Ethnic flags, Flares and riots is passion? Hmmmm There something wrong with ya bro. Listen i booked an apppointment for u to go c a doctor. Sorry bro infact ur living in the wrong country. All you's r are a bunch of try hard hooligans. NO WONDER THE SPORT IS GOING NOWHERE!!!

One of the worst nights of my life.

A war zone from start to finish.

Half time entertainment consisted of bottles and flares being thrown from 1 side to the other.

Pitch invasions, broken fences.

Both sets of fans are screwed in the head, the preston element that had fans from sydney were terrible, the bandwagon greek element was on display as well.

Ah people fighting with police horses, and then no one knows what happened on clarendon st after, apparently someone got stabbed.

It was the worst thing i have ever seen.

We will be a laughing stock tomorrow on the news no doubt.

Oh and yea their was a match played and preston won 1-0 in injury time.

Well done losers for spoiling it for the rest of us.

In saying that police were a disgrace, had no control.

Preston fans had flags up, they were allowed 2 remain.

Then south fans reply with some flags of their own, and bang you have police horses running over innocent people.

Im dissapointed with some south fans, especially the bandwagon ones who turned up for this match only, they dont love the club, and should never have dropped to the level of the presyon fans.

If we had played it smart preston would be out of the league now, but we are just as bad im afraid, i tried to tell some people to calm down and that preston beating south is like a grand final for them and to let them enjoy their moment, because beating south and violence is what they live for, well dont to the south morons who made us look bad.

I will never forget this nite, and i have never seen bjs like that in my life.

Tell me about it living in the wrong country.

I am not a hooligan trust me. I just think the VPL is a league with clubs with a history and culture, something lacking in the APL. I am not in anyway condoning flares and I would be the first to complain if a Heidelberg supporter threw a flare on the ground.

About today's happenings, it is very disappointing that South fans got to that level. I am a Heidelberg supporter, but this does affect every club and the sport in Victoria. Desira and Lowy will be rubbing their hands with glee.

What's happened has happened, we have to learn and move forward. While there will always be racial tension, most of us do not want fights to break out. I know that tonight only a few people from both sides started it but it affects everyone.

If anyone got stabbed, it will make it even worse and heads will roll.

Oh and please, lets not turn this into a 10 page thread about why the A league has to happen etc etc like we always do.

I am disgusted and do not condone what happened.

So please to outsiders dont use this as an opportunity to slag the vpl and some of the clubs, we are talking about idiots who are in the minority.

Plus desira and all the news channels will put the knives to south melbourne tomorrow without doubt.

This made 2002 tynan eyre cup look like a christmas party, no comparison worse thing i have seen in this state.

I want everyone on this forum to remember that most supporters of the VPL will not condone this activity and I hope that the league can mover forward.

We are all Australian's and better than this sort of stuff

firstly off the bat, both sets of supporters are dead set ********wits so no passing blame onto one supporter group.

in saying that though, on our behalf many that started the trouble i had never seen at a south game before especially the ones wearing heidelberg scarves that were first to run over at half time and after the game

Don't pass blame? But you say that Heidelberg supporters were the first to run over?

I Wasn't there so I can't really comment, but I'm positive that Heidelberg supporters are not the reason for this. It was just a section of idiots from either side that ruined it for the real supporters who will be back supporting their club next week who have the interest of their clubs in some regard.

Here's Desira's take on it in the Current Bun:

Rival Fans In Pitch Violence

Flare-up: Fans get ugly at Bob Jane Stadium.

Two ethnically opposed teams are likely to play future games behind closed doors in empty stadiums after crowd violence marred a game in South Melbourne last night.

Soccer authorities are likely to enforce the measure after supporters of South Melbourne and Preston Lions invaded the pitch at the end of a Victorian Premier League game at Bob Jane Stadium.

They threw bottles and flares at each other until mounted police arrested ring leaders and, on horseback, herded the mob back over fences.

"The chief of police told me they won't sanction any further matches between the two clubs so, if the soccer authorities don't act, the issue may be forced by police," South Melbourne president George Donikian said last night.

Donikian, the Channel 10 newsreader, made passionate appeals before, during and after the game trying to calm supporters, but in the end admitted the behaviour of fans on the terracing was indefensible.

More than 45 police and another 40 security staff kept things largely under control until the crowd invasion, which was sparked by a last-minute Preston goal that gave them a surprise 1-0 win.

The match was the first league encounter in 12 years between South Melbourne, which attracts support largely from Melbourne's Greek community, and Preston Lions, almost exclusively backed by the Macedonian community.

The two neighbouring European countries have lingering bitter historic rivalry and the simmering unease between the two communities in Melbourne was brought to a head on and off the soccer field last night.

