MEDIA RELEASE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has assessed the following incidents from the weekend's round of matches.

Charges Laid:

Dean Brogan, Port Adelaide, can accept a three-game suspension for misconduct in that he headbutted Barnaby French, Carlton, during the third quarter of the Round Four match between Port Adelaide and Carlton, played at AAMI Stadium on Saturday April 16, 2005.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), medium impact (two points), behind play (two points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of nine activation points, which relates to a Level Five offence, drawing 425 demerit points and a four-match suspension. He has one previous one-game suspension which increases his penalty by 10 per cent to 467.5 points. An early plea would reduce the penalty by 25 per cent to 350.6 points and a three-game suspension.

Stuart Maxfield, Sydney, can accept a one-game suspension for engaging in rough conduct against Simon Goodwin, Adelaide, during the third quarter of the Round Four match between Sydney and Adelaide, played at the SCG on Sunday April 17, 2005.

The incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), medium impact (two points), in play (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, which is a Level Two offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-game suspension. He has an applicable good record which reduces his penalty by 25 per cent to 168.7 points. An early plea would reduce the penalty by 25 per cent to 126.56 points and a one-game suspension.

Aaron Davey, Melbourne, can accept a reprimand with no suspension and 93.75 points towards his future record for striking Justin Peckett during the fourth quarter of the Round Four match between Melbourne and St Kilda, played at Telstra Dome on Sunday April 17, 2005.

The incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point), in play (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of five activation points, which is a Level One offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-game suspension. An early plea would reduce the penalty by 25 per cent to a reprimand with no suspension and 93.75 points to his future record.

Other Incidents Assessed -- No Charge Laid:

The report laid on the day against Melbourne's Brad Miller was reviewed. The panel felt that a free for high contact was appropriate but the contact was negligible and did not warrant further action.

Contact between Collingwood's Chris Tarrant and the Kangaroos' Jess Sinclair from the first quarter of Friday's match was reviewed. The panel viewed Tarrant's action as a bump and did not warrant further action.

Contact between Geelong's Steve Johnson and Essendon's James Hird from the second quarter of Saturday's match was reviewed. Johnson's bump on Hird was viewed as not being unreasonable or unnecessary in the circumstances and no further action was required.

Contact between Essendon's Nathan Lovett-Murray and Geelong's Tom Harley from the third quarter of Saturday's match was reviewed. The panel saw the contact as an accident clash of heads and no further action was required.

Contact between St Kilda's Cain Ackland and Melbourne's Brad Green from the fourth quarter of Sunday's match was reviewed. The panel viewed Ackland's action as a bump and did not warrant further action.

Contact between St Kilda's Aaron Fiora and umpire Kieron Nicholls from the third quarter of Sunday's match was reviewed. The contact was deemed to be accidental and no further action was required.

For charges laid by the Match Review Panel, clubs and players have until 10am tomorrow, Tuesday April 19, to decide whether to accept the penalty allocated, or to contest the case.

Agree with the decision but puzzled that it seemed equal to a few others that got punished.

Good to hear! It was a sensational bump, nothing more.

I notice a few papers have been wagging thier fingers at Scarlo. But no mention of him, so more good news.

The new system is excellent...and that's not just because my player was deemed to be innocent.

It's taken out the randomness of previous years.

Sure, cases like Moloney's will register a "What the?", but relatively speaking, we were getting about five of them a week this time last year!

Does this mean Scarlett has no case to answer? Looked pretty clear cut like dropping of the knees. Not severe but I thought he'd get a week for stupidity.

They probably went easy on him for having to put up with the diving budgies theatrics.

That bullshyte acting from Lloyd would drive anyone crazy.
