Victorian Covid Outbreak 2021

Is that a bit of a myth though?

She was locked down too. They only opened up when we did. The rest of the time they spent 'living with it' was when they had no cases wasn't it?

She was clearly less in favour of snap lockdowns, but then the whole Dictator Dan schtick aside, so was Andrews.

TAS, NT, SA and WA are much quicker to jump to lockdowns.

The thing was, Gladys built her brand off not locking down, so even when it was clear to everyone that she needed to properly lock down, she didn't, until it was too late, then she did.

It seemed like she held off for so long partly out of not wanting to look like Dan / Victoria, ie, her pride got in the way.

It's good to see the NSW numbers tracking the right way now though. What a shit 3-4 months for them.

They had the Crossroads outbreak last year which they successfully managed without locking down. Which was quite an impressive feat - definitely the largest outbreak squashed without lockdown. But lead to the 'gold standard' overestimation of contact tracing, which nearly got them with the Northern Beaches outbreak, and then did get them this winter.

Delta really did make it worse for everyone hey. Both state and federal governments haven't handled it well, albeit in different ways.

The sad thing is there is no guarantee another resistant strain won't develop.

But we knew about Delta.

Scomo even blocked travel from India FFS!! The when everyone cracked the shits, he opened it up as it was before.

Madness.

My point was, that they never lived with it.

They got it to 0. Either through Gold Standard contract tracing, or lockdowns.

In the scenarios where they had heaps of cases, they locked down the same as the rest of the world did.

More broad brush than myth. See the Northern beaches as an example of the different approach. But if you dont accept that description, fine with me.

True, it was a cascade of failures.

It was important to bring people home, but that comes at the expense of letting the virus in.

So then you rely on quarantine, which sucked.

So then you rely on lockdowns, which sucked.

So then you rely on vaccine rollouts, which sucked.

And here we are.

Cant agree Dans approach has been similar to Gladys. Sydney had local closures, Dan was happy to close Melbourne (thats why I went bush late last year.)

As for WA, its version of life behind closed borders is close to normal. Lockdowns have been short & sharp.

Andrews did the localised lockdown thing last year initially. It failed spectacularly. Thus ending up shutting down the whole city.

It worked with 'some' of the Sydney areas, because they generally seem less mobile than Melbourne. Northern Beaches is effectively an isolated enclave.

It started similarly. We had postcode based lockdowns, remember when the people were stuck in that tower? No one complied with the rules and it ended up a city wide lockdown with a ring of steel.

NSW insisted on the LGA approach and stuck with it far longer despite it clearly not working, and it took them months longer to deal with because of it.

Delta beat NSW, it had been dealing as described.

Pause to VIC roadmap looming?

Focusing on the case numbers is misleading. It's all about the vaccination rate (which is tracking well, probably a few days behind target because the targets were ambitious) and the hospitalisation rate (which has halved as the impact of vaccines kicks in).

The targets are interesting, we are pretty much bang on the projection for 80% 12+, but a few days behind on 16+. I think the 12-15 uptake came on a bit quicker than they were expecting, so for the time being they've taken away expected doses from 16+.

We ended up getting the easing last week before the 80% first dose target was actually met, so I think they are able to adjust for it.

Yep, the kids have really stepped up. Makes the initially reluctant boomers look bad.

October 26 will be interesting.

Will people have a meltdown because nothing happens on that exact date, because they didn't understand that was an estimated date for the target 70% double dose?

Or will the State Government make changes on the 26th anyway, even if we're not quite at 70%, because people will have a meltdown if changes don't occur exactly on that date?

I wonder which age group has the highest rates of anti-vaxx / vaccine hesitancy / muh freedoms.

Teenagers more than likely aren't it, they seem less prone to buying in to the disinformation campaigns on the internets.
