Looking at our draw, Jaeger’s mature body is doing to be very handy against the top 3

Hawthorn are effectively tanking for future draft picksWhy were hawks so desperate to get rid of omeara that they are paying 500k of his salary?
JOM turns 29 as you said next year in February.Rebuild. O'Meara is 29 next year.
They now have WB 2nd Rounder and a 24-year-old best 22 Ruckman.
For Freo, we basically bought 500,000 TPP relief - O'Meara was the conduit.
That's not true. We can negotiate existing contracts and extend them while giving them a pay rise this year by altering an existing contract. Eg. Luke Ryan getting signed before his contract is up means we can add money to the contract this year. Eg. So say if he was earning 450k this year before signing the extension we could have added an extra 200K to his contract this year to allow salary cap relief for the later years in his contract compared to if we hadn't paid the extra this year. I expect a deal will be signed with Serong with his 2023 salary going up compared to what it is now soon as well.Either way it's a great result even it it just comes to the bottom line of the club but unless they spend that $500k on someone for next season it doesn't help in retaining anyone.
It doesn't help attract anyone, too late for that as the trading period is done and by the time we can attract someone next year the Hawks have completed the obligation.
Basically we just get a high grade asset at a heavy discount for 2023.
Good point. Like a signing bonus this year for Caleb. Would be good to lock him away in the first half of the year. That's not true. Does anybody know the % of the positions he played last season?

Not desperate, but there was an opportunity to bring in two players if JOM moved according to Mitchell at our AGM on Tuesday night. Why were hawks so desperate to get rid of omeara that they are paying 500k of his salary?

Mitchell spoke about how much he loved JOM as a person and leader, but when the Giants made an offer and Freo decided to throw their hat in the ring it was seen as a way to open up the Meek trade and it also helped us get back into the first round(to grab Weddle).
I don’t know if there’s truth to the “wasnt getting contracted again”. I take Sam on his word that he really liked Jaeger, I could see why he would. He was our stand in skipper along with Sicily when McEvoy broke his neck. And if Hawthorn weren't going to be extending O'Meara's contract beyond 2023 anyway it would be better to get something of value for him immediately given he wasn't going to be carrying the team to finals in 2023.

It’s definitely a clear cut case of taking some short term pain for long term gain. And I think most on this board would agree that Meek will surprise a lot of people next year. He is absolutely an AFL standard number 1 ruck. Not desperate, but there was an opportunity to bring in two players if JOM moved according to Mitchell at our AGM on Tuesday night.

I think he was likely going to get 2 years, which seems like the done thing for us with established players at the moment.Do you think it's in Hawthorn's list management plan to give O'Meara a three year extension? That's the first question his manager would ask and the answer would be absolutely not.

To be clear, unlike with Tom Mitchell who Sam was willing to move on, Sam was not pushing JOM out the door and valued him highly.
What opened this all up was JOM getting on the sauce at Cogs wedding, where he told McCartney that he’d be open to joining the Giants. Turned out the drink was doing the talking, as no one really wants to go play in front of empty stadiums so that changed when it got a bit more serious, but when the Giants made an enquiry with Hawthorn and Freo got wind of the possibility, everything changed.
I could’ve seen JOM playing out his career with us, and it sounds like he could too from what he’s said publicly, but things changed very quickly once the Giants had a nibble.
As in 2021? I think Hawthorn were on the record as saying that they were open to discussing any players, but would only engage the players if the offers from clubs were serious or fair. What if O'Meara being moved on was actually something that began being explored last season?

Breust and Wingard were offered deals at Giants, but said no, and that was that.
JOM was reportedly not pleased with his name not being taken off the table, but he then captained the club and once the trade occurred was seemingly upset that Sam didn’t plead with him to stay.
That tells me that he didn’t have a belief or inkling that he was not going to be offered a contract at the end of 2023.
I wonder if the change in travelling every two weeks will affect him seeing he'd be fairly used to the Melbourne advantage. He's pretty pro in his prep so hopefully a non issue.Mitchell chat behind O'Meara's Freo trade
Fremantle recruit Jaeger O'Meara has revealed a tough conversation with Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell was the tipping point in his decision to pursue an AFL trade move.www.espn.com.au
Most players above the age of 26 had some sort of understanding that they could be part of trade negitiations, because they were all told as much at the end of 2021, as the footy dept was going to try as hard as they could to change the demographic of the list once Clarkson was gone(something that Clarkson and Graham Wright had fallen out over in 2020, which saw him leave for the Pies). It's my belief that O'Meara knew Hawthorn were looking to move him on but he is a very loyal man and didn't want to push it from his end until Hawthorn entertained the GWS advances. Fremantle had been respectfully rebuffed by his management end of 2021 when exploring this.
