I like the idea of zones in the NT and northern Australia in general, but zones in Vic just reminds me of the bad old days when teams got either ridiculously advantaged, or disadvantaged by their zone.

I wonder how many white kids will suddenly have 'indigenous heritage' if they're in the zone of a team they want to get to...
It does, at face value, look easily exploitable.

Oh, I could not possibly disagree with you more!!

We're not talking about picking up players like Darcey Moore cheaply, it's about picking up players like Ben Richmond and Darrean Wyatt.

What are the chances of us picking up a player in downtown Oakleigh who is new to the game and would flourish in a development program? Wouldn't have thought it'd be high?

Contrast with the NT - it'd be full of talent (just as Victoria is) but without the development opportunities - until now.

IMHO Geelong are the big winners here - getting the coveted Darwin region. They can set up a development program up there, build up their profile, even host pre-season games at a stadium up there, send the players to train up there in the off-season. Great opportunities. Melbourne have done well to get Alice Springs. And Essendon would be mightily chuffed bagging the Tiwi Islands - they are mad for AFL up there!

According to the internet, the Barkly region has a population of 8,077 people :drunk: and the entire NT only has a population of a little over 200k.

I seriously doubt there is a lot of talent there (excluding talent that has already been identified and in the system)

From the Barkly region - yes I agree, that's a lottery ticket.

From Darwin / Alice / Tiwi? Wouldn't have thought it'd be too far out of the realms of possibility to pick up a player better than Ben Richmond.

Geelong and the Hawks are both big winners. Its far more likely for them to find indigenous talent in the Geelong and Gippsland regions than in central Melbourne, and same in the Darwin and Kimberley regions than Barkley, which has an incredibly sparce population at best.
In fact, I'd go as far as saying we probably got the worst possible allocations of any team.

We only have to find 1 or 2 Really Good Talents

In such a HUGE area with such a tiny population that will be exceedingly difficult one would think

But not Impossible far as we know there can be some Kids out there with a Heap of Raw Talent

I'm not a fan. I'm also not a fan of the northern academies but I can at least see there is an argument for their existence. What are the actual point of these zones? What are they going to achieve that couldn't be done by the AFL running their own academies?

AFL gets to save money by making the clubs pay for them themselves I guess.

This whole system would be far far better if it was an impartial AFL-run academy and then all clubs got a fair share at the promising kids.

I say the Kids Have more Chance of Getting Drafted when they are in a Acadamey to a Team then just a AFL one

I'd like to know how exactly a kid is deemed multicultural enough to qualify for this?

Was Petracca foreign enough, Lumumba or Majak at the time of drafting?

I've seen pale skinned gingers pronounce themselves as indigenous.

Yeah okay.

A slippery slope bound to be exploited.

P.S-The hawks got Gippsland. They win.

What a surprise.

I don't think you realise how wrong this comment is. Connection to culture and country isn't about skin colour.

There is more to this then finding a future Brownlow medalist in the middle of nowhere

This is a good thing, it's about giving opportunities to many that are lucky to see a game on to each week. The Vic/Daly/Roper regions are good communities to work with. IMO much better than the Darwin and Tiwi regions which already get large exposure and support through NTFL clubs through strong junior programs already. There is already an AFL academy in Darwin for junior footballers.

It's more social responsibility for me, if we unearth one player or 50 players that play for any AFL club we've done our part.

The AFL is also increasing funding to clubs to support this though aren't they

The AFL said the Acadamies would not be counted towards there Tax. So yeah No Cap on Money that can be spent and I dare say the AFL will help out too
