RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace says opportunity will knock for the Tigers in 2009, with a "decade of opportunity" to kick in from 2011.

"What opportunity that is, no one knows, but, certainly, it will be a time for us when two age brackets (of players) meet," Wallace said.

Wallace yesterday revealed detailed planning relating to Richmond's current and future playing list.

He said successful clubs needed many of their good players in the 22-26 age group.

"That's the age bracket that wins premierships," said Wallace, entering his third year as Tigers coach.

A graphic accompanying his plans suggested the club prediction for this season was a ninth-placed finish.

"A holding pattern," Wallace said of Richmond's current state. "Whether that be ninth, seventh, fifth, 10th, we don't know. We expect improvement, whether that's finals, who knows?"

Wallace and other key Tigers executives yesterday predicted a bright future for the club, with revenue streams improving yearly.

Chief executive Steven Wright said a $1 million profit was expected this year.

Wright said he hoped club debt would be down to $3.5 million by the end of 2007, from $5.2 million in 2004.

With a $7 million redevelopment of Punt Rd to begin soon, Wright said the mood at the club was bright.

"This is a great venue and we want to stay here. We definitely don't want a Lexus Centre-type facility," Wright said.

MATTHEW Richardson says he is ready to take on Carlton in Round 1 on Sunday despite having played only one game in five weeks.

The Richmond forward, who needs 10 goals to reach 700, strained his hamstring in the NAB Cup match against Geelong on February 25.

"I'm feeling really good," Richardson said yesterday.

"I had a small issue in the Geelong game, but that was five weeks by the time we play, and anyone who knows anything about hamstrings knows five weeks for a very minor hamstring is more than enough.

"I've done full training now for a couple of weeks . . . could have played last week if it was a regular-season game."

The Tigers will have Adam Pattison and Trent Knobel doing the ruckwork in the absence of Troy Simmonds (broken ankle). Simmonds is expected to return in Round 3.

Wallace confirmed that promoted rookie Cam Howat would play his first senior game against the Blues.

This is finally an article I can actually derive something from. As mentioned in other threads, earning respect, being a solid unit, ra ra ra etc is all smoke and mirrors.

This is finally touching on reality. Sure we want to "improve", but that improvement is basically getting the kids developed further, and winding down the older hacks who will never see success.

I can handle us being mediocre for a few more years, because it will take that long to see the Tivendale's, Hall's, Gaspar's, Johnson's etc to be no longer with us.

I'm also not going to write off any of our kids just yet, we have quite a while to see if any of them will have any upside. 2011 sounds realistic.

(Waiting to see all the responses crying to f*** Wallace off because he's taking so long.)

I wish you guys had picked franklyn instead of tambling. s eriously, you ened a talented but erratic goofball with atitude problems to take over from richo when he goes.

Agree Harve, as I said the other day...

As far the side goes, we simply won't be a success until the kids we've drafted over the last three drafts are our best players, and I get the feeling that's still 2 years away yet.

Was most chuffed when I read that Terry agrees with me.

Been mentioned a few times. While the proof of the pudding blah, blah - That draft involved some pretty interesting poker playing. I still think Hawthorn tried to bluff us to take Roughead by taking Franklin at 2.

Hate to break to ya, but Franklin went at 5. Roughhead was the suprise going at 2.

1. Deledio
2. Roughead
3. Griffen
4. Tambling
5. Franklin

so if gaspar wont be around in 2011 what the hell is he doing here?

he knows we are a long way off but is still playing a pretty senior lineup trying to get his win/loss ratio as good as possible

on ya terry :thumbsu:

??????
Aiming for mediocrity again?

Apologies for intruding on your board but I have just got to ask whether you all get sick of the crap that comes out of Wallace's mouth? We have a problem with Thompson in that you would barely know whether he is alive (is he?).

Wallace seems to have a fixation in either reading about or hearing himself every bloody week espousing some so called unique revolutionary idea that is just marketing bull****. Remember the NAB 15? Why do we all need to hear about it? Who cares? It has almost got to the stage that he will call a press conference when Deledio is constipated to put a positive spin that it will allow him to think about his game while sitting on the can.

Sorry to ramble but he ****s me. If there is such a thing the tigers are my second team, having grown up in one of their old recruiting zones and having gone to school with a few players.

i perefer the old adage, one step at a time. If TW is going to make forecasts then lets talk this year...I don't like long term predictions, bit of a smokescreen diversionary type tactic. I wanna hear about setting the bar to the next level for some of these kids. Lids, Polo, Foley, Tambo, Raines...Top10 B&F finish required

Honeymoon is now over...

on victory we thrive

Eat'em alive Tigers:thumbsu:

Didnt he say he had a 5 year plan, and that you would be playing finals this year or next.

You need to get rid of this man or he will continue to make hollow promises.

TW is trying to manage expectations.

He has probably seen through the preseason that we still have a way to go in replacing Gasper, Johnston, Richardson etc.

Year 5 was always going to be the start of the fruits of our labour. He did say that you can re-build with some success along the way, he just didn't ever define "sucsess".

TW, Miller and co. have managed the feral supporter quite well, and in doing so have created the timeline they need to rebuild a team from scratch.

On the eve of a new season he comes out and says he expects to finish 9th or so.

So people call it setting a low bar or spin, I think he is just relistically managing expectations.

I do cringe at some stuff. especially when he wades into debates that have nothing to do ith the tigers.

But as to what he said in the article is all pretty much spot on. We have no real qualtity between 23-27 and have to wait to deledio, raines, tambling and co start getting to this age group before we become a consistently good side.

If you read the first line of article you would see he said 2009 would be the begining of finals and the real cracks at the flag would come at the flag in 2011 when deledio will only be 24!

That is not what he said we he first started, he said the club would be in the finals in the third year, pushing for a flag in his fifth, now he's talking about only making the finals in his fifth year.

He's just looking to hang around.
