Autopsy What have you liked, learnt and hated from Season 2015

Liked - The even spread of the competition, on any given day anyone can almost beat anybody

Learnt - With teams like the Bulldogs rising when expecting to fall and Port falling when expecting to rise, the game is constantly evolving and coaching methodology is constantly changing.

Hated - The Adam Goodes saga. The instigator and the victim, the whole ambassador and yet the AFL trying to intervene and everyone carrying on about how much of a champion he is (we all knew before).
Also hated the whole interpretation of umpiring changing from week to week, seems to be all about technicality rather than common sense.

Best Memory
The Phil Walsh Tragedy/Brett Ratten Tragedy, it was devastating how they unfolded, it really highlighted tragic circumstances in society and how if affects everyday life. The way the AFL payed its respect, from every player in the centre circled with silence and respect of each game, to the hand shake and running on to the field together really shows how strong the AFL is as a community and how it trancends the game itself. Even though the football was still being kicked, the way compassion was shown was a beautiful moment despite the tragedies.

Liked: Richmond's mid to late season form. We are a real team now.
Disliked: The way live against the gate steals a bit of athmosphere.
Learnt: Footy is fundamentally unpredictable. Any team can rise above expectations ( Dogs ) and any team can have a slide ( Cats ) Any of the finalists can win the GF.

Loved - The Dogs season. Everything looked so bleak prior to round 1. What a turn around. Win or lose next Saturday I'll be happy.

Liked - Carlton winning the spoon and Carlton's ex players out scoring them for the year.

Hird getting the arse finally. Had to happen.

St.Kildas season. I think they are building a quality list and have a good coach at the helm.

Hated - Drug saga continuing. Wish it ended when the players were initially cleared.

Learnt - Inexperience is not a valid excuse for losing.

Liked - Open forward lines...good style footy played by good teams.

Disliked - AFL is becoming more and more of a propaganda machine

Too many shit Friday games

North Melbourne hogging more than their fare share of Friday night games.
We had two scheduled. The 3rd was because of how the season panned out. How is that hogging?

Liked:
- Our resurgence back to the finals after one of the biggest blows a club could be dealt.
- The response of the AFL community to our club, particularly the players.
- The way the Bullies go about it and the job Beveridge has done.
- Watching Jesse Hogan emerge and dominate.
- West Coast overcoming massive injuries to finish way above everyone's expectations.

Learned:
- This is comp will never, ever be an even one and the AFL is hellbent on wringing as much money out of football as they possibly can ... to the detriment of football itself. Gilligan can talk about the fans all he wants, but we really know what makes AFL House tick.
- That the AFL is making shit up as they go along. Tanking/no tanking, MRP's Wheel of Fortune/tribunal guesswork, some gestures to the crowd are fineworthy/some are cultural celebrations.

Hated:

- Commentary. Employed because of football smarts and yet they fail to use them in the comm box, strangely thinking they're in there because they're comedians. If I were to give out podium finishes to the best three commentators in the AFL, I'd struggle to fill the podium.
- AFL "journalists". Sub-standard guess merchants that masquerade as journalists and "news breakers". Proven oxygen thieves time and again.

fast-paced games involving the Dogs, Saints, Crows, Eagles, Port, Giants and Tigers.
The continued success of Adelaide Oval
Rapid slingshots up the ladder (Bulldogs, Eagles)
The nrL melt following the AFL's media deal
Hird FINALLY resigning
Footy industry's response to Walsh's death
Crows back in the finals!

Learned
Attended a post match function at the learning life centre after the second Sydney derby this year. GWS feel like a real club.

Hated
Media negativity. I've found this year to be a fantastically close competition with some amazing games, but all you hear the media talk about is that the quality of play is awful.
Robbo. I'm done with him.
Mark Ricciuto still hasn't discovered the letter 'H'

Essendon and Hird - I liked that finally, those responsible for the supplement program are now out of there club. It will allow the club to heal and finally move on.

Richmond - The fact we have finally built a list that can make the finals consistently. We play finally a mature brand of footy, can it win a final, we will know on Sunday but whatever happens, the club itself has shown its a professional run and managed club. No longer do we bow down to pressure but stick to what we believe in and i am proud to be a member.

West Coast - I cant stand most of there BF posters as the vocal minority that loves to troll other clubs are pretty vocal but I have really liked what they showed this year. Simpson had every excuse in the world to have a crap year but to get his team to perform the way they have, with the injuries they have, clearly makes him an outstanding coach.

Bulldogs- I liked the fact that this small club has started to flex a little muscle. They could have folded early this year with all the bleak news prior to round one but credit to the club, they really played there way all year and that takes strength. Still think buying boyd was a huge mistake was to reactive but outside of that, from list management, to on field performance they have been A plus.

The footy world - Loved how they got around the crows after the tragedy of Phil Walsh passing. It restored my faith in the over all goodness of people.

Loved the fact that the Pies, blues and bombers all missed the finals this year, while we are playing finals. And the side plus, we beat all three this year twice :)

Learnt

The AFL is a corrupt organisation to its core. I was like most, I wanted the bombers punished for what they did for trying to skirt the envelope as that really puts the competition as a whole at risk if they got away with it BUT the AFL showed by its way of trying to "deal" its way out of it as a corrupt organisation. it was disgusting.

Melbourne- Needs to make Goodwin coach now. Get him to lead his players. Having a rent a coach does not work IMO. You have won slightly more games but is that on the back off buying more players ?

