And these will be blokes who started potting him after his 3rd game.

They saw a full season, realising he was part time, watched the following year and have been saying it since.. They're not right, and theyre not wrong..

Hindsight says we should have taken selwood ahead of gumby..

What all this does show is you don't need number 1 picks to build a list..

Of course you don't.

Talent helps, but it's all about development... and patience.

Watts has shown this year he will be a player, a number one draft pick doesn't have to be the best player from that draft. As long as he becomes an excellent player I won't care who we didn't get.

One thing is for sure, hindsight doesn't say we should have taken someone else (and I'm not trying to say he is better than Hurley, etc). He's had a great year for us and is growing as a player every week.

Look I agree with what you just wrote.

Looking back Hawthorn took Hodge before Judd, even though Judd is a fair bit better than Hodge, I dont see it as a mistake.

Players like Tambling and Myers have been mistakes, Gumby is a bit harder to judge as his whole career has been destroyed by injury like Darcy Daniher who just retired at 21.

This is turning out as a win win all round, even if Watts is not quiet as good as the other 2 in this thread.
When 3 clubs end up with a player who can play KPP or Ruck as good as these 3, each team would be laughing.

I'm not saying that all melbourne supporters should but I have a few mates that follow melbourne that are always saying that they should have taken Naitanui or Hurley..

JW is coming along nicely, just need to leave him forward and NOT give him the licence to go to half back.

I agree with the puppet master too, every time JW gets it these days, something good generally happens. He has come a long long way this year.

So have Hurley and Naitanui though. Look forward to watching the 3 of them over the next 10 years!!!

And I've got mates who barrack for Essendon who reckon they'd love Watts. That's why you have opinions.

Agree with your second point though, Watts needs to be given a structured role rather than being used as a band-aid around the ground. Fingers crossed it doesn't ruin him like it has with Cale Morton.

Hindsight says you should have taken Selwood instead of Gumbleton because Selwood is one of the best mids in the competition, has won the Rising Star and Army Medal, a best and fairest in one of the best teams ever and a pair of premiership medals. Gumbleton is just about the unluckiest and most injury prone player in the competition, and has barely strung a few good games together.

When the Watts and Hurley debate reaches that point or even close to it, I'll agree with you.

Wat. Has been constantly injured and is rated by the coaches who have him in side every time he is fit. Clearly best 22 and looking very promising at 22 years old.

Sorry, The best thing ever was picking Myers ahead of Rioli, Grimes, Dangerfield, Taylor. These players would be top 10 players on our list.

Whomb since you think Myers is not a mistake, shows how much you know.
Myers is a mistake. Rioli is a Gun.

ATM Myers is playing better football than all but two taken before him and better than all but about 10 in his draft and you call him a mistake... get a ****ing clue.

You are blind if you can't see the obvious talent he has demonstrated this year.

Would be very happy with Myers at the Dees. Would prefer Rioli, but you've scored a player here who will be a gem for you anyway.

Jesus ****ing Christ, are you an Essendon supporter? If you are, then were you watching the Collingwood/Sydney games?

FFS!

On topic, Watts is a gem, it's a shame that sites such as Bigfooty require very young players to gather 30 possessions and kick 10 goals every game. Some players take longer to develop than others, but the thing that matters most to the club is that the player achieves their full potential regardless of how long it takes for them to reach it.

Almost no one would take Myers over Rioli, but at the same time almost no one would take Hodge over Judd... Does this make the selection of Hodge a failure? Of course not, as long as Myers can play quality footy on a consistent basis then his selection at no.6 has been justified.

Geez I love Hurley, easily my favourite non Melbourne player, He will be better than Jonathan Brown. Used to know him a little bit through friends but haven't seen him in nearly 2 years. Hard to beat that video but here is one of Watts.

I'm not trying to have a go at watts as I think he could be a very good player possibly better than Harley but isn't hurley the exact type of player Melbourne need?

Harley?

Or did you mean Hurley?

Hurley may be the 'type' of player we need. But if we had Hurley and not Watts we would still need another key forward type player.

They are 2 forwards that would compliment each other to perfection. Hurley with his bash & crash style at FF/CHF and Jack with his pace (and once he buils his tank)to roam around CHF/wing like Riewoldt.

Are Melbourne still keen on Alwyn?:p
