AFL players during the pre-season: "we've adjusted how we approach contests to reduce the chances of incidents causing concussion"

Webster: "I was away sick on those days"

Webster just wanted to send a message that they're taking the preseason games seriously.

I think 6-8 weeks is acceptable for the action he jumped off the ground aimed for the head you can't make any other assumptions other than that.

This is a terrible take.

Of course suspensions hurt, they hurt his future contract value, his match payments and probably his performance based bonuses in his contract that a lot of players have
Agree, Webster is likely at the low end of the pay scale with incentivised match payments, if he gets suspended for 6 weeks then he would already miss match payments for roughly 25% of the season. Forsen

It’s going to be interesting how the AFL plays this. Yes you can’t make an example of a player, however the realities are, they have law suites coming, the have a coroner report to deal with & the current climate around head knocks.

The most important thing for the game and the AFL is that they are seen to be taking the protection of the head as a top priority or it’s not unrealistic that over the next 2 decades their won’t be a game anymore, if that’s either by law suites or a legislate body stepping in. This isn’t something for the game to mess around with & it needs to stop.

After the footy ops department was left without anyone in charge for so long Laura Kane clearly has a mandate, seen that with her own challenge to the AFL rules last year, the change of rules that followed & even the change to the tribunal process. I think what she will call for (if the tribunal does it is another story) is going to be a significant message to the competition & to the lower levels. Strap yourselves in, we will be talking about this (and may not have a resolution) up until bounce down on Thursday

Ziebell got 4 weeks for this hit on Riewoldt which knocked him out and was worse than Webster's hit yet people here are calling for 6+ weeks

I don't know about worse probably about the same par and when did this happen well over 10 years ago?

What is more mindblowing is Stewart got 4 weeks for the Prestia hit which he didn't jump off the ground but he did run even further past the ball than these incidents.

How do you not understand that times have changed?

How are you this far behind ?

Times haven't changed that much from when that happened 12 years ago.

The damage to Riewoldt wasn't any less because it happened 12 years ago and the cheap shot from Ziebell wasn't any better because it happened 12 years ago.

The only thing that has changed since then is people's overreaction to a hit like that and calling for ridiculous over the top suspensions.

If Ziebell copped 4 weeks for that hit on Riewoldt why should Webster cop a bigger suspension now?

Some people here are calling for an 8 week suspension or even more which is more than what Barry Hall copped for a king hit on Staker?

That's just ridiculous no matter what times you are judging it by.

It’s not an overreaction. It’s a greater understanding of the damage that are done to a persons brain due to hits like that. It’s an acknowledgment that the game has a duty of care (hence the upcoming law suites)

If anything the example you provide is showing an under reaction.

I get it, it’s a player from a team you support, so you are looking for an angle, but it’s coming off desperate & simple out of touch of the reality in 2924 & everything the AFL has done, with rule changes, interpretations & other suspension over the last 24 months (been just go back a week for your precedent)

You wont set a precedent until the AFL have the balls to suspend a star player who is a chance to miss finals/brownlow. until then a lot of people are just going to think that these rules to protect the head is all talk. i mean look back to last year just before the finals and during and see how they adjudicate its completely different. It costs the AFL to much money to be banning Cripps,Dangerfield or Daicos for 8 weeks so you'll just have a rule that targets no name players unfairly.