Hated

Bloody hate those that keep on saying " Win a final" lol. before it was " make a final" now its "win a final", shits me to tears.

hate Robbo, that prick has no right being the Head bloke for the Sun. His biased reporting on a lot of things this year on footy was rubbish.

hate the afl, if it was not for the love of my club, I would piss this game off this year.

Changing the rules mid year and the overall quality of umpires, they still have not improved.

Hated teams getting smashed with injuries early and never recovering, I wanted Leppa to have a good year but with the cattle missing, his club never had a chance

To be strictly correct, we haven't learnt that yet, and though it is of course mathematically possible, history so far suggests they can't.

But totally agree with your point about the unpredictability of the ladder from year to year. I love that about our game. (Well, so long as my team keeps making the finals, that is!)

Liked:
- Cripps, Hogan, West Coast, Western Bullies
- The AFL response to the Phil Walsh tragedy
- Hird gone

Learned:
- Tribunal is still inconsistent
- The AFL could acknowledge they failed with the sub rule

Hated:
- Carlton's lack of game plan, talent and effort. Deserved to finish last.
- Mark Robinsons Hird bias. What an absolute tosser. Could not get his head any further up sir James' backside. Has no credibility.

Liked:
- Wingard continuing development into the best small forward in the comp
- The Krak comeback, development of Ah Chee and S.Gray
- Paddy Ryder
- Good performances of teams like Dogs, Saints and Crows when everyone wrote them off to be cellar dwellers

Learnt:
- Being the corrupt organisation the league is, I learnt that the AFL will not only bend but break the rules and stop at nothing to manufacture a win alas Carlton vs Port this year

Hated:
- The growing racism in the sport in recent times as well the increasing apologists trying to camouflage it as "freedom of speech"

Liked:
More attacking footy from the majority of the top 8
Still in with a chance for a 3peat
Young teams developing quicker than expected
The afls/clubs handling of the tradgeies this year
Draw that made the ladder look interesting at round 15

Learnt:
Predicting winners each week, so thinking you have the 8 pegged at seasons start is stupid.
Attacking footy is slowly coming back
That the AFL continues to be the most amateur professional sporting comp in the world

Hated
Whole Goodes affair
Commentary of games. Somehow it got worse
ASADA/wada still going.

Liked - Dogs, Eagles, Crows and Saints showing all sorts of fire along the way.

The openess of the competition.

The rise of Cripps and Hogan.

The Essendon implosion.

Hated - Everyone thinking that the AFL tribunal was the last word on Essendon. WADA were always coming...

Losing in NZ again.

Melbourne. There is just no light at the end of that tunnel and Roos has been shown for what he is - a fraud.

Learnt - AFL is just a team version of WWE. Much better to assume it's all rigged before you head in instead of thinking it's a legit sports industry. Still fun to watch though :thumbsu:

Has St Kilda as a team who 'showed fire' - and the Dees hve no light at the end of the tunnel...

Meanwhile we beat the Cats, Dogs, Tigers, Pies and the Giants and also finished above the Saints on the ladder.

No light? Please. 7 wins this year is an improvement again.

Pre-season everyone expected some improvement from Melbourne. You were supposed to get better but every second week the talk was about how bad you are. Meanwhile St Kilda were doomed to another spoon and were yet to hit rock bottom yet we recorded the 5th biggest comeback in AFL history and looked more than competitive until the last month of the season when the kids ran out of puff.

When Roos leaves next year you will be in the exact same place you were when you sacked Dean Bailey, with Simon Goodwin having to come in and reshape the list and playing style once again. He is going to have to do a mini rebuild on Paul Roos' job of rebuilding the rebuild that Mark Neeld started after the failed Dean Bailey rebuild.

I'm glad you are optimistic about your club, you have to be. I just don't see how another year of Roos is going to be anything but treading water.

One of the dumbest things I've ever read on Big Footy. If you can't see the difference in our club from then to now this conversation should stop here.

I adore the irony in your post. I really do.
I know a few guys who hit steroids for their body building. they get a bit weird when on them and the downs are pretty severe at times. They aren't good things to be on
But i would happily have them living next door over anyone on Ice and the s*** that does to them.
If you think PEDS are worse than illicit drugs, i have no words for the lack of perspective you have

In sport PEDS are significantly worse than illicit drugs because it's cheating.

Your neighbor ****ing their/your life up on meth is a whole different conversation. The AFL may have a role in social commentary and setting a positive example but it's significantly different from the obligation they are under to ensure that PED doping is kept out of the sport.

Only someone with their hand caught in the PED cookie jar would try to argue the reverse of priorities.

One of the dumbest things I've ever read on Big Footy. If you can't see the difference in our club from then to now this conversation should stop here.

2011 - 8 wins total, def 1 finalist (Ess) % of 85.

2015 - 7 wins total, def 2 finalists (Rich, WB) % of 77

If anything you may have gone backwards...

Yes, you are better than you were under Neeld but you are still only just getting back to where you were 5 years ago and you're not there yet. Exactly as I said.

When Bailey left you brought in one of the top rated assistants in the AFL. A guy that a coaching legend in Mick Malthouse vouched for. You then went backwards at a rate of knots. Now when Roos leaves next year you will again be bringing in one of the top rated assistants in Simon Goodwin. A guy that a coaching legend in Paul Roos vouches for.

Can you really say, with ANY confidence, that you will be better off? Will Goodwin play the same style? Favour the same players? Want the same structures? Continue the same development pathways? He might do what Nathan Buckley has done and blow the list up to rebuild it the way he wants.

It's not about the talent on the park, there are plenty of good players there just as there were in 2011, but let's not pretend like Paul Roos has been a miracle worker here and that you are a million miles better off than you were back then because your not.
