I wouldn’t be so certain of that.
Don’t even know if Grimes’s form was all that bad anyway
Seemed like more of a change of role to more of a stopper compared to one who wins the ball back off his man and generates attack

The bnf will be telling as to if he has genuinely fallen off or it’s just fans not seeing everything he does

Interesting Bucks said that being such an insider damaged mini's chances. the opposite of what many posters thought.

the club is definitely wanting to reinvent the team on field. Good injury run and pick up the new game plan and there is potential there. Certainly i don't see any 'great' teams this year. Our 2017-2020 teams teams would have annihilated the comp this year.

We didn't hear much about Mini's plans besides that the club needed a change.

Yze's presentation and interview definetely impressed the club.

He was primarily a defensive stopper some years back anyway. It's just this year he didn't seem to be doing so good even as a pure stopper.

I'm hoping it was the extra burden of captaincy and not a decline due to age and loss of ability.

Even just the fact that he was playing with a lot less experience on the final line that he tends to patrol

Went from Taz last year along with Balta and Gibcus so essentially 3 key position backs leaning Grimes to play on the smaller/ mediums to only Balta and Young meaning depending on the oppo he’s playing on a 2nd or 3rd tall again when he’s an undersized key position defender himself all while helping to assist and help develop Young

Throw in some of the onslaughts our back 6 copped when our midfield went to sea for large periods of games it’s hard to be super critical

IMO McQualter's only real chance at landing the job was going to hinge on the on-field performance. It's a tough gig being an interim, but if he had of gotten us to finals I think that would have probably given him the edge.

Do you think a lot of his slump in form was to do with the captaincy?
To be truthful, I really am not sure. Just think he’s had a poor year by his lofty standards, could easily have been the lack of pressure from upfield exposing him and our other defenders to more pressure situations.
I still believe in him and his ability to play a strong role for us in defence, but our around the ground team defensive pressure has to lift noticeably from what we dished up this season.

pretty sure my quote was Use 3 tall KPDs Balta, Young, Gibcus or Miller.

Undersized 192 Broad used to get jobs on Hipwood, Quick Grimes on Cameron types. We have Balta, Young, Gibcus or Brown or Tresize. Peak Grimes was 21. In 22 we bring in Tarrant, Gibcus play Miller Rioli down back. Grimes had nothing to do... except be Captain.

2023 Grimes form is the Grimes form from here on
It’s hard to see grimes becoming a regular in the 22 based on how he finished the season

Certainly looked like someone who’s mind was telling him he could still do this or that but his body was saying nope cant do that

Sort of think he’ll come back from off season & pull the pin after a few training sessions realising he’s behind everyone else

Sounds like he sees issues in how we move the ball, our defensive intent/structure, and the ability of individual players to reach their potential. I'd say most of the supporters would agree with that.

The thing that impresses me the most is that the club took a good hard look and said 'yep, we need to change. Three premierships, but we've lost our way and need a total refresh.' That is mature and unlike the Richmond of 1982. if we took this attitude then the lost 3 decades wouldn't have happened.

Yze was more experienced than McQualter even though he hasn't officially coached his own team the club knew he had been in drivers seat longer than Mini coaching Melbourne the fact that Goodwin had trust in Yze speaks volumes.

Grimes captaincy certainly saves his bacon. I can't see new coach dropping the captain
.
Broad is probably dropped First. Finals teams KPD setup. pies, Moore and Howe, Murphy both sub 192.
Lions .. Andrews and Gardiner and Lester 192..
Giants, 3 KPD above 195.
Blues 3 KPD above 195.
By years end we had young , Broad and Grimes above 190
Assuming Lynch and gibcus get fit and Kosi IN,
I'm thinking Balta and Gibcus , pushing Young to depth.
Grimes stays.Broad becomes depth.
Rioli or Short.
Vlas
A couple of smaller types.. tresise Banks Brown

He was a mini Dimmer and that’s what killed him in the end. Nothing wrong with that up until 2020, but the champs have aged and new kids are needing to step up. Hence, a change for the future was needed as the old methods had run their course. We were treading on water with no more innovations and methods being adopted to take our list north.

Sorry you don’t drop easy chest marks, kick the ball or handball it out deliberately and have as many brain fades as he had.
He’s lost a yard or two and that’s when panic comes into your game. Captaincy needs to removed from him so he can be dropped and not gifted games. His closing speed was his strength and that’s why he could play on smalls and that’s no longer there. Should never of had a contract renewal and I can see him retiring midway next season leaving us one short.
He let our defence down badly this year and not the names you mentioned.

I don’t think that’s entirely correct. I personally believe it hinged on what small changes he could’ve introduced that showed a positive impact to team performance without necessarily winning. In the end what he introduced had a negative impact and resulted in blow outs. I was surprised he got so deep in the process, but I think it was more Benny’s respect towards him for all the years of service he gave to the club. Mini imho needs to go to another club and build with a new team of assistants and coach his bank of techniques , ideas , methods that will add to his armour that he built at Richmond.

He was pretty awful more than occasionally. And his form last year wasn't much better. Dropped chest marks, fumbles, falling over, giving away really dumb frees...if someone had told me 2-3 years ago that his form would get as bad as that I would've thought they should be committed.

If his form doesn't do a positive 180° early next season he could be in the twos. And surely Yze removes the captaincy from him. And Nankervis.

That wouldn't have helped, that's for sure.

It's been the most noticeable negative change in our game since the start of the '21 season. Only this year it got worse.

Seriously? Broad's season was considerably better than Grimes'. There's also no guarantee that Grimes will be captain once the season starts.