The match drew about 9000 fans and the tension was obvious, despite police ordering that the two sets of supporters be segregated at different ends of the pitch.

The kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes while officials took down politically motivated banners from the Preston end, which taunted South supporters with a "welcome to hell".

Also, security staff had to extinguish flares amid chanting and finger-pointing by the two sets of supporters.

The two club presidents pleaded for calm and the tension subsided once the game got under way, only to resume at half-time -- until Donikian went on the public address system warning that police would order the game be abandoned.

The second half eventually started and the match was headed for a goalless draw until Preston scored -- by former South Melbourne player Steve Manceski.

Before the end, South Melbourne asked its supporters to stay in the stadium for 15 minutes after the final whistle to let Preston fans leave.

But plans were thrown into chaos by the last-minute winner. South Melbourne fans invaded the pitch and advanced on Preston supporters who had jumped fences to celebrate with players.

Police on horseback got between supporters to restore calm and made arrests, but the situation disappointed soccer authorities.

One such authority was Manny Galanos, the chairman of the Football Federation of Victoria, who had insisted on additional precautions and security to avoid unrest.

Although the two clubs had not met in a competitive game for more than a decade, a friendly pre-season match between the two clubs in September 2002 to raise money for the Police Association was abandoned when Preston supporters invaded the pitch and clashed with police.

Preston and South are due to meet again this season in the return match at Preston, but last night's disturbing incidents could prompt FFV to order the fixture be played without any spectators being allowed into the stadium.

Both clubs face fines of up to $10,000 for the 30 flares that were thrown on to the pitch.

This is what gets me.

A Preston fan is allowed to run onto the pitch at half time with a flag to taunt south fans, and then run back and jump back over to his position behind the goals and not get touched.

Then 1 flare is lit in the terraces, and the cops come down with the horses and almost kill everyone, ****** its just a flare their was no need to start smacking people out.

Now we are hearing that preston had their own security for the match, and that south fans had to contend with the full on cops.

If true its an embarassment, as part of the arrangements we are forced to move from our clarendon corner spot to accodomate the preston fans, then we get a raw deal on security thats pathetic from our board.

Anyway bottom line is Preston were on their last warning and should be kicked out of the league, that was the first time in the vpl that south had done something bad and dont get me wrong we should cop it as well, but if preston dont get booted it proves that the ffv have no balls.

I must say, our "fans" (bandwagon id1iots) who invaded the pitch were flipping stupid, just because prestons fans live for this sort of stuff, it doesnt mean we have to drop to their level.

Before the fans are blamed, security occupying the preston end dont deserve a cent, those offensive flags especially the greek one in red/yellow should have been taken down and that was put up before kick off. A disgrace.

I pick up the Herald Sun this morning and see it in the news section, so I go down the street to pick up The Age (Michael Lynch normally does a good job covering the VPL) and not a word about anything is in there, not even the result. He's in New Zealand covering the V8s! Wrong time to travel, Michael.

Sounds like the police did a pretty good job controlling the tensions, but it's not what the game needs after Bonnyrigg-Sydney Utd. Another chance for the doomsayers to kick the sport.

blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame ..................

always someone elses fault, it was preston having flags and chanting, it was the police on horseback, it was the heidleberg supporters coming to make trouble, it was the comittee for making us more to a different section of the ground.

all we are hearing is excuses.

stand up and be men..........

your supporters are no better than preston, heidleberg, Bonnyrigg, sydney united, dandenong or numerous other teams around the country....
the simple fact is your supporters are exactly the same.

you don't make mention on the thread that south melbourne supporters kicked/pushed down their own fence after the match. not the fence to the stadium, but the fence to the playing surface.
you don't make mention of the fact that after the game south melbourne supporters tore apart an unused kiosk stand, trying to find makeshift weapons, ripping brances off tree's and started running towards the preston lions exit to confrunt preston supporters.

Note: the preston supporter who ran onto the pitch with the flag at halftime was taken away by police.

south melbourne are no angles, you have a long and chequered history.
just a bunch of gutless wonders.

shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AH Well u can all get over it now!!! From reports it looks like it was the last time you saw your so called beloved clubs play against eachother. U ********ING TRY HARD HOOLIGANS get a life.

Didnt i say that both sets of fans are as bad as eachother?

At least we didnt need people coming down from sydney.

If those hellas people were fans they will turn up next week again, but they wont because we arent playing preston, i dont have time for people like that.

Preston fans should not have been allowed in, or they should have had members of both clubs only.

Like i said it was your last warning, hopefully they give your club the boot, and hopefully our club gives the boot to those moronic id1iots that turned up for 1 thing only.

So much for you guys bringing axes and knives, at the end of the day you were all talk, i am ashamed that some of our "fans" dropped down to the gypsies level.
