First quarter there was a 2 goal turn around on the scoreboard with Taberner playing on and Darcy being adjudged to have given away a ruck infringement free kick before the siren.

A short patch in the 2nd quarter where they kicked 3 goals in as many minutes.

A couple of easy misses in front of goal in the final quarter.

Not far off.

We tried hard but were outclassed which I knew we would be. It’s just a shame that we not only have to be up against it in personnel but have to get a raw deal from the umps too making it even harder.

Our weakness is our midfield and it was obvious tonight. We missed Fyfe big time and outside of Mundy and Walters, we don’t have any clearance winners. Darcy got killed but thats no shame.

Overall I was happy with our effort but just disappointed in a few individual efforts and the bewildering decision to not play Blakely who is proven at the level and could’ve helped even up the midfield battle.

Game went exactly as expected.

Eagles forward line exposed our lack of key defenders. JK especially bullied Cox all day.

Missed Fyfe and to a lesser extent Hogan. Even moreso when the blokes replacing them is someone like Banfield. A trier but nowhere near the best 22 of any top side going around.

But all in all Eagles are just a better footy team right now. So much more composure and smarter decisions than us. Not surprising given the gulf in experience.

With the importance of the players we had missing I expected a 6 goal loss. So probably about what I expected.

My glass is half full, there was a lot to like.

I didn't think we'd win going in to the game, so instead of a win I was looking for competitiveness, structure, player development etc and I wasn't disappointed.

How good was it to see Frederick emerge! Cerra, Brayshaw, Serong and co couldn't give us this much last year, it was good to see them step up.

Without runners being allowed in swarms for the coach to give instruction any more, on field leadership is important. So it kinda hurts to not have the captain and other members of the leadership group when you have a young, raw team otherwise we might have repaired a few holes in the fences along the way and the margin would have been closer. Also, to again defend like last week with so many key backs missing was impressive, particularly given the quality of opposition forwards.

We could have done with his big body in the midfield - or defence for that matter.

They dominated clearances. Tapped out the back to their defensive side where they gained a clear mark then just chipped up boundary lines, bombed it into Darling and Kennedy and that was the game. Keep the ball in play and make some of the lesser eagles player panic and their skills drop away pretty fast. Their contested marking was great though this game.

We tried to be a lot more daring, using the middle and taking riskier kicks. Skills still a work in progress. We dropped our heads in the third and stopped running and creating.

Probably doesn't need to be mentioned but the Tabs/Lobb misses were super deflating. If we nabbed those I think we could have won. I just want to shake Tabs sometimes and scream you are the key forward, act like one. I want to see the bloke demand to be the bloke who wins the game. I think he thinks more about the consequences of missing. He should watch the MJ doc or something.

Tried valiantly. But just too many outs.
The first quarter was a real positive. Tabs was monstering them. We moved the ball fast and with poise.
West Coast always kill us with McGovern and Kennedy. No key talls for Freo makes it difficult. We didn’t lower our eyes. Midfield got on top.
Frederick was brilliant. Real positive.

Cant expect too much. That’s about as best 22 West Coast have, bar Shuey.

The first quarter. That’s the Tabs he’s capable of. He was pumped and ready to kill mode. Honestly, let him kick with his right! On his left he overthinks.

Banfield and Schultz were like actual traffic cones. Colyer not much better. To think that Frederick has been sitting on the timber all season waiting for game time behind the likes of these guys. Serong was probably our best after half time. None of these guys would have seen game time yet if we were fully fit squad. None of the kids have let us down yet. Stop playing list cloggers who won’t be around in 2 or 3 years time and pump games into lad who will like Frederick.

The fact that McCarthy and Matera ain’t in this team is a bad sign for those two. Matera would’ve been handy as a small forward around the packs, but Banfield at least is fit and treats AFL as a profession. Matera and Cam need to take that approach.

