Reckon the kid needs a pre-season as a HBF.
He is a decent height, decent tackle and has the athletic attributes and kicking skills for the role.

He really struggles with reading the play and staying involved and running patterns are probably easiest to learn off the hbf, where you have the benefit of having the whole game in front of you to learn from.

Reckon he’s got a good athletic profile as well to just follow somebody around until he learns to football.

Don’t have high hopes but reckon he’s a chance of coming on in that role quite well in a similar way to Sheppard.

Would seem to have a sound athletic ability and the strength for a run with, lock down role.

Problem is most great taggers also have footy smarts and could find the ball with limitations (i.e. Hutchings was a very good WAFL mid).

Chesser doesn't seem to be able to find the ball, lacks a bit of footy smarts, presumably doesn't have a Jeremey Sharp type tank, so 1/2 back it is or bust.

We drafted a half back flanker who doesn't tackle, plays a non-existent contested game, and has some injury issues playing only six games in two years. Well done West Coast. We've shit the bed drafting the past couple years.

CC has low footy IQ, but his strengths are his run and carry and athleticism.

Let him play on the high half forward, and give him a licence to run and create when we have the ball.

Reckon Chess was shoehorned into an outside role because of his athletic profile and ball use. In the limited time we've seen him at the coalface I think he has shown more natural ball hunting instinct than Ginbey.

Would like to persevere with that over the preseason. Give him a good look at it until it either clicks or it doesn't. Takes nothing away from him to move him to a back flank later on. We need to see what we've got with the kid.

I think it depends if you can carry the ball or not. You don't need to be a precision kick if you can burst away 20m and kick it over the defensive zone. It doesn't need to lace someone on the tit as long as it doesn't hit a defender standing on their own.

Absolutely, but you build a game plan around your cattle. If Ginbey can intercept, take a bounce and kick it 60m for a front half stoppage, that goes a long way to conceding less repeat d50s. Then it's how we set up behind the ball and play front half footy instead of being pinned in our back half all game.

HBF may be Chester's best chance to cement a position. However, I don't think we can squeeze him in there.

Current defence:

Ginbey Gov Duggan
Hough Edwards Cole

That's without considering: Witherden, Maric and Hunt.

Then depending on if we draft (one of Lindsay, Travaglia or FOS), that player would spend a large percentage of his early career on the HBF.

You could make an argument to omit Cole or move Hough up the ground, but I am not sure the club would agree.

I hope this guy gets a real crack in the middle, as the receiver mid that we probably recruited Kelly to be.
Decent kick on him, and plenty of pace.
He might not be the elite outside mid we want but surely theres something there that he could fill the role until we find something better. At least he wouldnt be on a wing watching the game and waiting for it to come to him.
