If you look at, say, the coaching panel at Subiaco;

There's a senior coach, plus 6 assistants. Plus a whole slew of support staff. Granted, I imagine that many of them are part time. But that's a heck of a lot more resources than we seem to be putting in. Particularly when you consider that resources like Hurn, Brennan and Trewhella are presumably spread across the AFL and WAFL teams.

IMHO, if we want to run a stand-alone side, we need to treat it like a real club. Resource it accordingly, help it to grow it's own identity and support all the players... not just the AFL-listed ones.
Swan Districts shared a post today where they said they have over 200 volunteers across footballing and off-field roles. That's not even counting paid positions. You'll even find that a lot of assistant coaches across the teams will be unpaid roles.

Eagles could do this but without the volunteer aspect. Whats the point of making profit as a footballing club. Not like we have shareholders to impress... Just put the money back into the club. We are at a stage in our existence were profit should be 0 dollars. Every resource available needs to be spent on getting us back to the top. When we are back on the top is when they can worry about our profit

Until then you are just not putting in your 100% effort

our profit margins at the moment could not support increasing the headcount by 200

keep in mind that 'volunteering' for a local footy club can be as simple as rocking up for 2 hours and handing out sausage rolls

Part time people plus current staff and it’s easy to do .

Been to plenty of WAFL games. We are about 20 short only . 20 part timers is a pittance

In all seriousness. Whats the worst result in us breaching the WAFL salary cap? They fine us a seasons worth of winning games. I'd rather breach the cap if it brings in guys that are high enough quality to help develop the juniors.

The fine comes off of the clubs profits for the year which lowers the financial distribution to the WAFC. So it would come close to cancelling itself out.

I played League many moons ago and even I don't give a **** about the WAFL anymore. The clubs with all their volunteers and dedicated supporters, great people but if something helps the Eagles and is a big FU to the WAFC then I couldn't care less.

If we did it deliberately and compromised the competition in the process, I imagine they'd kick us out and we'd be scrambling to sort out a new arrangement. And you can guarantee no other WAFL clubs would be willing to help us out, so it would be the VFL, I guess. Thought it would be fairly obvious that cheating the WAFL is not a sound strategy.

The important bit from the article.

"Edwards-Baldwin and Claremont midfielder Max Mumme have been cleared to the club this off-season.

Edwards-Baldwin, 25, played 25 games and kicked 30 goals for the Lions between 2018 and 2020 including kicking a goal in the 2019 premiership win over South Fremantle at Optus Stadium.

The 185cm forward then crossed to Sullivan Logistics Stadium co-tenants East Perth where he played 21 games and booted 17 between 2021 and 2022.

Edwards-Baldwin then played for Kingsway in the Perth Football League in 2023 before helping Kalannie win the Central Wheatbelt Football League premiership this year.

Mumme, 21, has transferred from Claremont where he played two league games in 2023 and 37 reserves matches."

Doesn’t look like any ex afl players are coming. Witherden probably one of the last hopes maybe with the player who doesn’t get the afl list spot out of Burgiel or Brock.

Gilbee looks like he will suit up for West Perth. It is hard to build a decent list when the Beagles can't retain anybody or hardly recruit anybody. The tools are there to do so but does anybody at the club really care.

Gilbee didn’t set the world alight last year. Is he any better than an amo? Maybe we’re paying him to play for West Perth…left field solution that keeps Harley happy while Gilbee doesn’t count towards our salary cap 🤪

From the very start the WAFL clubs have never wanted this. They want the money but not the tenth team. The ultimate NIMBY’s

The way I see it, is that there are three viable options for the club to work.

1. Introduce a new WAFL club ie Bunbury that is aligned with WCE (previously proposed by Duff). They’d have to redraw country zones, which could probably help even out the WAFL but I can’t see WAFL clubs being happy about this.

2. AFL list sizes are increased. Not happening

3. Full (all players) or half (non-WA and Peel) Alignment with Perth.

The WAFL clubs excauses have to stop, nothing stands in the way of the Eagles doing well in the WAFL now. It’s up to the Eagles, recruit away. Concessions are virtually all gone. What’s the problem now?

One problem, as you have noted before, is we can't attract players because our primary focus isn't winning the comp, so who would want to play for us. Another is we don't have a reserves and colts comp (where some of our players should be playing) and, understandably, the WAFL clubs would be reluctant to allow us to have that (even if we wanted it - which I am not sure we do) as it would require redrawing/diluting their zones.

That's why I see the only viable option as aligning with a WAFL club (but no club wants that) or farming our players out again. We can't have development completely dependent on the health and strength of our list. A large injury list and no young players develop or a cyclical downturn and we are unable to develop what little talent we have.

Obviously the best option would be our own, stand alone, fully functioning WAFL team with a reserves and colts (whether through alignment or otherwise), but that isn't what we have and seems unlikely in the near future.

The Eagles haven't taken the WAFL team seriously enough, for sure. But I am not sure, even if they do, it can work consistently because of the above.

The club is an AFL club, their reserves play in the WAFL. It’s not a WAFL club. No scenario ever will see us having a league, Reserves Colts in the WAFL.
Alignments are the best thing for the Eagles but in the end we didn’t want them either, or ended up with a bad relationship with the WAFL club.
One would think we have had extensive conversations with Perth about aligning and that seems a no go for now. Maybe there is a way to make this happen over the next couple years?
I still think if we have a sound injury list at AFL level then our WAFL side will be very competitive.
Can we stay fit at AFL level? That’s the big question and one we have failed with for years now.

I think if we stay fit at AFL level and (if) start to win and (if) be competitive at WAFL level the. Recruiting will start to take care of itself.
All stems from the top how the Beagles go.
You’re possibly right but there’s a few ‘ifs’ there that shouldn’t be the basis for a stable AFL reserves team.

And I know SFA about the situation but again I don’t think it is a winner to have players farmed out. It can hinder development with the senior team having no say over positions for players.

It seems alignment is the best option but I realise Perth have an anti Eagles constituent. But how many members do they have? Do members immediately get voting rights? Get my drift?

From Wiki:
There were unsuccessful plans by the WAFL to relocate the Demons to the Perth Hills to capture expanding outer suburbs as West Perth did by moving to Joondalup, but in spite of the trouble many players had travelling to Lathlain, the Perth board voted by 115 to 83 to remain there on 11 July 1995.

So 198 members decided the fate of the club then.
How many members now? And more importantly how many members to change the constitution?
