I remember that story, it was very touching.

Apparently he was a very good footballer, but being deaf is a major disability. Losing half an arm is to, but Sammy still has the skills. Being deaf with all the communication needed with the AFL would be extremely tough.

Yeh his name is Jason Hartley, dont think he will get drafted though. Yeh Sam Carpenter (the one armed guy) would get drafted before so i agree with jenno.

But dont get me wrong Jason has done extremely well to do what he has done, its a fantastic story.

joel is a very decent player, i played school footy with him and against him in o and m, he has all the assets of a solid footballer, very few holes in his game considering, good luck to the kid he will be around for a long time in senior o and m
cheers
p.s. his story was told very well by the footyshow, cudose

From watching the Footy show, I noticed he took his hearing aids out when he played? Why would that be? Being deaf myself, I wear the hearing aids underneath a helmet (to prevent from falling off). I never had a problem. With his hearing aids out his communication skills will be low. For a sport which requires plenty of talk, it certainly would make it hard.

Which is the main reason he won't make it.
Communication is everything in football these days.
Very good player though.

Do you know why he takes his hearing aids out?
Its actually a good question, i never really asked him, i just assumed it was so they wouldnt get broken i would expect they are worth a mint, and maybe he doesnt like helmets, sorry i cant shed much light on that one, but i guess it has to do with the type of aid or something, im guessing they arnt water proof thats my tip,
cheers

-The hearing aids would be government funded- no cost for him or family

-They arn't water proof, but wearing a helmet over them covers that.- There is only about 3 areas where it can damage the hearing aids and all three areas are almost impossible to get wet, walking in the rain i rarely get water in them. Ive'd fallen in a pool and the water still didnt get through.

-Wearing a helmet holds them in.

-With hearing aids communication skills would be much better

IMO if he is a chance, he may lose that chance as a result of not simply putting on a helmet.......

Being deaf myself and going through everything he has been through, certainly makes me think.....

I hope he can make it, there arn't many elite sport people who are deaf who can become idols for young deaf children.
