If that's true then Sydney will take Zippy and we'll end up with Painter.

Could be much worse. It's just annoying that the first year WA starts producing multiple great players, we get a national draft and watch them vanish interstate.

We can always lure them home in due course.

The net gain from a National Draft is monumental for us, yeah sure we don’t get first dibs on the WA talent, HOWEVER, now the size of the draft pool that we get to pick from …… quadruples.

Being restricted to WA talent alone created a massive negative divide between us merely trying to keep up with list improvements across the league and closing the gap and making headway in list improvement.

Previously the best we would get excited about was someone like Cleaver, who by comparison would be along way behind the pecking order the likes of:

Belloni
Brisbane
Mahoney

With a National Draft we now will get better value for our draft capital.

Previously we got to pick the best of the Kia, Hyundai now we can also pick from the European cars Mercedes, Audi and BMW.

Our list will improve dramatically over the next four years and we will finally be able to make some headway in the task of closing the gap between us and the genuine contenders.

Like the mens - just need to get rid of the bullshit system whereby the Northern States are mollycoddled and favoured.

So...we did nothing (as did most of the league)

Can't help but feel a little disappointed.
St Kilda just gave away Pick 8 for Amber Clarke. Clarke's very good, but she might not have made top 20 if she were a kid in this draft. Sometimes doing nothing is just fine.

Draft is more important than seasons gone by.

No point trading for the sake of trading in my view.

We have a great nucleus of talented young players and about to add another bull chip midfielder

We did bring in a backup ruck.

Otherwise, we turned over a third of the list last year and we’re quite young, so it’s probably ok to focus on organic growth this year.

Alternatively we can feel excited because we hold two very good picks for Mondays draft picks # 6 & # 24.

We are going to get two very good players with our draft capital, can’t wait to see who we get.

May as well hand North/Tas the 2025 flag now.
If they weren't red hot favourites for the premiership, they will be now with the addition of Eilish Sheerin.
Powerhouse.

Syd offloading Ella Heads was a surprise.

I was hoping we'd lure some established talent for a later pick akin to the Ali Drennan trade last year, or an untapped Irish talent for a packet of chips. However, now we get to be excited by the talent that comes in through the draft. Fingers crossed, no bloody ACL's this off-season. Johnson, Kavanagh to come into contention, saw them and Cleaver having a hitout on socials today 🤙 another year of XP for our mainly under 22 core group, into our second year of Daisy's tutelage and I am suuuuper excited to see how we develop over the next year or 2.

I want to see Rentsch absolutely bodying bitches through the midfield.

And all they got was an improvement in a late draft pick.

Another thing with this draft, so many talented small mids -- Rookie Me just uploaded a bunch more on their YouTube highlights page. Players who would have been Picks 20-30 a few years back, will now be getting picked from 40-70. Won't set the world on fire, but good enough to be a very solid contributor by today's standards.

Those talents used to be rare, now they're everywhere, and soon there'll be no excuse for an AFLW team not to have a very good player in every midfield spot. If we could grab one of them with our fourth or fifth pick, our midfield would look seriously stacked.

Eliza Reilly at HUN listing of top talent as

  1. Centra - Pies 100% just like Harley Reid was No1
  2. Harris - Suns to match
  3. O’Hehir - high interest Dees and GWS
  4. Fish - linked to Blues as they get a pick b4 McKay
  5. Scholz - linked to GWS and Blues
  6. Rasheed - linked to Swans
  7. Painter - she would be a perfect add to our midfield mix
  8. McKay - Blues to match
  9. Howley - hard not to like her and what she’d bring I’d still be happy
  10. Grieves - champs MVP so what’s not to like
  11. McDonald - KPF who might attract an earlier bid
  12. Belloni - bolter
  13. Symonds - KPF/Ruck but with foot issues
  14. Tallariti - best defender in the draft
  15. Riggs - best KPD in the draft but can go forward
  16. Harrington - Suns
  17. Salisbury - Suns
  18. McKee - small forward
  19. Poustie running machine
  20. Evans - mid forward
With Brisbane, Baba, Wright and Martin in the mix for R1. Take out Harris at 2, I’d be happy with any of the first 7 through to Painter

Not seen enough from Reilly but HUN normally get decent intelligence from clubs meaning the recent order changes are due to what she is hearing

Order
  1. Pies
  2. Dees
  3. GWS
  4. Swans
  5. Blues
  6. Eagles
  7. Dogs
  8. Drug Rats
  9. BODE
  10. Tigers
Suns hold 19, 27 and 30 to match Harris Harrington and Salisbury (ie 3 x R1 just to make Monocle happy)

Blues have 23 to match McKay

Eagles again in at 24

Happy to have a powerhouse in the AFLW whilst Freo are up and about.

Then for said powerhouse to be on the decline as we rise up to take their title.

Good to see Poppy Scholz getting some love , she has been very underrated.
Trouble with drafting her is that there will be a good chance that she requests a trade back home as her sister Matilda is already on Port Adelaide list.

Not surprised that she has Belloni so high and a bolter , very good player.

Riggs has the best overhead mark in this draft cohort, big gal that also crashes packs. Can also play in the ruck.
A tad slow but a smart player with a decent kick on her, for a tall she plays like a bull.
If she was a little more agile and athletic she would be top 5.

Will be interesting to see where Brisbane gets taken, would be very happy if she was there for us.

Another player that’s criminally underrated is Zoe Hargreaves who will be available for our second pick, should we not go a tall with that pick, Zoe is fast aggressive and has run and carry, great tackler she seems to like the physicality of the game.

* then a Supplemental Signing Period (SSP) straight after the draft from 17-18 December. International rookies and the like can be signed at this time too.

Praying we pull an Irish rabbit out of the hat 🤠

Lakay and Hosking sign extensions to play in 25 and Franklin has penned for two more years.

I like all three extensions. :thumbsu: :whitecheck:

I think our Forwardline is still going to be our weakest point next season. I feel like we absolutely need a powerful, lead up forward that is already developed. Franklin and Roux both have incredible boots on them and to have a developed forward to A. learn off of and B. Take the oppos best defender to let them find some space and opportunity would give our Forwardline an incredibly more dangerous edge.

Deadset agree - that being said with our first 2 picks each year likely to be ridiculous talents compared to the current landscape I'd be hesitant to pay up anything valuable draft-wise.

Ideally could find a Drennan type who can add that value but cost less due to age and also will naturally move on in a few years as the list turns over in that wave format clubs will need to be doing. Anyone stand out as a possibility?

According to this by Sarah Black, we'll probably end up with Painter.

She seems to think we might just miss Zippy by one pick -- if the Dees take O'Hehir, neither Sydney team want Fish that high, but Carlton will definitely take her if she's available.

Otherwise if the Dees take Fish, there might be some kind of chance (it seems) that the Sydney teams and Carlton get preoccupied with other picks and let Rasheed slip to us. But no chance O'Hehir does.

Seems I was right about Wright and Belloni too, both expected to go far higher than earlier predictions. I've still got fingers crossed that Wright slips to us at 24, but there's talk of Belloni going top 10.

Does it feel like (annoyingly) we're one pick off really getting an elite prospect in this crop?
No - I am still bullish

Belloni, Rasheed, Painter or Sholtz would all be great picks and we will get one of them. At pick 6, we will have a chance to get one of the top end talents. It is always personal but I sense the cut off is at 7 (excluding club tied) and then the drop off is not that steep.

How could you not love what Lou Painter would bring to the club and she would add a real point of difference to our midfield. She is as tough as Emma Swanson but has better skills and better decision making.
