Prediction Rd 5 Changes vs Port

So when will that change?
Playing as the sub when the heat of the game is gone.
We needed speed and options, seems short sighted.
JLo doesn’t appear to understand attacking footy. Kicking 9 goals won’t
get you far. Especially when most of them were from free kicks.
yes lets play to our weaknesses and open up the game to score more goals, great idea!

I agree 9 goals is not enough, but the last sentence about goals from free kicks is a bit triggering for me because I've been hearing it from whiny Blues fans all week.
6 goals from free kicks means that the forwards are playing to the game plan. They are expected to apply pressure and not give opposition any kind of easy break from defense. When the opposition defenders are a bit slow or clumsy, that pressure creates opportunities to get free kicks, and free kicks inside 50 create chances for goals.
It is not, and shouldn't be, Plan A, but its a very strong Plan B. Plan A is clearly to move the ball quickly to a forward who's on their own, but against better teams that doesn't come up every time.

I bet that's not how he feels about it.
Even if he's sub there's a chance he's activated early, and if not gets a quarter at AFL level when hopefully the whips are really cracking.
Especially when it’ll be JOM that starts off 3 straight games of being a sub.
Hardly a solid fitness base. One played has been playing full games.

Are Port that great? Don’t watch many neutral games.
jury still well and truly out, i dont rate them. beaten eagles, tigers and the bombers. lost to the dees. we went with them very well last year and expect a better performance this season. i think we are a good match up to them in the middle and i reckon our defence will really limit their forwards. will come down to how our forwards perform, hopefully after last week they start actually taking some bloody shots at goal when the chance arises.

They were a good side last year.

They are better side this year, they have fixed there weaknesses from last year. There ruck was an issue, as were key defenders.

I am not sure they have a weakness (maybe Dixon's lack of Durability), there midfield is top 2 in the comp, there forward line is dangerous especially when Dixon is fit, and there backline is good.

Allir can't be allowed to jump at the ball, if you can push into him and limit his effectiveness and expose the backline 1v1 in other areas maybe you win.

GWS spanked them in the middle last year in the final, but that was a brilliant midfield display with a dominant ruck. I don't think that will happen this year, with Soldo rucking.

They look the same as last year. Flat track hard but still iffy against the best (until they prove they're not).

Somebody showed the stats after the Dees loss and their backhalf is still a massive problem even with the new personnel.
Re their backline...if they don't intercept mark it, they are poor.

If we bomb long and blindly to Allir and ER they will have the opportunity to carve us up on the transition.

A strong possession game, while making them defend will serve us well.

Yep. They also give you a good look on counter because the high press. Will be interesting to see if we try and exploit that.

We'll get smashed if play poorly though.

I have a couple wishes for Ras this week

Don't miss simple handballs
Don't miss simple kicks

but the main one, please please please go back far enough over your mark that your kick isn't smothered

Thinking the sub is between JOM or Johnno for some reason
Ironically, his kicking has been better than his handballing this season. Has been handballing to no-one at times.

WAFL level wise I think he dominated last weekend and finally showed he’s capable taps aside.
Maybe, I'm only going off what I saw in the pre-season.

My fear is we use Reidy in the middle and then get smashed in the clearances, while Dogga is standing at CHF scratching his goulies.

We would essentially turning our one true area of strength on the ground into a possible weakness, and if that happens players like Rozzee and Butters will make us look like AFL merchandise mannequins.

He definitely dominated his match-up, but Kody Eaton was not a strong match-up: just getting his feet wet at WAFL seniors level, undersized. Would've been interesting to see how he handled the Scott Jones match-up this week were he not the traveling emergency. I do think he's taken a step up this year, and fwiw playing as well as he did last week after traveling to and from Adelaide would've impressed selectors.

On the plus side, Knobel gets to show what he is at the WAFL seniors level against tough opposition. He's way too good to be spending most weeks just dominating his WAFL reserves match-up.

Port should've beaten the dees though, dees were super accurate for once

Expected score had port well on top

Port 88 from expected 99
Dees 96 from expected 65

It was a hell of a game for the dees goalkickers

You need to win the midfield battle, move the ball quickly from the middle and make the most of your inside 50 opportunities.

I don't think you can dominate the ruck contest, like last year. I wonder if the mids staying deeper, is to limit the opposition getting clean exits from the midfield.

If expected score mattered we'd be the 2013 premiers.

The Dees took their chances, but Port absolutely smashed them in every stat and still lost and they have history in that space. They have an amazing record against bottom 10 teams under Hinkley and a toilet one against top 8 and especially top 4 teams.

I'm not changing my opinion until they actually beat a decent volume of top 8 and top 4 teams. Until then, I've got them in the flat track category.
