Just thought i would keep the big footy contingent updated on weather we have signed our chb/chf we were after.
Well no pen to paper yet but we have secured him a job and he trained the house down tonite. I will wait to name the player until 100% official.
After losing some quality last year we have replaced them all pretty comfortably, also to get winters back is a huge bonus and i think we can be a better team than last year with a bit of luck.

On another note what are peoples thoughts on the extra player on the bench???
Personaly i like it even though cost will go up.
Think it would be a great idea Rock, if a side loses 1 or 2 players before 1/2 time then they are really stretched. With that extra player on the bench you then will have the opportunity to cover that loss. If he is the 22nd player in your side he wont be on anything bar the minimum wage you would imagine.

It also would give an opportunity for coaches to be more creative and use there bench to the best of its ability. You would have fresher midfielders, hence a quicker pace of the game, and imo a better spectacle for the crowd.

I agree, i think it is a great idea. Is it a goer is it?

For coaches that use their bench well and for also clubs with good depth it will provide a lot of flexibility with on-ball/ midfield rotations.

It will ensure that good fresh legs are running through there for a lot longer periods throughout the game. Bring it on i say.

Not sure about this one. Another player on the bench may open it up for more midfield rotations and fresher legs but some of us purists enjoy watching games that slow down and allow for players with a real footy brains to take over. I'd hate to see some of our better onballers in the league spend more time on the bench because we've gone rotation mad. I still enjoy watching them going to the forward line and create goals through pure footy nouse.

Has anyone started using the Hawthorn zone during the pre-season? If so, how is it going? Badly I hope.

I dont think any side has the cattle to pull that off!

rotations at this level are a waste really, obviously everyone needs a rest at some point but i don't agree with players coming at a certain time of a quarter and going back after 4 or 5 mins etc we're just not at that level

i even disagree with it at afl level at times, i watched a game last yr when brent harvey had something 8 posseisions in the first 10 mins then he had to come off for his rotation, why would you take him off if he was killing them doesn't make sense surely you wait til he needed a rest, you'd doubt a player at that level would be stuffed after 10 mins

having said that i believe 4 on the interchange will be very beneficial to coaches and clubs, how many times at the selection table do think think selectors have disagreed or um @ argh about the 21st player they pick, do we go tall of short etc, don't think this will happen with 22 coaches will pick a balanced squad interesting to see what people think after we're a couple of round in to the season

Hope they dont. Im not real keen on chasing any more a#se than I already do. Its been 3 on the bench for all this time, why change it now? Stuff the AFL bcos thats what they do. We are local footballers and it is a slower pace bcos thats where we are at. Although we want the games to be a good spectacle, we dont owe anything to the crowds in regards to making the game quicker for 'the spectacle'. In local footy, these supporters will come irrespective of the pace or standard of the game bcos they support that club.

As for it solving the problem of who to chose for the 21st spot, it wont make a fifference as it will now be the '22nd best person to pick' problem. Where do you draw the line? Why is 22 any better than 21? Why not 23 or 24? Leave it as it is and stuff what rules other comps want to cahnge. If it not broke, dont fix it.

Who have got practice matches this sat? We have Bell Post Hill on Sun in Geelong.

I think that Travvy hit the nail on the head.... 4 on the bench will benefit teams with good depth.

The gap between the top and bottom teams is a major issue in the WRFL. The men in charge at HQ seem to be oblivious to this and have made no attempt to address the issue. On top of this they now introduce a rule that can only make the gap bigger.

I don't know if the 22nd player will have much of an impact on the comp. It will just mean that one bloke plays alot less! It will take a few years for coaches to work out how to best use the 4th bloke on the bench

We, Orden have Airport West this week, and Bell Post Hill next week. Cavca and Venna playing up there ? A run down nest week would be good Beazer.

is your chf/chb caddy? has he returned to the club? if not him want are we expecting from this recruit? and how old?

No not caddy although he is a former colts player. He will play mainly chb and allowing debruyn to play chf, davey from pmfc will play full back allowing bonnett to play h/back wing, winters also back release macanulty up the ground. As i said in an earlier post i think we have a more balanced team this year, so should be exciting. Looking forward to round 1.

On the new bench rule, personaly speaking i will not rotate any more, at our level the pace of the game will not go uo as the quality of midfielders at our clubs is not very deep, i hope clubs use it against us when we have julier, jacobs x 2 and twomey/masis, could only imagine they damage we would do against second string onballers.
We will use our 22nd man as a specialst stopper who plays in spurts, great spot for the older blokes.

If you feel you need to use a specialist stopper against a side(s), why would you not pick him in the best 21 but have him in if there were 22 selected?

any more word on the possible bush fire inter league game
between EDFL Vrs WRFL at Whitten ?

I Work with a fanatical Pro EDFL guy who says bring it on:

would pull a big crowd dont you think

Stated at last Tuesday's Committee of management meeting that the 2 Leagues couldn't pull this concept game together - instead WRFL Round 1 to be Bush Fire Appeal Round with palyers wearing yellow arm bands and fund raising taking place for donation to either Red Cross or AFL so a sthe proceeds go towards a football community in replacing destroyed equipment

Thanks for that info Beazer.

This officially makes Bell Post Hill a pack of liars. They cancelled a practice match against my club this weekend with the excuse of not enough players due to cricket finals.

Honestly bud, does it surprise you? Bell Post Hill are fast becoming Hoppers super rules. May coaching with Dickson, Cavka, Venner off the top of my head. Taylor will probly be ther next year too. May even get Doyle and Kanga up ther for their pension.

Well we know who you are now after coming to our ground last friday nite, then bagging a few of us on here the following day. Don't bother coming back............your not welcome yellow bellie!!

BnF. O'Keefe or D. Jacobs
Goals. Buttina (fit) but wouldn't mind seeing Spooner from Saints slot heaps more.

Filodamus' 2009 predictions.

Wests to go down to div2 in 2010. Libba will leave in disgrace but will to do so with a fist full of dollars.

The gap between the haves and the have nots will close a bit but not to the degree that most people are predicting. Bottom three sides will be smacked mercilessly by the top four. Fourth from the bottom will be brought back to earth when they venture away from the cage.

Beazer's tan to fade by round 3 but will have no effect on his game.

The Beer Van Patrons at Colts will take the season to recover from the reality that Crackers doesn't play for Spotty anymore so they need to find someone else to taunt.

Stories of unrest at Spotty will continue to plague BigFooty.

The WRFL won't get any tougher but will require more cash from clubs to fund their softly, softly approach.

South Melbourne Dim Sims sold at Colts will rise in price but sales will still be great because they are that damn good.

more to come.....

2 weeks to go to the GF rematch, Spotty unfurling their flag in front of the faithfull, assuming the past players will be in their tent again??? Both sides will be missing a few from last years team. The Colts have the wood over Spotty at their home ground, I'm tipping our boys in a thriller.......Go the Colts!!! Bonnett or one of the Jacobs to be BOG! (good breeding in that family).
