Data from footywire. To check the draft order see the thread here.

Footywire says: "While we make every effort to keep up to date with player contracts, it is likely that our data may at times be out of date, incomplete or inaccurate. If you find any player contracts that need updating, please let us know using our brand new contract submission form."

Tom Barrass is contracted until 2027.
So with 3 full years remaining, the contract takes him through to 31yo.
With the Eagles in full rebuild, would Barrass consider a trade to a club in a premiership window and would the Eagles be open to trade to assist their rebuild.
The Blues could really use Barrass to partner Weitering with McGovern as the third allowing Kemp to be redeployed elsewhere further afield …

One aspect of all this is

If you are Eagles what are you going to do

Trade Barass for a mid teens pick OR, ask AFL for 2 priority picks instead. People seem to think Eagles should trade away experienced players to get assets the AFL will simply give us for free

I think if Eagles end up with pick 3 they should look at the suns picks 6 11 20. Say 3, 59, F3 for 6 11 20.

Trade that pick 20 for Baker and get whatever they can for Barrass from Hawks. Likely first round and a future pick.

Eagles have then 6, 9, 11 to get 3 draftees in the first round. Keeping 3 will not be wise to keep when you can potentially get two top 10 draftees.

Ignore this if Eagles end up in 17th place though because pick 2 is 0'Sullivan.

The AFL should tell West Coast to forget about a priority pick when they've had a Premiership in the past decade.

It probably wouldn't help them.

The AFL isn't going to start handing out priority picks to clubs after 60 bad games and one spoon.
I think they will if we ask cos AFL wont want to see us trade away too many experienced players and subsequently get worse.

Any help would be similar to what North got to bring in Logue/Tucker. Picks that must be traded. We then trade for Liam Baker with these picks

I don't think they'll see it as an issue. You're not bleeding members

We are bleeding attendance and ratings though.... which matters just as much.

You think Channel 7/Foxtel would be thrilled with one of the most supported clubs having games over at half time for example?
You're not borderline unviable like North or the Suns. You win a premiership like 5 years ago and last I heard you still had a waiting list for memberships.

Like Geelong, the afl will not give you a priority pick, probably ever

It depends who you believe makes the decisions

I think sponsors and those piling money into the game make the decisioms. Dont like Lauren Kane is anything but a messenger service to them

Heard Melbourne have some interest in Jack Darling
So they would give up a 4th round pick currently 49 so wouldn't cost much

Agreed they would be less likely. No chance of PP this year but good luck trying to work out what the AFL would do. At best a couple extra rookie spots, would help with the WAFL competition rules and make the Eagles have a more competitive side for the kids to develop.

Issue is everyone makes a song and dance about PP but lots of teams have had a legs up with Academy, NGA and Father son and until recently been let go through to the keeper. Also allowed teams to double dip into first round and sometimes tripe dip.
Imo Can’t argue against PP while these other loopholes are in the draft system imo.

Yeah but priority picks are a band aid that just forces more band aids later. They need to fix the system.

I don't think you need an argument against priority picks, you need a argument for them and I don't see one here

PP is probably a discussion for next year if its another 5 win or below year. Two extra wins and a near 20% increase in percentage probably rules it out here though the club should still ask behind the scenes.

Haha. What? Draft pick in the top 20s or multiple is an asset more than a band aid. It’s to bridge the gap from being down the bottom to being competitive again for finals. If it’s to use or trade for established players.

Clubs and media do argue against them all the time but happy (besides the clubs who haven’t been lucky) for sperm lotto or NGA players go top 20 picks and then use that pick the next year so you have 3 first round picks.

Father son have helped teams for years win flags and most were pretty much free hits.

If the Roos got Blakey as Father Son and Thomas didn’t have his off field stuff I highly doubt they are were they are and get multiple PP. They are the free hits some clubs have had compared to others.

They have finally worked it out and adjusting the points but it will take a while to balance out.

If you have a the most compromised draft in any professional league in the world. There should be no issue for PP to help balance out the luck.

Your answer to an unbalanced system is to randomly start throwing extra weights into it.

That's not fixing it

It wouldn’t be random or luck like FS ect. Well yeah if you throw the weight on the right area it balances out? ⚖️ never used scales?

It’s not fixing it long term but would help even it out while the draft is so compromised. You can’t fully fix it while you have FS, NGA and academy’s, they are never going to get rid of it because the tears would flow.

It's not a set of scales though. If you put weights on a scale but you can't actually measure what those weights are and what level the scales are at currently then you're just adding noise to noise. You might have added nothing, you might have added too much.

It's entirely the wrong mechanism and honestly has no place in competitive sport

Yeah agreed FS, Academies and NGAs should not be in an elite league.

Thats exactly what should be done if they arent going to remove some of the rubbish.
No point going halfway and compromising it for the northern clubs and whichever club gets a lucky f/s, at least do the teams that have been shit for a few years too
