What is the most famous number at your club??

Most amusing product of the Scully Saga: Melbourne fans bitching about him tarnishing the 31, by taking the money and running. Even though that's precisely what the most decorated 31 at Melbourne did... AND he went on to play at his new club under 31. Funny stuff.

Totally different circumstances, and Barass led us to a premiership or two in his day.

Not apples for apples mate.

i golfing circles a brett alison 33 ( points awarded for a 18 handicapper paring a par 3) ,

justin madden 42 (points awarded for a 18 handicapper boeying a par 3 or a scratch maarker parring a par 4),

alex marcou 34 (points awarded for a 18 handicapper boeying a par 3 or a scratch maarker parring a par 4),

alex jesilinko 25 (points awarded for a 32 handicapper birdying a par 3)

are often quoted due to the numbers coming up often when using the stableford scoring system.

as you can imagine the call ox jesalinko is often just a rauciaus after a high handicapper drains a durdy put as it was when he took some of his famous screamers.

even steevie milne 44 gets a call when someone with a shot birdys a par 5!

It's not even related to the thread topic

Number 26

The cult hero number - first Clive then Kep. Only guys known by their first names are allowed to inherit it.

But realistically ours is obviously #29. Once Pav retires it will be our first number with bit of honour attached to whoever inherits it.

Not apples for apples mate.

He turned his back on his mentor, he disgraced the number that his slain father wore, and ultimately sent Melbourne into an deep stupor that it hasn't pulled itself out of to this date. And it was a cash grab, no doubt.

What's worse, he brought premierships to Carlton - dog act.

If he had stayed, and succeeded Smith, it's more than likely that Melbourne would still be a significant club. How he can be forgiven for what he did is beyond me, premiership player or not.

Some kid with a dicky knee who got drafted by a team that had deliberately sent itself to the bottom of the ladder for priority picks anyway will be a mere blip in footballing history compared to Barassi's defection. Within a year most Melbourne supporters won't really give a stuff anymore, anyway.

Drawing a bit of a long bow there bud.

For the record, Scully purely leaving isn't the issue.

Probably been stated already a dozen times, so just re-affirming the no.17 for Richmond - Captain Blood (Jack Dyer) It's currently the number assigned to the club captain too.

You realise just how bad and irrelevant Melbourne have been over the past 40 years when you see a post like this.

Watts and Norm Smith

Not only has Watts done nothing to enhance the legacy (which is arguable seeing as NS was famous for coaching, not playing) but the poster can't even think of another worthy name to put in.

Farmer and Wonna as well. **** me. Melbourne's only had two good players since Barassi. Flower and Stynes. It's dire.

Ease up mate. That list of numbers was a huge stretch, and Melbourne hasn't had a star in far too long, but you're going a bit overboard. I'dd add Lyon to Flower and Stynes as "good" players since Barassi. Others might add Gary Hardeman, although he was no star of the game.

And to suggest that Norm Smith was only famous for his coaching shows an ignorance of the game's history. 210 games, 546 goals and four premierships was a sensational playing career. Success has been far too rare at Melbourne but at least show a bit of respect where it's due.

Just read the other post where someone was sledging Barassi for leaving for Carlton. Can't believe how much hate some people have for Melbourne when we haven't won a flag in nearly half a century.

With the media coverage in recent weeks over player numbers (ie: What should Geelong do with Ablett's famous no 5? And young Ben Matthews from the Swans taking up No 4 this season)I was wondering what number do you consider to be your club's most famous.

I think at the Kangaroos, our most famous number is 27. It was worn by Laurie Dwyer, stories I hear about him are legendary, then there was Keith Greig - no doubt the best wingman to ever play for the club, followed by Darren Crocker - who's career was devestated by injuries, but nevertheless still gave the club 10 years + service.

Lol at this OP, Who the hell is Laurie Dwyer?

18 is easily the most famous (I know its posted in 2001)

I reckon for the Swans 31 is it. Kirky - nuff said! (Dont kick it to) Stefan Carey, and the Pig catcher Darren Holmes, are three recent bearers.
