no, your club had the AFL and Mirvac, renovate and give you AFL park as well as a substantial amount of money from the sale of waverley park

Bahhh wrong answer.....cool story though.

No hand outs from the AFL, they broke our 40 year lease with VFL park. We were compensated accordingly.

As for our training base. The sale of Waverley park
Hawthorn and Mirvac struck a deal......The stand and the players race was heritage listed.

Under the terms of the deal, the oval and immediate surrounds were to remain for sporting purposes. Mirvac needed a club to occupy the oval. The Hawks, under the board of president Dicker, struck a deal that could be football's answer to Kerry Packer selling Channel Nine to Alan Bond – ie, it happens only once in a lifetime.

Hawthorn paid $1 and, in return, received the freehold on the entire oval and a portion of what is now the administrative buildings. Thus, the club gained millions of dollars of real estate – a freehold that gave the club serious assets on the balance sheet, a buffer for bad times and no rental costs – for nothing. The Hawks also bought the gymnasium at Waverley and receive a tidy return of about 8 per cent a year.

Hawthorn was also the face of Mirvac for a number of years as part of the deal.

erh no & keep convincing yourself.
your deal like every other club received a pay out from the sail of Waverley through distribution like every other team.
mirvac was the contractor who won the rights to redevelop the VFL site. it was the AFL who stepped in & stated that the AFL needed to maintain a presence in that area. from then on mirvac became a sponsor of whorethorn & the AFl maintained VFL oval!

it was nothing like a packer allan bond take over!

then in relatively the same time Docklands was being developed & the AFL needed tenants to take over it & pay it off. in the mean time Ian dickhead & Jeff kennett arranged for whoretorn to play games in tassie, as the hawks had no money at the time & didn't want to contribute in the AFL paying off docklands!

Bahh wrong answer....it was the state government who heritage listed the stand and the players race, it was the government who wanted to maintain a football presence, not the AFL. Hawthorn negotiated ...the rest is history, A deal of a life time. Whilst Mirvac had sponsorship.

Bahhh wrong answer again.

When we were negotiating with them (Docklands), we could only get about 12,000 seats at normal costs, whereas we could get 35,000 at the MCG," he said.

"It meant we could transfer those people who went from Waverley at the basic entrance price to the MCG for the same deal, and give them a smooth and cost-effective transition.

"I'm sure that we would not have got the development (in crowd support and members) if we had gone to Docklands."

It was all about the members and for it to be cost effective for them.

I'm not for Pokies, but I am very much against blaming inanimate objects for people's individual failings

I'd respond to this further but let's not turn it into a metaphysics thread.

Simply put - given pokies are psychologically designed to have an addicting nature I think it's fair to say not all is to blame on the people that use them. It's an addiction like any other - there becomes a point where it's more than a matter of 'willpower' to break the cycle. And yet the use of them is barely regulated.

Anyway - not really the time or place for such a discussion.

Suffice to say given the connection between pokies and ruined lives, I'd feel pretty uncomfortable if North were still profiting off them, and that's the honest truth. I didn't like it when we were, not one bit, and I was overjoyed to find out we had stopped. To openly celebrate how much revenue you're making off them... I find that pretty insensitive. Which is about what I expect from Bosk.

So, gambling should be taken away from everyone, because some people abuse the privilege?

I just don't believe in blaming the device

No, it should just be regulated better. And pokies, not gambling. And I agree, but I think you have to acknowledge the device plays a role. As I said, not exactly the right place or time for such a debate... can agree to disagree here.

After my mother retired, she poured $300k through the things, and lost everything

The device itself holds no mystery or power, unless you're unable to see the consequences of your actions

Yes to better regulation to protect people from themselves, no to "victims" being unable to make an adult assessment of what they are about to do before they reach a point of no return

You are not correct, the stand is heritage listed and the oval cannot be used for any other purpose so there is no natural buyer, the assets resale value is virtually zero because of the restrictions upon it.

Barely regulated??? You are kidding! No advertising allowed, ATM's not allowed on premises, staff have to be trained re problem gamblers, capped areas, limited number of machines available and so it goes on.

Now lets look at inter-net betting, ads all the time, credit offered, no monitoring by regulators. Pokies are static to in decline, its internet based betting that is capturing the new markets and will be the major problem going forward.

You started out by saying he wasnt correct, then said stuff that doesn't seem to contradict anything he said...

How come?

every club takes risks & invests in other business ventures that makes clubs money. pokes is hardly a risky investment! ffs pokes and gaming is what keeps the NRL in business.
take that & having jeff arrange Eddie type deals with government under the table, to the tasmanian sponsorship & the selling of home games.
along with that, con the state of tasmania, that the hawks ars setting up base there, is a pissweak attempt to score extra memberships,

really whorethorn have had a really big helping hand.
U mad or Jelly. I really can't tell. Or as the little Mexican girl says......

Thoughts on ice?

Why? Is that something that a responsible person can "enjoy" without damaging themselves or their family/community?

Not sure it even warrants a serious reply, but if you don't think I should be able to have a punt now and again, because Ice is addictive... well.. yeah
