Rumour Waters to replace Glass as Captain in 2011

IMHO the best captain in the AFL is Brett Kirk from sydney. He has the respect from all players his own and the opposition, Beau Waters is the same type of player, he commands respect and as shown through out the year he has gotten it from the boys.

Best person to take over the reins and will make a awesome captain.

I tend to agree. Not the best player in the team, but has a real crack, is respected around the club, puts his body on the line and leads by example.

Exactly the sort of traits you want in a captain.

I think Glass is well past it and needs to be replaced. I don't think Glass should have been made captain in the first place so happy for him to stand aside.

Why not give it to McGinnity or Lynch?

Did you read the rest of his post  Or just the part that made it seem like you had a valid argument?

Waters would be a great captain because of the respect he commands of the boys and the club i.e. they would play for him (not that they don't play for Glass), he's easily the most courageous player on the list and I imagine would be a good type to fire the players up when needed.

Beau - best 22.
Lynch - not best 22, off to the GC.
Mags - fringe, too young.

I swear people on here just argue for the sake of arguing. Beau would/will make a fantastic captain!
Im just giving another opinion which is a healthy thing.

The question is in a year or 2 will Waters be good enough to be in the 22? If he is captain he gets automatic entry which will close the door on someone elses opportunity. A captain should be comfortable best 22 not close to fringe. I suppose it doesnt matter anyway because Woosha will play the senior players regardless.

I believe this would be a good choice.
A young fresh captain in the mould of woosha to hopefully start a new era at the club :)
I believe he has relished the opportunities this year when he's been made captain and it could help him take his game to a new level.

I like Waters. If he can fix his disposal up, there's no reason why he wouldn't be a good captain. Hard at it, courages, determined. Maybe a little young?

If he promises to never kick across goal ever again, then he might be an okay captain.
We should put it in his contact. He can kick across goal 10 times during the whole season, any more shall result in immediate termination.

He'll be 25 next season, so nah.

Hmm, not sure about Beau as i'm not sure he will always be best 22.
Hurn will always be best 22 you'd think, so he might be a better choice.

Should not be captain due to the disposal issue. The comparison with Glass is not valid, because Waters is a 20 disposal a game player, FB is the only position on the ground where sub standard foot skills can (kinda) be overlooked.

This sums up the hardness > skills approach which has gutted our side, seen people like Priddis, Selwood, McGinnity and Selwood jnr brought on and given key roles, even though they are fatally flawed players. When every other club has been going mad for footskills over the past few years, we have been picking plodders.

Why include Scooters? He kicks better of his left than any of them kick on their preferred.

Why is the decision on who should be captain based on kicking efficiency? Shouldnt it be based on the ability to captain?

Exactly. Leadership ability is what's required for the role. In a team so deficient of it, I think Waters style of play could help in showing the way to the rest of the group.

Whilst I agree with that in principle, I do think that putting someone as captain who is often a liability sets a pretty poor example for the rest of the team, and could potentially set a double-standard (not dropping the captain, but dropping others for similar mistakes).
Young players seem to take captains pretty seriously as role models, and I don't know if a principle of "you can f*** up as much as you want, but if you try hard you'll be in the team", however romantic it sounds, is the right one for a young team, particularly one with our disposal issues.

Hurn isn't exactly lacking in work ethic, team work and leadership experience, but also is a better and more reliable player.

hell yeah

wouldnt be surprised also if he was given the captaincy he didnt step up a level - he strikes me as the sort of person who responsibility sits well with

great post (his not mine)

That is all true, but to be fair to Waters he has had games early in the season where his kicking was good to great. Fitness would of played a part towards the end of this season after a long lay off, and he just screams captain in every other area of his game.

Good captain choice if true, genuinely wants to destroy the opposition. :thumbsu:
