Victorian Covid Outbreak 2021

At least we're lucky in Victoria. 18 months ago the Victorian government addressed this issue with 1.3 billion in funding for 4000 icu beds for future covid cases.

No issue here at the moment with beds.

Huge Expansion Of Our Health System To Fight Coronavirus
31 March 2020
Victoria’s health system will receive a massive $1.3 billion injection to quickly establish an extra 4,000 ICU beds as we respond to the coronavirus pandemic and protect Victorian lives.

Shame you can’t pull nurses out of thin air to staff them with.
Are they on your hit list of professions you don’t like too?

Is your point that our health system is, or at least should be, resourced to handle the load of COVID cases? And I'm assuming therefore you see it as a reason that we should be open by now?

To be honest, it seems a valid point. I'm no expert, so I don't have the answers - but I've plucked some numbers which may give some context....

Singapore is at over 83% fully vax'd.

They have 1000 ICU beds.

Their case numbers (requiring ICU or hospitalisation) jumped from 61 to 139 last week.

I think they're up around 1000 cases per day.

They've just announced restrictions in response so they don't overwhelm their system (no gatherings, work from home).

So I think in perspective, compared to Singapore, our current response in terms of restrictions isn't too heavy. It's on par really.

AMA saying Victoria should have ramped up hospital capacity 18 months ago. That’s March 2020. Because nothing happened our hospital system is in crisis and things will only get worse before they get better.

For one reason. Because we put all hopes and dreams into covid zero.

I get that. But "Scommo" is criticised ad nauseum on this forum for the slow rollout of vaccinations due essentially to the same reason - a belief that zero covid was possible and there was no race.

If only the "Huge Expansion Of Our Health System To Fight Coronavirus" promised by Dan Andrews on 30 March 2020 had been legitimate and not puffery!!

We are preparing for the worst – but if Victorians stay at home and protect the health system, won’t need all of this extra capacity, and we’ll save lives.” Daniel Andrews, 1 April 2020

Surely letting it back in is the issue here?

That is THE issue. We eradicated it. It didn't exist in this country, and life, aside from international travel, was normal.

And we let it in. We ****ed up quarantine. More than once.

I still really can't believe we blew it.

Did we improve our health system at all? I don’t really care about the number of 4000 beds, but did we add anything since March 2020?

Been saying this a lot. We had the country at zero. At ZERO. For weeks.
And THEY let it back in. Yet then we all have to pay the price. And most of the finger pointing goes to us. I can’t get my head around that.

The ONLY way we could have kept it out was to become a hermit state, and that is completely unsustainable unless you are North Korea receiving handouts from Russia and China

Exactly.
Hermit state is manageable and acceptable when there is no vax.
Once there’s vax you have to quickly adapt or face being left behind to the rest of the world.

It's THE one thing that I can't get my head around. How did we stuff that up??

There was ONE way, and one way ONLY that COVID could **** us - and that was if we didn't get quarantine right.
And we ****ed it up.

Then, once we all worked out arses off and got back to normal again.....WE LET IT BACK IN AGAIN FFS!!!!

I genuinely can't get my head around that. It still makes me angry just thinking about it.

The one thing I despise the most is what you have just mentioned. 10000%.

Perth says hi.

Half of Australia says hi.

NZ says hi.

I mean seriously, what a complete an utter ****ing load of dogshit that logic was at the time, and now even moreso.

It is so stupid that it is barely even comprehensible.

Not a single person was ever saying we should block the borders forever. Not a single person was even saying we should block the borders at all!!

It was about getting quarantine airtight, and keeping our lives normal and open here until we got vax'd.

And we completely and utterly blew it.

Knowing what we know now about the Delta strain do you honestly believe we could have kept it out of Australia and lived as close to normally as possible? NZ has shown that even with the harshest lockdown it can still seep in. But NZ is one of the most isolated countries in the world with a population less than that of Melbourne.

I mean, FFS. Seriously?

Who would you rather be right now?

Perth, or Melbourne? Seriously.
Perth, but I'll be amazed if they can get through this Scott free (no pun intended). At the moment WA is the closest thing to a hermit state and Mark McGowan is shit scared because he knows that at some point he has to open his state up and that's when the shit will hit the fan.

Keeping it out is different to stamping it out once it gets in. The latter is flaky, especially if the index case floats around for too long. Keeping it out is not an issue for an effective quarantine system.

Why did we need to let travellers in?

Getting people home who live here I can understand.. I’d rather have just sent all this jobkeeper money to them to survive financially before coming home once we were vaccinated. Or sorted out a way to get them home safely and Covid free.

How many cases emerged where people who had served quarantine, tested negative and been released later tested positive?

By the way, the NSW outbreak was unrelated to quarantine

But this is the point....we let it in. How could we let people out of quarantine, only to find they were infected when it's too late!!??

It's just beyond perplexing.

IMO, it either had to one or the other. No Aus Open, no travellers, no Hollywood A-Listers - no one.

Or....get ****ing quarantine right FFS!!! Let as many people in as you want, but make sure that when they leave quarantine, they don't have the virus! Make sure that anyone that works there, does not leave with the virus!!!

That's what quarantine is.

Honestly, the worst thing about it is that we ****ed it once. Then ****ed it again!!!

It's just unbelievable.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but we completely underestimated the Delta strain. As I posted earlier the NSW outbreak wasn't even quarantine related - it was the result of a Bondi limousine driver who transported infected international flight crews
