What British Soccer Heads think of AFL

A 0-0 draw means both sides are in the game untill the final seconds. Maybe not that exciting if your a neutral, but when it's an important game a 0-0 draw can be thrilling.

Can you back that up with statistic? No? Then cram it.

Just a few scorelines pulled from the first soccer site I opened which was a video archive. I think it's noteworthy that in just one tournament, in a week long span, is where those results came from. That's as much investigating as I care to do.

All internationals. What a surprise.

Its pretty funny. Im not going to start watching soccer and I doubt they will start watching AFL so ... meh.

Main problem with Soccer for me is the leagues are so money controlled that it makes the whole league is boring. Take the EPL. Chelsea, Liverpool, Man U, Arsenal. The rest (in terms of winning the league) are also rans. That is the most boring thing about the game over there.

The World Cup on the other hand is AWESOME. The EURO internationals comp is pretty good too, especially if you are in the host country.

Reckon more to do with the exhibition matches held at the oval that over the years have more often then not turned into punch on's, this along with 30-40 drunken expat aussie streakers each time they have one of these games. Having lived there (and been guilty of being a drunken expat) most brits you mention Aussie rules to mention the punch ons at the oval.

are you thinking what Im thinking...... i wana go to the oval...

Until they magically repair themselves about 30s after a ref doesn't pay them a free ;)
This happens quite often in Football, but is slowly being stamped out (no pun intended):

Not aware of any contact injury in Aussie Rules that puts you out of action for longer (that's if the guy ever plays again)

NOTE: Video is not for the squeamish

More broken legs in Football than Aussie Rules!!
That's because AFL players make body on body contact, whereas Soccer tackling (if done wrongly) will take out the legs. You might as well say that AFL has more shoulder injuries than Soccer.

As for the actual skit, it's obvious they were low on material so they punctuated every weak punchline with a punchup. My issue isn't with the stereotypes, it was that they just weren't funny.

It's like the Chaser's "Make a Realistic Wish" foundation sketch, quite a few shows have done the similar sketches with the same subject matter, but the Chaser one just wasn't funny so people got all up in arms about it. If we actually laughed, we wouldn't mind so much.

We could use another exhibition match in England, wouldn't hurt to let them know that the game has evolved from the punchups they saw in the 80s.

There aren't many people who magically repair themselves after a Kevin Muscat tackle Haggis ;)

Obviously you didn't read what you cut & pasted, since the first one is from the confederations cup in South Africa, and the rest are from an under-23 tournament in France.

And in any case, what is the point you're trying to make? That there were a lot of close matches? Gosh - thats a terrible thing to happen

I know I'm not going to convince anyone who watched the vid and hated it, but man, I loved it, mostly for the nostalgia factor. I used to watch Soccer AM nearly every week when I lived in the UK, and it's great to see this stupid segment again. Particularly to see it done with Aussie Rules characters, even if it does take the piss out of Aussies and the game.

This type of thing happens every week where they have a couple of idiots dressed up as stereotypical characters and they make mostly terrible puns with ridiculous over the top accents. It's completely ******ed, but they're well aware of that, and it always managed to get a few laughs out of me. Good stuff! :thumbsu:

Didn't think I'd need to state that the top score was from the initial match I referenced and the rest from one tournament. It's written next to them. Stupid old me just assuming other people could see why I included the first match I spoke about. But of course I don't read so why assume others do

The point is not that they were close.. it's that they were boring. 5-4 is close.

Goddamn that was nasty. Those injuries do happen through contact in AFL as Brissy fans are all too well aware having watched Vossy's leg flap around like jelly some years ago. It's good that soccer is trying to rub out staging. The Klinsmann dive in the 1990 WC final has always been the one that sticks in my mind as a bullshit act pretty much decided the biggest prize in soccer. Made the game very unattractive. And just to reaffirm the low scoring point.. that game ended 1-0 ;)

Funnily enough, the most exciting rugby league match I've ever seen was a State of Origin game where the final score was 2-0. Think about it...

That's because, like soccer, league is boring. Bloody flat lined, overlapping, stop-start thugs game.

Please don't take a show hosted by Tim Lovejoy as a guide to what British people think. He is one of the most despised people in British/Media/Sporting life. An absolute t o ss bag of the highest order.

Who cares? It's mildly amusing. Lol at posters on here saying they're scared of our game

A turn-up for the books with this program. Awful childish tabloid show even when talking about soccer.

The host caps it off, Im not sure there is a more self-absorbed smug prick on British TV.

Dont read too much into it, not many over the age of 17 with half a brain would of seen it.
