If they match it, they can keep him as I would be unwilling to trade.

Makes me wonder, if we are interested in another port player will/could they try to tie the 2 trades together for a better outcome for their club. Given we went after another of their KPD in the last year or so they know it is a high priority for us. They will try to play hardball, understandable really given they lost Pearce, they will try to get best value from other trades to make up for that loss. Just thinking out loud about the possibilities.

Would be quite funny to see Port match the offer to force tigers to trade and then we can't find a suitable trade as we always had our heart set on getting him through FA.

Chaplin then decides its to risky to go into the draft with no guarantee he'll end up at tigerland and decides to stay forcing port to part with a 4 year offer they never wanted to offer.

found this in the from the perth sunday times:

"Chaplin, who has played 140 matches for Port since his debut in 2004, is understood to have received a four-year deal from the Tigers.

Port is even less likely to match Richmond's offer, citing the key defender's recent knee surgery as a major factor in deciding whether to offer the 26-year-old a long-term deal.

"We're well aware of his knee situation so if someone offers him a long-term contract elsewhere we'll just have to weigh it up," Rohde said.

"They (recent injuries) are obviously the things you have to consider when you do long-term contracts."

Haven't read the past couple of pages, but I will say this.

I expected every single FA agreement to take close to the full three days before being signed off. I was VERY surprised St Kilda went so early with BG.

My thoughts are that some weird things could happen in the 72 hour timeframe between the initial FA intention being lodged and being agreed to or otherwise by the club who the player is leaving. For example, lets say out of nowhere on the second day, Hawthorn contacted Port to say they'd pay an early second round draft pick to get Chaplin. It would then be Port's duty to try and convince Chaplin to talk to the Hawks.

The moment one of our players asks for a move via FA, I hope we get everything we can out of the situation.

I have a gut feeling that nothing will be finalised in the next few hours and the saga with Chappy will spill into next week or beyond.
Unfortunately, kaka happens!

For that to happen, Port will have to agree to match our offer for Chaplin. Something has to happen before 4.30pm tonight, one way or the other.
Admittedly, if they do match our offer, then yes, it will spill in to trade period, and could even take 2-3 weeks to get a deal done.

Anyone know what happens if Port fail to table a formal response?

Would think that Port will wait the whole 72 hours as entitled, and then let him go. They really don't gain much from a player who wants to leave by matching when Chaplin + Pearce equals a far better compensation pick than Pearce on his own.

But it is Peter Rohde we are talking about here.

Based on the latest RFC twit it sounds like the club has put there final offer in and is just waiting on a decision either way

Wow, they're really leaving this one down to the wire. Do they have internets in South Australia? Is anyone in the office at Port or have they called it in already?
Out to lunch
