Western Bulldogs want in on possible future Good Friday AFL game

No problems if they have a rotating schedule. Why not have WB v StK or Norf in year 1 and thereafter it's the reigning Good Friday champ vs the reigning premier? The two "GF" winners. Or the best placed Vic team if they want it to be a Vics-only event.

Then they could do something similar with ANZAC Day and QB games. Introducing the idea of "rotation " for Good Friday games would be the foot in the door for rotation of ALL marquee games. A politically savvy way of breaking down the entrenched advantage that certain clubs currently have.

Some posters over there seem to already be resigned to the fact they may not get it.
Some serious chips on shoulders happening.

Their selection of Carlton as their preferred team to play on Good Friday because the two clubs are geographically closest to the Children's Hospital is ridiculous and now it may cost them.

The hard yards that the Bulldogs put into Inventing Friday night football was the best hing we've ever done as a club and the magnanimity of our sharing it with the competition is our gift to the game. Along with our work developing the game in Ballarat, the Good Friday game is our just reward for being the pioneering club that we are.

Its a terrible time to bottom out for the norfs.

I can't help but think that they are using that as a throw away line. They want Carlton because they are a 'powerhouse' and they think the AFL are more likely to give it to them, because Blues will draw a crowd.

As much as i hate bigfooty Saints fans, I don't mind us putting in a submission with them. Minnows gotta help each other out! The melts will be glorious if we get it with the Saints. Maybe we can market as a battle between good and evil ;)

The norfs have picked a terrible time to be on the slide.

The only way they get it now, in light of the team probably not being a finals threat next year and their administration lurching from one PR disaster to the next, is out of sympathy for having tried for so long.

I think the AFL might hedge its bets and make it a rotating game.

IMO it loses is shine pretty quick if the rosters rotate and there's no real spirited rivalry built up between two specific teams. I'd prefer for it to be Bulldogs vs Saints every year and have it a traditional heated matchup between two young exciting teams.

Norf could barely get 20,000 to the boomer/petrie/spud farewell and clearly have no idea how to promote or market themselves. Not to mention their team is gonna be garbage for a while. Ugly duckling of Victorian footy.

Saints and dogs will make it a terrific contest with great PR.

Love this idea! Winner stays on. Just like a pool table at the pub.

Yeah I think North would be desperately unlucky to miss out, but at the same time perhaps they're submissions at the AFL have been somewhat weak (at least in comparison to ours), hence the AFL's apparent reluctance to give it to them? I've got no idea, but it's a possibility.

I do think it should be the same teams every year, a rotating fixture won't be enough to build the game up into anything significant. I'd hope it's us vs either North or the Saints.

I had a quick look at the North board to see what they had to say on the topic. My god, some of the posters on there seem absolutely rabid. It's difficult to read a single page on there, let alone the rest of the topics they are trying to discuss. Nothing but personal attacks and stupid repeated in-jokes or hashtags. If the Bulldogs board became like that I don't think I'd bother with Bigfooty.

If this comes to fruition we will have to play with ourselves in 2018!

This is a big test of the Commission's true support for equalisation. By choosing two of the "poorer" Victorian clubs they help the competition take a further step towards equality at no cost to the AFL or other clubs. The game can't feature Carlton, nor Adelaide, if the AFL is fair dinkum.

It's pretty simple, there's a new blockbuster game being created, the league know it will get huge ratings regardless of who's playing, they also want to give some sort of equalisation to the teams who don't currently have a blockbuster game.

What do north do? Go and tie their application to a team who already has multiple blockbusters because they think it will get them more money/bigger crowds. Lol seriously, great work JB. I wish you were sticking around for longer

I agree - I've said this on here before - I think that Norf made a huge tactical blunder by choosing Carlton. They must have thought that they are a shoe in for the game, so why not choose a big club to pair up with? They may still be correct, but I'll bet they are shitting themselves right now.

Had Norf partnered with us I suspect the AFL's decision would already be a foregone conclusion.

No rotating, please. The 2 teams selected have to own the day, just like Coll and Ess do. It becomes their day for ever.

Saints and Dogs have been bitter rivals for some time.....sounds good to me. Particularly if we have really emphasised the community based nature of the day.

I agree with the frustrations expressed here. North were greedy and stupid.

But I still want North to get it. I personally hope the AFL gives it to both of us, regardless of our proposals. I take no joy in the years of pain ahead for North.

Yeah this. North get as screwed as we do by the AFL

I ran that past the Norf board and to a man got told that I had a sense of entitlement which was undeserved because "they thought of it first".
