Western Bulldogs want in on possible future Good Friday AFL game

V

Very true, but if there isn't a good crowd tomorrow night every large club will carry on all week about how our two clubs can't draw a crowd and shouldn't get to play on Good Friday. I am all for it being North versus the Bulldogs as I believe our two clubs are in similar positions being ripped off at Etihad and getting the worst of the draw. For that reason I think we should work together on something like this, rather than be sniping at each other

Perhaps you should tell your club President how you feel.

I read in an earlier post that he was pushing for Carlton but I haven't heard him doing that and I wonder whether he really is pushing very hard. As I posted earlier, I can't see how it would work, with Carlton already committed to season opener with Richmond which would often occur in the same week as Good Friday. If you remember the history where North and Carlton worked together on a proposal relating to the Children's Hospital and Channel 7 it is perhaps diplomatic to still mention Carlton but as a mug supporter I can't understand why we would want to play Carlton if it was only going to be on the years when they weren't playing Richmond

RCH appeal is not even the reason they don't play footy on Good Friday? It's definitely not a reason why it should be Carlton v North.

I was talking history and the fact that North Melbourne and Carlton previously proposed a Good Friday game linked with the RCH appeal. In my view that history has been overtaken by Carlton being given a season opener against Richmond which would sometimes be in Easter week, so I think it highly unlikely that Carlton would also be involved in a Good Friday game. Given that Channel 7 has broadcast the Good Friday appeal for decades and presumably would broadcast Good Friday footy I still expect there would be negotiations about how the footy would be linked to the appeal. I repeat this is not to suggest that Carlton should be involved.

Lol yeah, just wanted to chuck it in there, the Roos seem to be the constant for some reason.
The reason is that North Melbourne has been asking to play on Good Friday for 30 years, long before anybody else thought of the idea. Another reason is that the message is getting across (in no small part thanks to Peter Gordon) that there is an equity issue involved with regard to access to marquee games. Anyway last night ticked all the boxes for a Roos v Bulldogs marquee game: crowd size, atmosphere, quality footy and public interest. Put it in the calendar for next year.

Yeah all good I was just stirring the pot, you guys deserve to have Good Friday.

Latest word is that the AFL are set to approve the match, and the front-runners for the game are us and the Saints.

If true, I think North Melbourne have every right to be appalled. We've been pushing for some time (along with Carlton, who I don't think need any more 'blockbusters') so in my mind it should pretty clearly be a Bulldogs vs North game. I don't see how St Kilda could argue a stronger case than North (other than the likely state of their list in coming years).

I'm all for it. Dogs and Saints are building an awesome rivalry. My mate at work has done a graph of bulldog and saints ladder position for the last 20 years and we pretty much follow each other up and down. With the state of our lists we are going to have a decade of absolutely cracking games to turn the event into a blockbuster. That's what the AFL needs, not us flogging norf by 100 points every year when they fall off a cliff.

Please please please let Norc miss out even if it isn't us

The sh!t storm that would erupt would be monumental and I would enjoy poking the little bears

What a slap that would be for North.

Can't help but feel that some egos at North were far too attached to the idea of hitching this thing to the faded blues and didn't want to acknowledge us or include us in the equation.

Might come back to bite them...

I've always said that the Aints are our biggest rival

This would build into something and potentially this rivalry would be recognised by more neutrals including the AFL, but currently it isn't because haha you've both only won one flag and you're both minnows etc etc

I was annoyed that Gordon was pushing for the opening game against Collingwood last year, Collingwood don't need anymore exposure/marquee games, this to me makes more sense and helps both teams exposure through periods where both teams will expect exposure/commercial growth with their rises up the ladder

Going to go all 'conspiracy theory' for a minute.

I find it staggering that the AFL would shaft North so badly on this. Obviously some heavy politics involved.

I'm just wondering whether our rolling over on Taliagate had some kind of unwritten agreement attached? Could end up being the best thing Michael ever did for us...

What about Brad Scotts stuff up earlier in the year ?

I've been thinking about this too and what I'd suggest is that the AFL Commission wants the Good Friday Game to be between two Victorian teams that don't currently have access to/representation in blockbuster games. I believe that Gil has hinted strongly at this in the recent past.

There probably is only one submission before the AFL which meets these criteria...the proposal worked up by the Western Bulldogs and St.Kilda. Norf may have stupidly thrown their lot in with Carlton.

Yep think that is probably the most logical deduction. Maybe I'm still trying to hard to look for positives from the Talia event.

Before we get carried away, the article doesn't actually say that we're the frontrunners - just that we're working on a compelling proposal with the saints and that north are no certainty.
