Autopsy Well, that happened vs Doggies

1000%.

I don't think Cunnington is still rated highly enough.

Except for pace he was fantastic at all facets of the game. Agree we haven't replaced him.

By rights, he still should be playing and just preparing to hand over the baton. Literally hand it over. Across a few player’s heads if they dished that shit up.

Fai
If they were putting in the required effort he wouldn't have baked them at quarter time.

Within the first minute of the game we saw:

• a ball returned poorly to a free kick and absolutely no attempt to get the ball to Logue quickly so the Bulldogs didn't have a chance to set up
• Paul Curtis pull out of a chase on our goal line
• Jack Darling opt to stand 5m in front of the Bulldogs player instead of pressing and pressuring him (he may have been expecting Curtis to not pull out of his chase)

That Bulldogs player on our own goal line then hit a player of theirs, standing all on his own, dead set middle of the corridor on our 50 arc, the most dangerous score launch position on the ground.

I said it at the time that I worried the energy levels weren't there and then they proceeded to do similar stuff until the quarter time break.

He's a very good coach but he's not immune to his side's doing this stuff, which is why he gives a spray when needed.
Fair enough, T. I suppose my main point is that Clarko is right on top of this stuff. Obviously, if things don’t improve, the focus has to shift to him. I’m still at the stage of backing him in. Otherwise, it’s going to be similar to the Demons’ drawn out rebuild. Roos to Goodwin.

Let's not forget that Cunnington was a HUGE factor in the good run we had in the second half of 2021. There was a time when we couldn't win a game without Ben, and he's one player who we haven't really replaced. At his best he was probably the best player we've had over the last 10-15 years.

Cunnington at his best would have won us extra 3-4 games last season and could have dragged us over the line against the Dogs last week.
Yep, the only guy seriously pushing Harvey for our best player in the last 25 years imo.

Never underrated by opposition midfielders.

Imagine having the 25yo version on field around the likes of Sheezel, GW, Kerch and FOS.

Knew a bloke who played on him and he always said that Cunnington just couldn't be moved. Like you jostle at a stoppage he's just, there, not budging, and not even trying to hold you out. May as well be jostling a tree trunk.

After rewatching can confirm we’re still just flipping lazy and refuse to run.

Pressure is poor and no where near where it needs to be consistently.
5 years of shitness, an appalling end to 2024 and they come out Round 1 with question marks over application. How does this happen?

Loved Emma Quayle's description when we drafted him - that for the next 10 years we'll have him and Jack Ziebell standing in the middle with arms crossed saying "you're not getting past us".

At some point, the honourable losses have to be turned into wins. I think the disappointment at this end was the predictability of it all - the sense that the best was better than what the Dogs could do, but the fade-outs in-game are disheartening.

There seems to be genuine issues of midfield depth. Across the weekend, only the super-settled Brisbane team have had fewer players at CBAs.

(please don't hate me, but in the wake of my grandmother's death [former volunteer at the club] I've taken out a membership and follow the Roos as closely as I do the Cats, albeit with less subjectivity).
We've literally had maximum 5 "honourable losses" in the last 12 months. You realise that right?

MOST we lose by 40points and half of those are by 10 goals+.

We need to have way way more honourable losses if you're going to use that language.

Anyone got the distanced covered by our midfield group?
I'd be interested to see how LDU and Powell stack up against a Finn Callaghan. I think it'd be stark the work rate.

If Jackson Archer had received the free kick instead of being reported North Melbourne probably would have won the game
Knowing our luck the door would have hit Comden in the head and he would be out for 2 weeks with concussion

Followed by showing hawthorn not kicking long to the outnumber - the complete opposite of what we do
The Bombers v Hawks vision also showed that if we did put an extra behind the ball and not at the stoppage, then smart teams can exploit it by finding the free extra number across the ground to move the ball down the ground.
Bombers extra down back was ineffectual because Hawks didn't blaze it long.
So positives and negatives to either putting the spare down back or the extra at the stoppage.

Yep, it's always a pros and cons choice. Although notably the Hawks didn't use the spare at the stoppage either, but on the spread as almost a third wing. It annoys me how innovative they are.

Personally though I hate seeing sides where clearance dominance is their strength employing an extra at the stoppage. Doubly so when our clearance game seems to be the dump kick by the sweeper. If your midfield is so talented, back them in to win it.

I think the only reason we do it is so we can play all our mids. Which IMO is not a reason to do it.

You’ll find the answer in the excuses thread or you can live in the reality of us being complete shit