Pretty disappointed but that felt a bit different to our other recent derby defeats. With those there was a sense of inevitability that no matter how much we dominated certain aspects we wouldn't get the reward on the board and they would just pick apart our system and counter-score with ease.

Today I felt like our system was matching it with them but we just didn't have the personnel available to take advantage of it, and they eventually just wore down an undermanned team who battled pretty valiantly for the most part.

When the Weagles were up & running, their spread was like a training run, that was where we really got smashed. But, they have been a midfield combination for 5 or more years.

So much to take out of the game in regards to lessons & adjustments on our set up around the contest. We were, in general, too close the contest & when we did win it we battled to extract it from the area because our structure was too tight. We were too intent on winning it on the inside that we didn’t have the numbers on the outside, particularly when we got tired.

WC can do that with their eyes closed, we need this year & another preseason to get that cohesion with our young group.

I wasn’t too unhappy about the result.

We were competitive with a team in the premiership window with Half of our best 22 not available.

Too many youngsters with too many role players.

Darcy, Brayshaw and Cerra all need another preseason to go full time. Serong needs another three years.

Fredericks is a revelation. Smarts, Skills and Speed. Can see him on the wing in 3 years.

Hughes skills have improved and has won me over from a person wanting him out of the team.

Half full.
Thought cox was decent against a legit power forward with (at times) very little pressure on the ball carrier
Frederick showed plenty
Brayshaw Walters Ryan Wilson Hill Duman solid
Acres pretty decent but needed to be put inside more imo
Bewley was decent, but he’s very soft
Lobb and Tabs glimpses but bad misses
Serong showed a bit, just out bodied
Tucker Banfield Colyer Hughes poor
Darcy well beaten
Cerra shows so much, then undoes with an awful kick.
Aish worst gane for us, few horrible decisions
Kills me to say, but Mundy looks like he’s done after this season.

Glass half full for mine.

Expected the loss - hoped we would do better at the center bounce, but that was a wish in hope... it looked like boys vs men in there at times... no disrespect to our midfield intended, as clearly they're still developing, but there's still a missing ingredient in there for mine... very interested to see who else may get a shot in there next (Valente / Crowden / Giro / North?? - they gotta give these guys a run at some point, and we need another bull / extractor in there to act as a foil for Serong).

I think it's telling/interesting that with even all the outs we've had, Blakely is still not getting a game. We know he's got the talent, but I don't think this is 'new toy' syndrome in leaving him out. Two to three years back I thought him a midfield / HB lock... something's going on there though I've no idea what (interesting also the team website lists McCarty as a midfielder... maybe a run on the wing is looming?)

Loved Michael's game - need to keep him in the side, and encourage him to take the game on, try stuff and take risks for the rest of the season... He's got far too much talent to risk him going back into his shell with conservative advice.

Ignore Tab's brainfade... he's still one of the most threatening forwards we've got. Darce did okay, but NicNat still monstered him today. He'll get there.

Cox did okay all things considered - too many outs and too many weapons to cover. He reminds me of a taller stronger Sutty... smooth mover, great talent, but something's not clicked for him yet.... I still believe he'll get there with time (I remember how long Tabs took... talls can take a bit of time to come on.)

Watching Durman try to take on the Weagles key forwards body-on-body reminded me of how many guys we've lost back there. (No disrespect to Durman, I actually rate him highly... but he was outmuscled today... no shame in that.)

I can live with the loss, I expected the umps to go in dry, and there's plenty of existing talent (logue, moose, hambling, fyfe) and new talent (Henry / Valente / Sturt / Young / Butters etc...) to come. Gladss still half full... but I also really want some of our fringe mids to start making a case for themselves... there's a list cull a-coming shortly and nobody can afford to be complacent.

As I said in the positives/negatives, I'm leaning towards half full with the benefit of hindsight.

But a one-goal half still isn't good enough; Frederick today showed more (in pretty bloody trying circumstances) than a lot of seemingly first-choice players. They need to be looking at the repeat offenders and saying "what does this bloke add that playing a new bloke won't?"
