West Coast Eagles Assistant Coaches

You don't think he's been watching a bit of footy over the past few years?? Maybe he has some fresh ideas. I'm not going to get my knickers in a knot so quick.
Why not? Everyone else is. :D

People have to remember that not many assistants were out of contract at this time of year and we had our hands tied as we were going after 2 people to be head coach who happened to be in the GF.

Pretty sure Woosha had a very young set of assistants to work with when he stepped in to be head coach. Think they were Mckenna and Suma but not sure of the other does anyone know?

Pyke was still a part time assistant with Claremont a for a few years after he left the Crows and he was tipped to be going for the Claremont job after Webb left to go to Freo.

I say we go after Dean Laidley to offer some experience and guidance...Simpson was his captain so i would say thye would have a pretty good working chemistry.

I doubt that Pyke who hasnt coached at AFL level for 7 years can provide the required experience required by a rookie coach. Hopefully Laidley is picked up as the Senior Assistant for Simpson.

Welcome back to the club Pykey. From the article I've read he will be a specialised stoppages coach coach as well which is fantastic. We need a specialist stoppages coach i think

Well im absolutely shocked.

Hiring a businessman thats been out of the game for 7 years going into next season, to be in charge of strategy, stoppages and structures is absolutely bewildering.

Speaks volumes of the hole we are in I believe. Big job ahead of Simpson I feel.

Pyke..hmm..i liked him as a player,he seemed calm and measured in the heat of battle..doesnt seem to have had much or prolonged coaching experience or recent footy experience, but you would hope he has something going for him,i mean they didnt just throw a dart at a board and say "oh look it stuck on don pyke,he's our man!?"
i'm not keen on voss..he was sacked, i could be wrong, but doesnt that tell you something? he needs to learn more craft as an assistant coach, but not with us..although we nearly had him before..i guess he's learnt some stuff, with experience to be an assistant coach,ok i'm confused..however Dean Laidley would be a good score, except it would really look like a north melb.takeover, which is pretty ironic given this sites passion for sending up the amazing Scott brother..

I think the Pyke move is a good one. For some weird reason the modern theory in football is only people recently in the game have something to offer. This is crazy. The game hasn't changed that much that you can rule these guys out of the equation just because they have been out of the system. Especially in a game where it has been proven day in day out that a guy with a football IQ will get the ball and beat the pure athlete most times.

Pike's appointment looks like a club-friendly, well-credentialed person who is prepared to step in for a year or two to fill a gap, until a longer-term replacement can be found. Good on him if he's been willing to that.
Yeap tend to agree on this one, 2 years in the coaches box in total. Best candidate at this time Hhhhmmm...

Laidely was also sacked dude?

Wouldnt read into our somewhat low profile signings as assistants. We had some 'big' names prior who did stuff all. If the players want to commit and improve they will. Lets hope Simpson can get through to them. We are too proud of a club to be a rabble.

Not sure why everyone is so keen on Laidley, wasn't one of his big issues player relations?

He had a bit of a my way or the highway attitude I believe, but that was as the senior coach. His coaching record is not that bad to be honest. Not great either though. But remember in his time at North they had nothing in far as resources/money.

He is highly regarded though by many as a great coach on game day. With what is available then I guess we have to talk to him.
I think our list to be honest needs a bit of a hard nose approach. Some of them just might step up instead of the cruise many of them have been on for the last couple of years.

Senior assistant is a very important job for us next year, new novice coach will need some help. Not sure who the right man is?

I am worried though, I heard one of the issues at the end was a rapid deterioration between certain player/coach relationships at the club, due in part to his negative approach.

I could be wrong mind you, but if not I thought football was moving away from this kind of thing.

Rapped to have Pikey back with us - he was reputedly one of the main reasons Adelaide were doing so well when he was there. An astute man who will fit in well with our young coaching team. So glad we didn't go for any of the dead wood about the place like Vossy and Harvey and co. Everyone was screaming out for a fresh start and by george, we've got it. Excited already by the promise of 2014.

Omg I'm so happy to have pike
So happy that I grab onto the mic
And lay some beats
For the treats
That we promise him
As he meets
and he greets
In his new domicile

We are the eagles
Not the beagles
And we're number1
We got the pike
What a psych
Now who's the dumber 1

The other teams better know who not to muck with
Rippin it up with the stuff those tricky skunks can't **** with

Strategy & Innovation coach!!!!!......WTF does that mean, Hes been out of the AFL circle for 5 years which is far too long to be out of the game ......I know this may sound a tad harsh but I think its a stupid appointment , a touch of desperation to just fill the role , hes not proven or tried but lets just put someone in there ..........God I wonder who's making these calls.
I worry for your blood pressure at times Luc
