Write up from the club on the Beagles game with Rob Wiley’s thoughts on each player. Most of the comments are pretty generic but his comments on Hough might be a pointer to this weeks selection

Brady Hough: In great form. He defended extremely well and gave the side a lot of attack showing he is ready for an AFL call up

FWIW, I’m in full agreement

The bit about Jai Culley

Why would Culley be tagging in a WAFL practice match?

Potentially because they see that as a role for him at AFL level. There’s some merit in that, especially against sides with bigger bodied mids

Don't like it.
IMO we need him to be first to the ball dishing it out, not tagging someone and being reactive to a player.
Hunt that ball Culley! We already know he loves a tackle so its not like the defensive side of his game is a problem.

From that article:

Harry Edwards: Put up a solid fight playing down back for three quarters. The last term saw him play in the ruck, giving us great contest and used the ball well.

Edwards rucking because no other option, or with no Nic or Jamo maybe thinking of giving Edwards a run in the ruck against Freo?

Rotham played ruck last year and in the preseason match against Adelaide. He's another option.

They no longer do it as much but they used to get kids to tag a few years back to help them learn off the best and improve their midfield craft. Scott Selwood was tye last eagle to do so.

Culley’s midfield craft is still a work in progress and he is very reactive at stoppages. Learning from elite mids is actually a great way to develop his craft

Yeah don't mind Rotham in that role but doubt they bring him straight back in

I was more asking whether the lack of options for this week was the reason they gave Edwards a go in the ruck in the last qtr or was there just no one else to do it in the WAFL side

He’s already reactive. He’s fairly new to being a mid anyway. Playing on the best will allow him to learn not only how to hunt tye ball but also the running patterns of the best inside mids

I don't see the problem with Culley tagging so long as he still keeps his usual style. Take Windhager of the Saints for instance: he played successful tagging roles against Kelly and Neale and still had time to gather 20+ disposals in both games.

If he's playing the ball winning tagger role I hope the club explores bringing Kane Cornes on as a mentor. Best I've seen in that role at his pomp.

Absolutely agree, we did it with Yeo who was not an intuitive midfielder at all early days and I always forget how lost he looked in there initially, even when he did stints around the time of his AA HBF year. Became an absolute beast in there who whilst still not a Pendlebury got his nous up enough that it wasn't a real weakness.

Tagging I feel has died not because it's ineffective but because it's often a negative thing for a side's development to play a Crowley (who long term will always be a Crowley) ahead of someone who could use those minutes to develop into a good, rounded player. But if it actually helps development I reckon go for it. Will probably be a good thing for our side this year (we won't be winning many midfield battles head to head without damaging their plans a bit), but mostly will be an excuse to have him in the guts as much as possible, max exposure, whilst still playing him in a role that benefits the team right away without waiting for him to be a stoppage master and is simple enough for him to have some confidence in - don't want to knock him down by having him feel lost.

That being said if mid season he's played a bunch of AFL matches doing that and starts to get some rhythm, if he's dropped for whatever reason I'd want him to be moving towards being the main man at WAFL level, build confidence there in actually being proactive and beating up on lesser opponents when he gets the chance.

And for amusement

What's the equation?

Aish & Lewis vs Sheed, Yeo & Karpany?

WCE on the losing end of that one, but needs more time to evaluate properly.

i really rate Lewis, reminds me a lot of Daniel Kerr

Beagles play Subi on Saturday morning in the final scratchie before the season starts next week.

Let’s assume no changes to the senior side this week ie Chesser holds his spot and Hewett plays as sub again (or maybe they switch). Let’s also say no one is held out, maybe one of the AFL emergencies plays limited minutes.
