Slider just means taken below where they were generally rated by consensus, not necessarily where a phantom draft had them going. First round sliders are almost always better because they're a product of clubs reaching for needs, or picking up unknown players they randomly rated higher than anyone else

In the second and third rounds, when most clubs have had 1 or 2 cracks at players, the sliders tend to switch from "we were lucky this guy got through" to "there's a reason this guy was still available". Our first round sliders have worked out incredibly well, but we've had some misses on the sliders in the second and third rounds for this reason

It's also why those "who won the draft" threads straight after the draft are so incredibly dumb. A club picking a slider in the third round often isn't actually a very good thing. The only clubs that "win" the draft are the ones that have multiple top 10 picks and don't reach for anyone

Not from draft day but his dad, Marcus, did quite a long interview on radio the day after.

I'm assuming you're looking for something other than this which I think would have been previously posted.

I tried to add his dad on my instagram list and his profile name is "tigerreid". Hope he changes to " dockerreid"

Pretty sure Brennan Cox and Luke Ryan were both sliders if you go back a bit. Tbh I don’t think it means anything.
ryan in particular was a massive slider, iirc he was tipped to go early 20's

Wow!
In 2019 10 out of twelve clubs would have picked Young or Jackson...
and weve ended up with both of them...
in their prime!
Lets Go Freo!
Flagmantle 25, why not!
afl website should do that every year.
rank top 5 in order for your club, anonymously of course
let the punters match the ranking to the club

Lets have this silly slider discussion out of Murphy Reid's thread.

So much for a welcome thread. Instead a bunch of old blokes arguing about other players.

You’ve just described every thread on this site

At Minute 9 mark onwards his dad telling day before the draft his management gave an indication that he is likely to end up at freo. That means they would have had some expectations and wouldn't have been a complete surprise when his name called out?

All the talk before the draft was that him and Hotton were big flight risks and Reid especially was a decent chance to slide to Dogs if he wasn’t taken before 15.

Has said all the right things so far in interviews but still when there’s smoke there’s fire.

We will have a few flight issues in the next few years as it gets tougher to break into the side. If they do break in and we're a top four side I can't see them leaving really, but if they do we will get a decent return. This kid strikes me as being as grounded and mature as any.

Whole new situation,
Its up to us now to light his fire!

The fact that so much of our core is Victorian has to give some confidence.
it’s certainly overused cliche but when it’s genuine player driven entity (aligned with management) “culture” really does count for a lot in player retention

-I mean the fact weve lost more west Australians to trade requests than vic boys wanting to go home tells me just how nuanced the issue is rather than simply where a player comes from

Culture is very real. You only have to work at more than a couple of places to figure that out. There is no reason to expect a professional sports club to be any different. I'd expect professional athletes are much more likely to have genuine care for their job that some random in a commercial or industrial workplace making it even more important than normal.

So if we have found the magical "great culture" then it is extremely valuable.

I'm not convinced that fostering a 'good' culture at a football club will necessarily attract players (it is a winning and losing business after all), but a 'bad' culture will definitely lose you players.
