally hope he doesn't leave, he's tough as nails and really good overhead mark for his size. Can be a bit reckless with his kicking, he's certainly butchered quite a few forward entries over the last couple of years, but is still young and developing. At the moment he is depth for us, but has certainly looked comfortable when he has come into our best 22.

Rumoured that we have a 2 year 600k a season deal in front of him for 2 years, but has a 3 year deal from either you guys or Collingwood as well, for possibly slightly more a season?

Definitely of worth, as I said I hope he doesn't leave. Great kid from all reports too.
shit 600k is a lot of coin

Yeah maybe a extra million dollars in the kitty
Don't mean I'd pay Long bloody jongs a extra 300k more a year then what he is worth.
Much rather give all the extra salary to wright Miller and fiorini
No very true indeed, save that money for the future, but we may see some players who you think would get less, command more because of it. Give it 10 years and I reckon your average joe will be sitting at about 450k a year with the money going up.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. Happy to be a part of the community. Here is the final report. Not many changes, just a few grammatical things (and the removal of the DRAFT watermark, of course). I also posted this to the afl subreddit, if anyone is wants to see further discussion over there.

Feel free to share this around, although please don't credit this handle (Wallross). The content, LATEX formatting and parts of my username will burn all my online accounts.

Had a decent look rather than a skim. Good stuff.

But unsure about the calculation of the mini-draft points for the Jaeger pick. Agree that we traded picks 4 and a mid-first round pick for Jaeger + pick 31 (for some reason I know this off by heart).

But if we use pick 15 as a conservative mid-first rounder, then I get about 2,500 points of value to GWS not the 1,400 odd in the report.
Somewhere around 2,500 points is in line with what we paid for Jack Martin (pick 2) and what the Demons paid for Hogan.
Yes, that makes the draft points difference b/w GWS and the Suns worse by about 1,000 points or a late first rounder.

Pick 4 is 2034 points. Pick 31 is 606 points, leaving a remainder of 1428. The value of the compensation pick was difficult to determine, as I couldn't find where exactly it landed in the draft. So I picked my wording carefully and said that pick was worth at least 1428 points. Sorry if this wasn't explicit enough.

Ah I see.
Needed to work out the history of that pick so I went looking. Hard to find, but I think I worked it out.

The mid first round compo pick in question was originally granted to Geelong as part of the compo for Gaz.
Ended up being activated as pick #9 in 2013.
So 1469 draft points.

The History
  1. Geelong traded the compo pick to GC for pick #15 in 2010.
  2. GC traded the compo pick in 2011 to GWS (along with pick 4) for Jaeger and pick 31.
  3. GWS activated the compo pick in 2013 as pick #9.
  4. In 2013 GWS traded pick #9 and Dom Tyson to the Demons for pick#2 (Josh Kelly). It was used on Christian Salem.
It is clear on Wikipedia that it was traded from GWS to the Demons but not where it came from originally.

$600,000 is hilariously overblown for Ling Jong.

He's got an awesome work ethic (seriously, he could barely kick 40 metres two years ago), so he's a worthwhile club-man, would likely fit into our Best 22, likely to improve even more - but not for that price.

You only have to look at the salary cap and do some basic maths to know $600,000 is way above the average salary as it currently stands (even taking into account the salary cap will increase in subsequent years, the current average wage stands at under $300,000 - and it's not going to inflate that quickly, likely to stay under $300,000 for a few more years yet - and then you have to take into account the multi-million dollar contracts, say for players like Gary Ablett, Jr., that cut giant chunks out of that pie for other players - let alone the myriad of contracts for Top 22 players that are at the more accurate $250,000 - $600,000 mark).

