It's interesting that Leppa said that they had an inkling that the Swans wouldn't match.

It explains the tension in our box whilst the Swans were considering matching, then the half shock/relief, then the smiles and laughter (Hine) shortly after.

We definitely got our man and it's good to see our people back their own judgment.

Every player has their unique strengths and weaknesses.

Every team has their unique list needs. And player traits they value. And internal culture. And risk profile.

The fact that they didn’t just means that the Swans thought that another player(s) (Riak Andrew) fitted better within their own list needs and/or had traits they valued more and/or would be more suited to their own culture and/or fitted their risk profile.
They probably hope Andrew turns out like his brother, but Melbourne chose not to match, which they would surely have done with Mac.

I said this in our main thread last night...

I was originally slightly concerned by the fact the Swans didn't match. But the fact was the 2 players between this pick and our next pick were 2 fairly random players, so we likely would've have taken West anyway.

That and the news articles stating that we were considering the bid well before we did it.

Has this bloke got it in him to be our Noah Balta?

Highlights look interesting. You can both see why we were keen and why Swans passed.

Looks like an elite running back flanker with a strong aerial intercept game - pretty rare player type - big ticks - but disposal looked shabby - which isn't what you want in a running back. A lot to work with and a lot to develop.

A Kmart Nick Blakey ?

It’s a tradition that will never be broken….
interested in whether many have heard the actual pre-GF injury / 'selfless stepping aside' story from the man himself .. presti, humphrey, trailer!

it certainly wasn't the portrayal that i had in my head .. worth a listen.

I wouldn't overthink the Swans matching. Cochran is an elite athlete but has scratchy kicking and can rush/panic a bit. It comes down to whether or not we can assist in the latter. It's not a first round pick, it's a late draft selection that is always hit or miss. We went for athleticism to see if we can fix the footballing side. Has terrific speed and endurance for a tall so that's the base they're looking at.

I'm not his biggest fan but admittedly most of the talls I'd have ahead of him were scooped up in the 20 picks before. But if it was out of him and Riak Andrew I'd definitely take Cochran. He's better one-on-one and those few extra centimetres (195-193). If he plays a lockdown role, the kicking and composure is not as major.

Good things often happen when Collingwood sides contain players with names we can easily associate with genitalia or the immediate surrounding area.

We might lose a couple at the end of next season but we've already found our Cox replacement.

He can clearly also run. Hell, it's in his name.

He's filled two requirements. Well done Derek!

Exactly! This is why it's so surprising that we overlooked Dickie McNutwood-Pecker from Wangaratta in the rookie draft

I wish this was true, but when we had the trifecta of Brad Dick, Shannon Cox and Tyson Goldsack recruited in 2005-2006, only one of those was a hit.

Yeah not sure why dees didnt match, they nominated him. Unless both swans and dees would rather get all of their players before matching a bid but even so, these players could cost so little.
In the case of Melbourne, because they nominated Andrew, if he'd gone undrafted, they could have added him as a Cat B rookie outside their main list, so that might have been the only circumstance in which they were willing to take him.
