We gave players like McLarty and McMahon 2 years and players like Gault and Kelly 5.
You could go to every single VFL match and every single training session and you’d only get the tiniest window into how a player is developing.
How well are they listening, paying attention to, and following team instructions? How are their own PB’s and KPI’s tracking? Do they have chronic injuries? Are there any off-field issues?
People are quick to want to delist players when there are off-field issues, the thing is us punters only see a tiny fraction of the off-field issues that the club sees. The only ones we become aware of are when there is undeniable evidence that makes its way into the public domain - video, SIA, etc.

The little I saw yesterday I tend to agree. He definitely offers something at centre bounce.

We will never win a premiership doing that.
We should play him in the middle for a period of weeks in the VFL. This is where he needs to develop.
Yup. Give him macraes spot. Long, Allan and reef starting mid.
Macrae should be played elsewhere in vfl.

It’s often said that the worst job at a cricket club is the captain of the seconds because no one wants to be there.
Collingwood’s Josh Fraser would demur at the idea that it is the same for a VFL coach. His job is to make sure the Magpies have as many AFL-ready players on-hand as possible on any given weekend.

Nonetheless, he’s been exceptionally busy with his magnets this year. Collingwood have churned through 34 players in the first half of the season. That’s about par for the competition. What’s incongruous for a reigning premier is that five have been debutants and two others club debutants. A rash of injuries has forced the Magpies to dig deep.
“You never quite know when an opportunity is going to present, and sometimes it presents sooner rather than later,” Fraser said.
“Some of them have been ready for opportunity before now, but the health of our list has dictated that they’ve been playing VFL. It’s exciting to see them get opportunities at AFL level and stand up in our system really well.”

In reality, inexperience is pinching a little. Two weeks ago, Collingwood faded to give away two premiership points to Fremantle. Last week, after a bright start, they were overrun by the Bulldogs. Now on King’s Birthday they meet a Melbourne team doubly goaded, by a narrow loss to Collingwood in a qualifying final last year, and a humiliating beating from Fremantle in Alice Springs last week.
That’s for senior coach Craig McRae to deal with. Fraser’s work really is man management. He has, for instance, to deal with the enigmatic Ash Johnson, who floundered on his emergency return to the AFL forward line last week, which was not so surprising since only a couple of weeks ago he was stationed in defence in the VFL team.
“For Ash, it was a great circuit breaker to go back and see the game from a different vantage point,” Fraser said. “We’ve seen him play AFL football, and play it well. Sometimes you go back to the VFL and the game can be completely different for many reasons. What you’re looking for is that contest and effort. It was a new challenge for Ash, and one that I think served him well.”

Fraser (who says he is one of a cooperative of coaches) has to manage Fin Macrae, who was touted in the pre-season as ready to nail down a permanent AFL spot, but has not yet.

He has to manage with care Ed Allan, the Magpies’ first pick in the 2022 draft who had to wait and watch players from further down the draft order, two from supplemental lists, and Category B rookie Wil Parker all slipped in for senior games before he did. When Allan was drafted, Parker was a cricketer.
Fraser said the key was regular and honest conversations. “Everyone’s journey is different,” he said. “Some players get an opportunity before others, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re more ready. Sometimes (such as in an injury crisis), they’re not quite ready, but they get a taste and they can come back to VFL and apply those learnings and be better for it as well.
“We want to make sure that when their time comes, they’re well-prepared for AFL footy. It’s unique to each individual as to where they’re at in their own development. The strength of our coaching group is that we treat each player individually.”
Fraser said it was not simply performances at VFL level that determined if and when a player was promoted. Training mattered. So did attitude. McRae made his name as a development coach, so he is right across this.
Sometimes, a footballer simply has to wait. Fraser says Harvey Harrison, taken at No.52 in the 2021 draft, was one. “I felt Harvey’s been ready for a little while,” he said. “But because our high forwards have been so strong, he’s had to bide his time for a little bit.”
Fraser said Harrison grasped quicker than some others the work ethic needed to survive in AFL footy, and now would benefit from it.

Still in reserve for the Magpies are their first two picks from last year’s draft, Harry DeMattia and Tew Jiath. “They’re two guys who’ll have bright futures at the club, but their journeys will be different to Harry’s (Harrison) and Joey’s (Joe Richards), and Lachie Sullivan’s,” Fraser said.

For the VFL coach, there is less glamorous work also at the other end of the list. As players are picked or held in reserve for the senior team, vacancies open up in the VFL team, to be filled by supp players from the suburbs and the bush.
On this long weekend, the AFL Magpies play on Monday, which means it was the last team picked, which makes for uncertainty back down the line for the VFL team, who played at Casey Fields on Sunday, and the junior clubs who provide top-up players and who mostly played on Saturday. It’s standard footy club business, but a headache nonetheless.

Yup. He isn’t going to play inside mid at afl lvl, so why keep playing him there. Wing or HF for mine. all my opinion of course Jen.

Thats up to the coaches where they think he can play. But his priority in the pre-season needs to get stronger in the gym. Thats more his concern, so he doesn't get pushed around as often. Come back like Josh Daicos did back in.. 2020/2021
But he has the endurance to play wing, if he can learn that role. And the wingers role isn't easy though, its a bit different to the general mid role.
If he is to learn a new role, needs to spend the whole pre-season there. Not just a week or two before having to play that specific role.

That was not my intention. It was a pretty dirty day out at Casey Fields. I doubt any Collingwood players will make the coaches votes.
