Toast Welcome to Carlton Liam Jones

Was reading a post on the main board about people's favourite players from each team.
Nearly every WB supporter went for Jones when it came to us.

Is there something they aren't telling us ??? And was he really rated that highly when he was there or is it more the fact they got rid of him and received a little currency?

They are laughing at us. And so they should be.

There was a point in time that Dogs supporters believed Liam was going to be a gun. I bought into the hype and then he went bang bang bang against us. We then traded for him and he's shot nothing but blanks since.

But just you wait. After all, he is the second coming.

Not wanting to intrude, but Jones has been a major disappointment all round.

He has the pace to be a lead up player, but consistently runs under the ball when leading. Some bulldog supporters came to the view that he simply will not accept contact from the closing backman.

Too often he sits back looking to take a speccy as that also avoids the contact from the defender.

His main issue is his mental application, as he will drop his bundle very quickly whenever (often) he is outpointed by his opponent.

I real hope he turns it round but I would not consider it very likely.

look, he trained the house down last year but sucked come the season... so i dont see him sucking at training as any negative sign about his footy this year... maybe he is saving BEAST mode for game day this year

Im surprised this isnt in here. Perhaps its in another thread -

Bolton has also been buoyed by the start Jones has made to his second pre-season at Carlton.

The Blues coach said the 198cm forward, who kicked just seven goals in 2015, had impressed him with his "physicality" on the training track so far this pre-season.

Bolton said for Jones to force his way back into Carlton's team he had to continue that aggressive approach and improve his endurance.
"If he keeps committing to that, I think selection and those things (will) take care of themselves," he said.

Jones' future relies on the coaching panel assigning a role to him that is within his limits, and that he can apply himself and commit fully to playing this exact role. If it's a lead up forward, then so be it. He could kick 30 goals next year if coached properly and he executes his role as well as he can.

Its a familiar story, Jones training the house down pre season. What interests me is his comments regarding Jones not worrying whether hes in or out of the side and just worrying about (dare I say) the process, as well as his endurance.

I wonder whether Bolton has gotten to the bottom of the psycology, or perhaps jist having a frank discussion before the season started, to understand why there is such disparity between his training and his on field performance. It certainly does change the way a player goes about it if hes not playing instinctually and instead worrying about what he needs to do just to stay in the team. Needless to say there were a lot of players last year doing the same. I remember Armfield running past a player with the ball in one game to follow his man when he could have tackled during the last few games under MM. The only difference is Jones didnt get another chance once MM was shown the door.

Hopefully there is still hope for Jones under Bolton to be a part of our best 22. It would certainly be a great story should he be able to turn him around.

While I don't think Jones is much chop, NRoo would have struggled to kick 7 goals playing for us last year. Would have been a lonely existance as a leadup player in our forward line

Whilst I agree that most forwards playing in our forward line, the Jones has is that he shows little or no desire and endeavour once the ball is on the ground. Some of the "efforts" I saw live last year were dreadful.

This x 1000%
-Same reason why Clayton Oliver is guaranteed to be a gun
-same as why u would take Selwood over Gibbs every day of week.
-same reason why judd could win games off his own boot when he could barely walk before the game
- same reason I was happy to lose Waite and gartlett, and henderson etc.

If someone wouldn't rather die than lose I wouldn't have them in my team

I couldn't give a crap about his potential, i would prefer we put a cross through him now and develop someone with killer competitiveness. That is all u want and need.

Unless he is puking every running session, showing he is pushing harder than anyone to fix 'one of' his big weaknesses, unless he is providing repeat efforts again and again even when his body says no...

Looks unlikely Jones will make it though you can't write it off. Concerns me is his footy smarts, doesn't read things well, endurance and his hands don't seem too great probably why he often goes the chest mark. Good power athlete and nice size and build but questions remain. Hopefully Carlton and the northern blues are kinder to forwards in 2016.
