Just an aside, I would have thought the reason we were expected to take Polak was because most thought Judd would go in the top 2 and wouldnt be available for us? Then when he became available the recruiters jumped? By the looks of the draft we probably didnt think any of the mids after were worth picking up over the best rated KPP in the draft who also happened to be from WA.

Correct. I posted a link in the megathread a few days ago to Matt Burgan's phantom, which had Ball and Judd going 1 and 2. Apparently Hawthorn threw a curveball by picking Hodge (my hazy recollection that Ball was the bolter was incorrect)

So basically the last time a club took someone unexpected at pick 1?

And he turned out to be the best number 1 ever pretty much.

Yet the recruiters never learn the lesson.

Well it depends what you mean by unexpected. Melbourne surprised everyone by picking Watts, but the decision was made (and widely known) a few days ahead of the draft.

Really? I remeber him being one of the most hyped number ones well before any
draft.

I guess thats why eyewitness testimony is considered unreliable

Watts going to Melbourne was set in stone basically about a month from the draft IIRC. He bolted up the order on the back of the Larke medal but everyone knew pretty early that Melbourne were going to pick him.

Following Freo and the Spuds can't be easy.

Your telling me! I've also just started supporting the Raptors in the NBA.....

Maybe you should worry about your own recruiting department over the years. Shit decisions like McLeod and Lloyd come to mind along with peter bell.

Who cares if some agreed with you. You are the only one who posted this in our board.

I am very worried about my teams recruiting department at the moment, haven't really given much thought to what happened 20 years ago (McLoed) or what didn't happen (Lolyd).

Bigfooty when I posted this was significantly smaller and many team boards couldn't be sustained with their supporters alone (Freo being one), also due to the size there was significantly more recurring interactions between posters which built up a rapport.

Should have picked Polac over Judd, holy shit that is one the funniest things I have ever read!! Was that even a discussion at the time??
If you go back and read the draft thread of the day, this board was in meltdown over Judd being picked. Polak was highly rated. Very highly rated.

Nope. Most wanted Polak over Judd. It's hard to see now but Polak was very highly rated at the time. Judd also had dodgy shoulders and was a risk. Hodge, Ball, and Judd were neck and neck for number 1 and his shoulders would have been the difference why Hawks and Saints picked Hodge and Ball in front of him.

Nope. It wasn't unexpected at all. Hodge, Ball and Judd were always neck and neck and neck for #1. West Coast were expected to take Polak at 3 but no one knew which of those 3 players were going to go 1 and 2.

This is actually the last time our recruiters selected a bona fide, contested ball winning, inside midfielder with a top ten pick.......

21 years is a long time between inside midfielders
