This is exactly why I would keep it simple for him - become a close checking backman to have a chance of staying on a list

hes been tried a lot as a defender at bulldogs & last year with northern blues and really struggled. just not up to afl football. 24 soon, how much improvement can we expect?

Its an interesting case. He played some above average footy for the dogs' afl and vfl sides... but that was interspersed by some pretty average stuff (primarily at afl level). Personally, I see this year as his last chance - we are light on up forward so he'll get a chance at some stage. He just needs to put a few games of consistent footy together. Nothing amazing, just enough to provide a regular -- and reliable -- target.

mezz, are u getting louder or did I start off deaf?;)

Jones doesn't have the passion for footy, plain and simple. It'll be his last year in the AFL this year, guaranteed.

Is it passion or self belief? I would lean towards the latter. Though after so long without building a better fitness base, I can see where you are coming from.

well reports say he trains well, even barry hall has said so, i believe he just relies on his athleticism and doesn't have have a footballer brain. Doesn't now when, how, or why to run to certain spots on the ground. Just leads up at the play and jumps at the footy trying to mark on his chest rather then use his dukes. either no one has taught him how to run as a forward or he refuse to learn how to.

I would love to see them put 12mths into making him a defender - a fresh start. He has the athletic requirements and IMO training him to fullfill a negating role would be no more of a gamble than believing that he will make it as a complete forward
The Bulldogs did try throw him back and he just gives away free kick after free kick, panics to much and grabs on to his opponent.
I don't think it's his thing but if they are to try please do so in the VFL side.

Isn't he contracted for 2017 as well?

That he is but with another flat year, and with a couple of upgrades likely, then he could be down on the rookie line come 2017 or we could bite the bullet and suck up his final year of contract. Hopefully he's been doing his own training in the off-season to build that tank.

A Zac Dawson type might be OK under Ross Lyon, but it simply won't fly under Bolton and the game plan he's trying to introduce.

Liam Jones ranked tied for 20th for contested marks in the AFL per game in 2015. Imagine what he'll be able to do with a full season of a team kicking to marking targets instead of aiming for the boundary line.

Wow, with three players ranked inside the top 32 for contested marks in the AFL per game in 2015, it's hard to see us missing a premiership berth in 2016. After all, Hawthorn only had one player in the top 32!

Melbourne had three in the top 32 as well, Dees vs Blues grand final sounds like just the thing Victorian footy needs.

And that's with a game plan that kicked to the boundary for the first quarter of the season. I'm telling you that Liam Jones is onto something!
