Well another season done and dusted. Mostly disappointing games, with a coupe decent wins. Roberts and Thomas are pillars to build around.

Looking forward to the draft.

Ella Slocombe, not Cleaver or Shroj, is my call to be 1st picked by WCE, if their interstate targets don’t agree to come over.

Reckon we’ll see a Hooker retirement announcement? She played that last term like she wasn’t going to leave anything in the tank.
Good shout this mate. Let see

Four more Ella Roberts please!

Can burst away from packs, kick left foot, takes great marks, tackles, applies defensive pressure, makes things happen which lead to scores.

Star.

One thing you notice at the games is how much unrewarded/team running she does - she'll often sprint back to cover someone in the D50 then be the first one on the ground to have ran forward into our F50 to threaten as a target - may not touch the ball once but still have made an impact.

Think a major function of our system getting better needs to result in

A) us using her more in space (like how it took us a while to use Lewis Jetta)

B) The rest of the team lifting that sacrificial running (and their fitness) so she can be told not to waste herself doing that job as much - give her a bit of the Dustin Martin treatment where she's saving a litre of petrol or two for when she needs to burn opponents on the burst.

Franklin goes missing way too much.
And generally doesn't impact the play when she is involved, which is why I would always have Bartlett in over Franklin.

Both low possession players, but Bartlett has more impact with her's.

Hopefully Franklin has a good reset in the off season.

She needs to be doing strong leads into space, but currently when we bring the ball in, she is no where to be seen.

Bushby really looked promising today. Got involved and is looking way fitter and stronger already. Her and Davison the biggest improvers this season.

I liked Webb's positioning for a second-gamer and reckon she'll adapt to the pace. Zakfer has shown a bit too again today.

A few good signs from Western that made me remember why she was important for us last season. Another who should be really going to the next level but hasn't yet.

Ruck is a huge need for us to fill. I dunno if it'd help having 4 Ella Roberts if we're letting the ball out of the centre as easily as we have this season. I'm sure we'd be dead last for hit outs to advantage conceded.

Very annoying that our stupid rule of not being able to work at West Coast while playing at another WAFL club has forced out such a good football person in Brayshaw

I was wondering if that's the call he made. He's fired a few vague shots on the podcast without actually referring to it directly. Seems he might have decided to move on.

Absolute legend of a bloke, proper club man and morale booster. Bit of Masto vibes in that area. Reckon he will go on to become a fairly prolific media man in good time.

So who are peeps wanting with our first pick?

I am in the 🪓 camp myself.
Goal kicking tall that can do forward ruck duties 👍.
We lack quality height on our list .

They looked so much better in that last game. Finally they had some run and carry, like Daniel Pratt had, and for three quarters they were seriously competitive with the minor premiers. Yeah they went missing in the second quarter, but given where they're at it was always going to happen. So getting rid of Prior has worked wonders already. Management just need to get a good coach whose game plan has a lot more run and carry, and we'll get massively better results. Also, they haven't played this way as a team in years, making it even more remarkable that it worked so well.

Given how short we are of forwards, I reckon we can't go past Cleaver. Yeah, I know she's got netball too, but talent is talent. And either way, we'll still get two of the top three picks (and I think there's no more than three, really).

Signed at East Perth through end of 2025, so unfortunately yes.

That was before West Coast stink up though wasn't it? I would imagine he could get out of that contract if he wanted to. Understandably as a players player and captain of the side it means more to him to suit up for the Royals on a weekend and go find a job elsewhere that he doesn't have to watch his comments in the media, not discuss gambling etc should he wish to partake.

Kinda hope he has left. The Backchat podcast will be fire in 2024.

Fish, O'Hehir and Wright firming up as top three picks in next year's draft. Assuming we pick before Freo, (with Prior gone, and Freo backsliding, that's no longer certain) I reckon we'll get Fish and Wright. Then I think Chambers, Entwistle and Haines in no particular order, and maybe four or five others with potential who could put their hands up next season.

Looking at this list of next year and the year after, I count 14 dead certainties to be genuinely good AFLW players. No doubt I've missed some.
