I actually wanna see Culley play a bit of KPF for the Beagles. He’s a couple cm’s shorter than Oscar Allen and he looks just as big physically. Kids got a decent leap and mark and is quite strong.

Brockmans been a flop so far.

What do you expect a small forward to add in a team getting flogged each week?

He is a long term player who will peak when the ball starts moving forward in something close to a semi professional manner.

If this is us operating with a competitive advantage I'd hate to see how bad we are with a competitive disadvantage

It’s a competitive disadvantage compared to other teams in AFL.

If we go back to dispersing players across the competition we don’t get a say on what position they play, and they don’t get to play with each other in a system that is meant to replicate the AFL system.

Clearly WAFL isn’t working, but it’s the recruiting rules around the team and our injuries.

We will have a stand alone team in 2025. It’s a choice between the WAFL and the VFL.

Port has applied to join the VFL in 2025

Would not be surprised to see the Crows and Eagles join soon as well.

Freo may try to stay in the WAFL for longer due to their relationship with Peel. It is worth noting that Peel have expressed an interest in going back to being independent of Freo again at some point in the future already.

The national reserves comp is inevitable.

There's only 3 other clubs that could use that system and Freo have the alignment (the ideal model) and the 2 SA clubs are looking at leaving their current setup

Any other club could use it if they wanted. A Vic club could elect to distribute their players around the standalone VFL sides, for example.

They choose not to. Some have entered into alignments with the likes of Box Hill and Sandringham, others have spent time and effort into establishing their own sides like we have (they’ve probably expended a lot more time and effort, I’d guess).

And I don’t think either SA club is looking at going back to the old model of spreading their players around Norwood/Sturt/Glenelg etc. They’re discussing putting their standalone team in the VFL instead of the SANFL.

Disingenuous

The VFL is essentially the AFL reserves (minus 4 teams). Because of this they obviously have much better and equal top up rules for teams that need them, more than the WAFL is ever going to allow us...it just isn't going to happen

We can waste more years fooling ourselves about it or we make change. Joining the VFL is looking like the way to go now (failing an alignment)

Anything is better than what we have now. Yes, even spreading the players amongst the wafl clubs would be much better.

The top up rules as they are are fine. We’ve got two guys with significant AFL experience (Nelson and Ruscoe), one other guy who’s been on an AFL list (Gillbee) and a bunch of players who are now experienced WAFL players (Hansen, Mercer, Eastough, Creasey, McCarthy who played on Saturday, Burke, Nitschke, Henderson who didn’t).

The problem is squarely with us and our inability to develop players or a workable gameplan. We need to fix that, not abrogate the responsibility to develop our own youngsters to other WAFL clubs.

It’s already in the works.

We need to tell the WAFL by 1 May if we are continuing in the WAFL or joining the VFL.

The "experienced WAFL players" you mentioned are still barely WAFL quality, as harsh as that is. Filling out a side of kids with guys barely at the league standard is a sure-fire recipe for the disaster it's been.

The bolded couldnt be more spot on, and applies to the AFL side aswell. Which is probably why I'd be on board farming them out tbh. It's better than what they're getting now, anything is

If WCE join the VFL how will that work logistically?

Fly the VFL team to Melb every week?

Port 2nds v WCE 2nds at Alberton?

Some of the non-aligned teams in the VFL might have to be moved to the VFA.

Then just marry the fixture up to the senior schedule.

The seconds play either as a curtain raiser or after if it's an early game.

Keep it simple

There would be very few curtain raisers. The grounds don’t want the extra use. They will be played at other grounds.

I dunno.

So basically it'll be AFL reserves but VFL name

If it happens it will be nothing like a traditional league and reserves set up as it was in the past.
It will be your senior team playing for everything and then at another ground your left overs having a hitout against an opponent also having a hitout. Winning the reserves will not be important as it was 40 years ago.
It will be a colts comp level comp. They will call it second tier but it will be far from it.

The VFL sides seem to take it pretty seriously?

It is pretty common knowledge that the SANFL and WAFL are the best leagues outside the AFL. Victoria withdrew from State football because they could no longer beat either the WA or SA state leagues.
Why would we leave the highest tier to play in a lower level?

The VFL is playing the SANFL in a rep game next week?