This can be slightly fixed with a club's Veterans list, but the reality is we don't have any of those - there's no way we could responsibly offer $600,000 to a B-grade midfielder (not that I am saying this is real, but clearly too high to take as anything close to real - that type of money is reserved for a team's best paid / marquee players, not their fringe players or those with middling talent).

exactly

I think most people would benefit by trying to write up a basic wage budget, personally:

38 players.
$10,600,000.
Divide that between our list and see how difficult it is to dish $600,000 out for even our best players.

draftee wages (say, four players) = 500,000 = averaging 125,000 per draftee player
fringe (12 players) = 2,100,000 = averaging 175,000 per fringe player
best 22 = 8,000,000 = averaging 364000 *rounded up* per best-22 player

as a reference: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-11-24/how-much-does-an-afl-draft-pick-earn

best 22, wage breakdown:

top 5 players = 3,000,000 = averaging 600,000
next 7 tier = 2,800,000 = averaging 400,000
lower tier (ten players) = 2,200,000 = averaging 220,000

Then you have the multi-million dollar contracts, supposedly - that money comes from somewhere (e.g. Buddy, Gary Ablett, Boyd, et al).

edit: also, looking at the below link (cutting the Veterans allowance), I can see why the Roos delisted so many of their veterans now...

Would think a fair bit of it is AFL approved out of the cap for the promotion of the game in China.

The thing is these numbers get thrown around by those in the media who will only have a rough estimate as player wages aren't completely disclosed. FWIW I think all clubs salaries should be released not because I care about who is being paid what, but because at the moment there are cetrainly question marks over how some teams are staying in regulation with the cap and this would be the only way to legitimately police it, as lets be honest, if the AFL can sweep something that could dampen the image of the game under the rug, then they will have no problems doing it.

Don't think Ive ever barracked for an opposition team harder than tonight!

The hawks are done. They looked too old, too slow, too many passengers. And now poor old Jaeger is going to come in and have the weight of all the supporters expectations on his back to re-invent that line-up. They are going to expect him to be the one that keeps their midfield ticking. No rocking up and expecting a 'ship whilst being eased in.

And at worst their first-rounder is 14.

Hopefully that'll bring a halt to hawks fans walking around like their s*** don't stink.

How exciting is the Western Bulldogs vs. GWS game going to be next week.
2 very free flowing teams!
crazy to think that either the bulldogs or gws will be in the grand final. not many people would have predicted that at the start of the season.

I am surprised at how much the Gunston and Breust chemistry and effectiveness has worn off especially last night. They used to be deadly accurate too but now seem to miss regularly, if Breust had of hit that goal dead in front when they were up a few goals it may have made a big difference last night but as soon as he missed it the Bulldogs sniffed their chance and took it, they never looked back.
In the end the Hawks just had nothing left in the tank and no amount of tricks or experience could combat the exuberant and skilfull footy that WB plays. Interesting to see guys like Lewis, Mitchell etc not really imposing themselves or even being very aggressive. To the Hawks credit while the time has come for them to reset and see if they can reinvent and stay competitive you have to say losing Roughy made it a bridge too far this year.
I think if Smith would have kicked that goal last week they would have had some more time to prep and probably would have made a better fist of the Prelim but no chance of winning the flag this year.

The loss of Lake, Roughead, and Hale really hurt the Hawks all year. Long-term injuries to Ryan Shoenmakers and Spangher made things worse. They've looked very short and lacked tall timber all year (most noticeable whenever they played against the Roos).

In any case, the window isn't closed for the Hawks until they're out of the Top 4 for an extended period. And until Hodge and Mitchell retire, because they're the two most integral members of the Hawks IMO.

I genuinely think it's going to be GWS to win the flag, and that depresses me (being a Suns supporter, being so far away from the other expansion team).

GWS don't have any players playing who look anywhere near the size of Martin Garlett and KK
About time we turned some of these boys into Men.

Kade Kolojashnij? KK was put on a strength-focused pre-season training regime, he was up to 90kg if I remember correctly. Then he caught that mystery abdominal illness (did we ever find out what that was?) and lost about 10kg, wiping out all the work of not just the 2015-16 preseason, but the one before that as well. Bit harsh to judge him for not having enough muscle after that.
