Toast Welcome to Fremantle Neil Erasmus (pick 10 2021 AFL Draft)

Good post. His body hasn’t developed as fast as MJ. He therefore gets knocked around more in contests. He has been heavily tagged at WAFL but I have noticed improved composure and ball use for Peel.

I remember that horrible WAFL game in the pouring rain with strong wind. His field kicking was very good in that game. Fluffed a kick at goal but around the ground used the ball well where most others were struggling to hit a target.

He is a running machine and noticed improvement form him in that last quarter v Carlton. Playing against the likes of Bont and Cripps he will learn a lot about positioning etc.

No way we make finals so we need to play Erasmus in the seniors. Our improvement for 2024 will come within from likes of Erasmus, Johnson and Brodie.
Hopefully Chapman or Young can get midfield minutes.
But also I’d like Fyfe added to those two, with rotating HB/Mid.
Fyfe’s injuries, foot, would be stupid to play him purely in the centre.
Playing him forward IMO is not the answer.
We have versatility in the group if we want it, Neil can also kick them from 50.
Why play them in the one position? Brayshaw, MJ, can play wing.
No one has put their hand up to play medium tall, why not Erasmus?

MDB is probably a very interesting comparison.
Matt was AA Centre in the U18 & predicted to be a top 10-20 draft pick. He chose to spend a year studying & playing WAFL rather than enter the draft. During that year his severe limitations with kicking became apparent & he plummeted with recruiters all the way to the rookie draft.

Erasmus was a PSA star, still very young when drafted.

Let’s face it, if he was ripping it up on the track & at Peel he would have played a lot more games by now. I know the talk from the club has been about developing him as an inside mid but he was supposed to be a mid-forward (something which our coaches don’t appear to believe in as a concept). If he was good enough he would play in front of Banfield or Freddy.

I don’t know if he’s going to be any good but I think discussions about it are certainly valid at this point.

People have been ripping Henry to shreds practically since debut & others are happy writing off Sturt who has barely played 10 games but Erasmus is a sacred cow because?

I don't think there is anything wrong with saying that maybe he could do with a spell at Peel (I don't see the point finals are gone) but I do think its OTT to say he has no ceiling, which multiple posters have done. History as littered with blokes who show little/nothing and turn out gun.

I can guarantee there will be people will still saying Erasmus stinks, despite being 2nd best on ground for us. The worst two features of our supporter base is that we are so incredibly quick to write our own players off, and absolutely refuse to admit that they are actually good once they've been written off despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. It's horribly toxic, absolute nuffy behaviour

Erasmus is gonna be a gun. Nuff said

So did ya see enough from him today to know that he’ll be more then a “Role player”

Yes I did

I think he just needs enough games to develop

A couple of sub games and a few full games over the past few years doesn't help his development

He could be a good player but at that pick he needs to be. JVR would have been handy.

I think there's a lot to like about Erasmus.
Tough, Wins the ball and sticks Tackles.

But my God does he make some howlers with the ball in hand. People are going to be frustrated and come after him .... it just is what it is.
A Johnson type excites me a lot more, where he gets less of it, but you can see how special he'll become in time.

Maybe Erasmus is a victim of having similar weaknesses to the rest of our mids. Johnson adds something different, which I guess is more exciting than more of the same good traits?

What do you mean by this?

He was AA U18 in 2008 and nommed for that year

There are also some who claim any discussion which includes the possibility the player may not be as good as we hoped or is taking a while to show something is writing them off.

It’s possible to discuss things in a nuanced way without reducing everything to binaries (which is the toxicity that has infected public discourse around politics, climate change, gender dysphoria etc).

I agree there are posters like you have identified but there are those of us who enjoy robust & reasoned debate who object to being lumped in as haters for raising legitimate debate.

Good signs from Erasmus today. Gave me some hope for his future which is of course what I want because I want all our players to succeed.

Or alternatively the exposure to afl via the odd game and sub experience, mixed with continued development at wafl may have been exactly what he needed to develop well?

Get off your high horse, I don’t know a single poster who has written him off. Few of us (me included) have questioned what his upside may be and understandably so.

Mate you had a really lame dig at a (very) young player learning his craft, and were rightfully piled on for being a tosser. Erasmus shows you to be very wrong today - just own it
