Welcome to Hawthorn - Tom Mitchell - 2018 Brownlow medalist

Just re-watching the game now (1st Q just done) & Mitchell's hands are Mitchell-esque.

In fact, I'd say that Mitchell is easily as good as Mitchell of the same age, if not better Mitchell. That's not to say that Mitchell will ever eclipse Mitchell; but, at this rate, Mitchell offers a lot more than Mitchell & with the game constantly evolving, Mitchell will likely 'out-Mitchell-Mitchell' in the future.

In short: Mitchell.

Does anyone have any Mitchells?
Not enough Mitchells in the post for mine.

Ahhh, cool. Is each player scored out of 10 every game? Or do they compete for votes?

No competition - every player just gets a score out of 10. Handy little website - they do write ups each week on AFL listed players in the VFL also.

Cheers for the clarification. Essentially, it's like the brownlow, but no weighting placed on the results of the game. Interesting. Particularly that Dustin ain't in the top 10.

I don't agree that we were better without Franklin either. I think our peak game was the 2014 grand final but best form was probably during the 2012 for season. Also there was a patch in 2015 when we thrashed freo and Sydney that was pretty good too.

He called it win-win. Yes, he's a flog, but I really don't see why anyone is getting upset at him over this.

Roos article said:
The former Swans and Melbourne mentor says the trade was a sign of the maturity of both clubs and how they are driven by their needs rather than outside perception. “It’s easy to get caught up in who wins in the trade,” Roos said, “but the clubs that do it the best are the ones that worry about what’s best for their own club. Don’t worry about what you are giving up you have to worry about where your footy club is at and how you can make it better. The clubs that do it poorly are ones that think about the player you are letting go doing well.”

Pretty reasonable comment.

There were some compelling stats in 2012-2013 that stated we were a far more dangerous side without Franklin playing. Also our form in 2013 was better I feel - we won 2 more games overall in the home and away season and this was the season where Clarko abandoned the 'kick it to Franklin' playing style.

There's no way we were "better" without bud, we just became more unpredictable.
We always have a knack of playing our best footy on the last Saturday of September :thumbsu:

I continually hear how Parker is a better player than Mitchell. Never was and never will be.
Does anyone seriously believe Parker could play a FT midfield role, let alone carry a midfield for a season?

Completely agree. Pretty balanced I thought, especially the comment about not worrying about what you gave up. Have a look at the Saints board for example, 120 page thread on the draft pick they picked up from us.... an absolute celebration of nothing.

You're bang on the money, I think you could also say that Adelaide are statistically better than they were with Dangerfield even though there's been little change in their overall team makeup. If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times - an over reliance on one player does not make a team stronger, especially when that player is in the vein of Buddy, Ablett and Dangerfield. No system should have a single point of failure.

Just read on fox sports site that Tom trade was a win for Sydney according to Paul Roos #head****ed
Just when I think I can't hate that flog any more than I already do.
Yep, that's the one. Journalism at its finest

Oh come on now, that was a pretty fair article, despite taking into consideration that Roosy wears his heart on his sleeve.

1- It could be argued that it has been a win for Sydney. The loss of an extractor doesn't hurt them as much and the kid they picked up is a regular in a position they were lacking
2- Have you seen how they have been playing lately?
3- Roos did emphasise that it was a massive win for Hawthorn too

So an article doesn't shower Hawthorn with praise and simultaneously slam another club? Author must be a headf***ed flog who has always had it in for us I guess...

I hadn't read the article - I was reacting to someone's synopsis being that it was a win for Sydney. I don't usually react without doing some analysis myself - but it is Paul Roos and I have nothing but contempt for him and therefore I was willing to call him a flog again.

The Swans started with pick 17 or something like that in the draft, and we got pick 14 for Mitchell.

So we traded out

Pick 14
Pick 17
Pick 21

for

Pick 9
Pick 19
Pick 49

None of that would have been possible without securing pick 14 from you guys. So determining how good the trade is for either party, or who won it (though I think it is possible both teams may win it) will all depend on how players like Florent and Hayward develop as we would not have gotten Florent without the Hawthorn trade and who knows who we would have gotten with our original pick 17.

To be truthful, that's not a dickhead argument. He says that Sydney already had enough of players of Mitchell's style and they needed to change the composition of their midfield. And he says that Hawthorn didn't have enough, particularly with the departures of Lewis and Sammy.

It's really a non-offensive argument. He's not disparaging Mitch at all.

Doesn't mean he isn't still a flog.

I saw it as Roos getting all defensive about everyone saying what a steal Mitchell was for the Hawks, so he put out an article trying to convince the world both clubs won.

Whether both clubs actually won or not is another thing, it's just that Roos was headf**ked enough to argue the fact by writing an actual article.

I agree with this; plus it's a pretty feeble argument. Getting rid of one of the best mids in the comp for pick 14 isn't a win in my books. You've managed to trade out a genuine star for a pick yielding kids that:

a) May not become players at all, or
b) May get homesick and request a trade home.

Plus you've managed to give midfield time to players like Zak Jones who have strong ties to other clubs, driving up their value and making it less likely that you'll be able to keep them in the long run.

Odd type of winning to me.

He's still hurting that his highlight in football was two hours where the won by a kick.

Roos was a great footballer, but I've seen nothing to suggest that without CoLA, ambassadorial payments and a FIXture, he was anything more than a good average coach.
