I would love to know how they came up with which teams get What Zones?
There seems to be some tying in with VFL alignments and by extension TAC cup
Carlton - Preston,
Hawthorn - Box Hill
Melbourne - Casey (Dandenong)
St Kilda - Sandringham

and some tying in with a club's heartland or areas they're targeting WB - Ballarat & western suburbs
Geelong - Geelong
Hawthorn - eastern suburbs
Essendon - north west suburbs

I suspect it's a tradeoff for a large zone in the NT
Great. So we miss out on a big region that develops a consistent AFL level player, so we can have a big zone in NT which will most likely net us a one trick pony that will play 2 good quarters out of 3 games. Give me a big metro/country region in VIC over a NT zone any day.

I think you find better Chances with Aboriginal Boys the Multicultural Kids on making it.

Though go home factor be there

We get more than Oakleigh. Sandringham would have all of Bayside, Dandenong would get South Gippsland, we would get from like Glen Waverley to Caulfield or something. There would be 200,000 kids in that zone.

So how did we get Oakleigh?

Then how did the NT Zones where Decided?

F*** this shit. Get Hine and crew to start identifying the best 12-15 years old in the country that qualify as multi-cultural or indigenous and pay for them to move to our zone in Melbourne or NT. Payments for the academies are outside the cap.

If it's here, whether we like it or not, maximise our opportunity, within those rules. Better to spend the money on this then the Irish type of experiments.

I am with you Bay Pie the "smart" clubs will exploit this initiative IMO they would be "dumb" if they didn't.

Start to see a lot more Haileybury or Caulfield Grammar scholarships. ;)

Exactly......the AFL have made the rule I just hope Eddie & Co can exploit it to our advantage.

and Lucky we got a Zone in the NT.

Did Jurrah come from that Zone?

No - as someone else mentioned he's closer to AS

And Hawks also got a big NT Area. How many Hawks Men work on the AFL?

Hawks easily win in my opinion, but only if the AFL decide to give preference to clubs who are delivering services to these regions, my understanding is that decision is yet to be made.

That region the Hawks have has some quality kids that will benefit enormously in development of their football from a young age. I've played Katherine DFL which includes both Victoria Daly and Roper regions, we were the only non-indigenous team in the league back then, and there are some seriously good kids playing community football.

Regardless which clubs win out on this, the indigenous communities involved will benefit enormously which will have a massive, massive knock on affect across a range of things least importantly football.

Well done AFL

This is not a substitute for the draft. In other words, I suspect underage players who are already in an elite set up will be automatically ineligible to be in an academy. Whilst a region like Northern Vic might develop consistent AFL level players this area is also very efficiently scouted - I doubt there are many gun underagers that get missed by the TAC clubs. The NT on the other hand has a lot of talent and not much scouting or elite programs.

That's irrelevant as we would get them from anywhere. I bet little Jimmy Davis Leon's son is from our NT zone too. he is the only multicultural FS we would be getting...

True but they would work in the Academy we would set up

That doesnt matter unless they are multicultural. Are the Macedonian Marvel's kids multicultural enough?

Eddie is buying them a Macedonian passport as we speak ;)

Does dual citizenship count?

Oh, I could not possibly disagree with you more!!

We're not talking about picking up players like Darcey Moore cheaply, it's about picking up players like Ben Richmond and Darrean Wyatt.

What are the chances of us picking up a player in downtown Oakleigh who is new to the game and would flourish in a development program? Wouldn't have thought it'd be high?

Contrast with the NT - it'd be full of talent (just as Victoria is) but without the development opportunities - until now.

IMHO Geelong are the big winners here - getting the coveted Darwin region. They can set up a development program up there, build up their profile, even host pre-season games at a stadium up there, send the players to train up there in the off-season. Great opportunities. Melbourne have done well to get Alice Springs. And Essendon would be mightily chuffed bagging the Tiwi Islands - they are mad for AFL up there!
