Slide from 42 to 54 and get a backup ruck. I don't hate it but only time will tell if this is a good trade or not.
Picks in the 40s and on are a bit of a lottery anyway. Sliding with a pick that late for a known quantity is ok imop.

Also, she struggled for games in teams with better ruck options than us.

Am fine with the trade on its own merits, a ruck option is valuable especially if Lakfer needs a change and so the following might not be worth applying to this trade itself/may be a bit of bedwetting about rumours of us being happy to trade higher picks:

Am really hoping we stick to the Drennan approach to immediate improvement as much as possible. It's a given that we need some more experienced strength in multiple positions to get more of a winning culture/let players develop properly around them. But equally it's also the case that if we're comparing current league B graders to the B grade range of upcoming drafts, that range of talent will be exploding more and more and dwarf those who are on lists currently.

Given this if we identify positions of immediate need I'd be happier getting players like Drennan who due to age we pay a lot less for but could still provide equal output to a 24-25 year old for a couple years, then can comfortably be moved on as players develop underneath them/we continually need to keep opening up list spots.

With how much stronger the drafts are going to get I sort of see any B graders we bring in, whether in their mid 20s or early 30s giving similarly 2-3 years of good value regardless. So yeah would hope that (unless it's a genuine A grader who can also be part of our side for ages like a Rowbottom) we don't get too greedy with the AFLW equivalents of Liam Baker. Let the drafts come to us, develop in waves underneath our existing list and recruit players like Drennan who would achieve current needs but come cheaper for age reasons/cost nothing like Hosking.

Are Melbourne likely to take Zip with pick 2 now?
Almost certainly. A struggling team might have been reluctant to pick her ahead of Rasheed or O'Hehir because a struggling team's ball movement is under so much pressure, and a small, first year midfielder might take a few years to get going, while Rasheed or O'Hehir would deliver something immediately.

But Melbourne won't have that problem, their ball movement is elite, Zippy wouldn't be under anywhere near as much pressure in her first year or two. Plus Melbourne are losing Lilly Mithen in the trade, so will need another mid to replace her. Mithen for Zippy is like trading in your hatchback for a Ferrari.

Sooo some chance Zippy slides to us 👀

But if Zippy and O'Hehir go before our pick, who are people hoping for?

Indi Rasheed.

But I really want Molly to be there for us, with our pick. 🤞

That said I am expecting Centra, harris, Zippy, Molly and Rasheed to all be off the board by the time we get to pick.

Leaving us to choose between Painter and Howley as mids, or are we tempted to go a tad early and take the best KPF in the draft Emma McDonald ??????

Strong inside mid would really complement the current burst out of stoppage we have from Lewis and Roberts

Then that would probably be Painter - she is very strong, contested and combative but she doesn’t have pace - that’s her downside.
Howley has better skills but is no where near as strong.

Both players are very good Painter more of a Bull and I think I would have a preference for Howley as she is a balanced mid and I see a higher ceiling for her and she does find the ball a lot too, he run and carry is also impressive.

My predictions (assuming the top six order doesn't change anymore);

Collingwood; Centra
Melbourne; Fish
GWS; Rasheed
Sydney; O'Hehir
Carlton; McDonald (they can take McKay with a later pick with father-daughter, makes sense they'd grab a forward here)

And Harris will of course be taken by Gold Coast with a later pick, so she's off the board too.

We're not after rucks because we've already taken Liz McGrath, all the best available players here would be mids.

I think it would be between Painter and Howley. I think Howley's better, but she's an outside mid, and we've already got a lot of those. Painter's an inside beast, is good outside too, very strong, takes big marks, kicks a long way. Doesn't have Howley's run or disposal accuracy, but she's close.

My guess is we'll get Painter, and I'd be happy with that.

And then a forward with the second pick. Should get a good one, too, there'll be plenty left.

It’s a really close call between Painter and Howley - I do get you comments on Painter and she is the sort of player we don’t have, I was hoping Kavanagh would serve that role last year but sadly she popped her knee.

Very much think that Painter makes life for Ella, Bella, Rowley a heck of a lot easier.

And going forward I would like to see Rentsch in that midfield mix as well.

Painter would be a really solid get.

Yeah, if Kavanagh can do the inside job, that's another option... but we're still overloaded with lean outside runners. I prefer Howley as a player, but from a team balance point of view, Painter probably makes more sense. Her kicking accuracy's not amazing, but her in-close handballs are elite, she loves the hard stuff, and can accumulate huge disposal numbers.

And then with the second pick, assuming it stays at 24, we have to take a forward. Rookie Me have Grace Belloni at 17, Georgie Brisbane at 19, and Claire Mahony at 22 -- there's a chance one will slip to 24, and all would have been easy top 10 picks a few years ago.

If Belloni somehow slipped to 24, that would be a dream - she's a rocket, 174cm and solid, can play forward or mid but more a natural forward, fast and strong with great hands. She wasn't so highly rated until last year, so there's a chance she might slip under enough people's radars that she's still available at 24.

Otherwise there's Claudia Wright, who Rookie Me have at pick 29 -- she missed her whole last year with injury, and I reckon would have been top 15 if she were fit. I'd rather Belloni, but would be very happy with her. She's 172cm and could just as easily play wing or halfback, super fast and versatile.

Freo did very well to get Bella Smith from Sydney for a third round pick # 49.

She is only 23 and 181cm KPP, with a long left peg on her and can play either end.

That’s a good piece of trading by the Violet Crumbles.

I think Collingwood did well to get Mattea Breed and 26 for 22&28
Steal. Add her and Centra to Davey, Bonnici and Rowe, and the Pies midfield will be a little scary.

We're entering a period of the AFLW where the fortunes of clubs could turn around very rapidly, given the new talent flooding in.

Of course, rethinking this, it's possible GWS will prefer Painter to Rasheed. They need an elite player who can kick goals, pure forward or not -- Rasheed's one, but Painter's 174cm, takes big grabs and is a big kick.

First year mids usually get played forward or back anyway, but Painter could also handle the middle in her first few years more than Rasheed could, Rasheed being skinny and Painter being a tank. So Painter would give them arguably more versatility in her first few years, playing middle and forward, while Rasheed would mostly be forward until she bulked up a bit. And Alyce Parker could certainly use the help, having carried that team on her own for years now.

I reckon Sydney would then take Rasheed instead of O'Hehir, because goal kickers always get drafted higher, all else being equal, and Molly's not a forward.

And Carlton would still take McDonald for the same reason -- they've already got McKay (a mid) and so badly need a forward that taking O'Hehir with McDonald still on the board would be silly.

Which would leave us with O'Hehir, making a lot of people on this board very happy. Thomas and O'Hehir coming off halfback would be pretty great.

Nice thought 👍

However I think that O’Hehir has so much upside that she may well be taken earlier.
She has genuine speed, elite endurance and attacks the ball.
Her run and carry for someone 180cm is a real point of difference.

She has MELBOURNE written all over her and she would flourish there and be a contributor from day one.
I am half expecting her name to be read out at pick two.

O’Hehir firming as a top three selection according to this.
If that's true then Sydney will take Zippy and we'll end up with Painter.

Could be much worse. It's just annoying that the first year WA starts producing multiple great players, we get a national draft and watch them vanish interstate.
