Well, sort of...Melbourne lost to Footscray in the '61 preliminary final, but they had lost to Hawthorn the week before, yes.

My old man was at that 1990 final (he's a Tigers man but hey, he was pretty starved of finals action at the time). Said that Melbourne's third quarter was superlative and that the Hawks shot themselves in the foot in the last quarter with some terrible misses.

Yep....Spot on there on both counts Doss....I too went in 1990 & in the final quarter when we were coming home like a steam train....The normally reliable Chris Langford kicked out from a behind. With 5 minutes left & only 10 points behind, He preceded to put a 25 metre pass down the throat of a Demons player straight in front.....Game Over....The Look on Chris Mew's face towards Langers Was Priceless!

Whats the longest time before a clubs first premiership ?

freo must be a good chance

Footscray, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, St Kilda all well over Freo's current 20 year drought.

Nice try though, I don't think anyone will ever be more obsessive than you in BF history!

Only player to play 300 games, win a brownlow, win a norm smith, multiple all Australian, and 3 premierships.

Simon Black is the only player to ever achieve this, and I think it will be a very long time before someone else does. Unless Gazza manages to win another premiership, but I doubt it.

Jimmy Bartel's on 249 games, I wouldn't count him out just yet.

Yeah, he turns 30 in December and should be on 270-odd this time next year. He obviously needs three more seasons and not to get any years practically wiped out due to injury and he'd be up around the 300 mark when he's 32, going on 33. He's played 20+ games every year for the last nine and he's played more than 22 games in seven of those.

The only issue is Geelong players seem to be cursed, with regards to the 300 game milestone. In the past 17 years, we've had seven players who have retired or left the club with 250-299 games, without anyone cracking 300 in over 30 years. And unless Enright's got two more years in him, it's going to be eight.

Judd's not without a chance either; only needs 41 games. With his recent history though, he'd be no certainty to play 41 in two years.

As others have said, thats not even close to an unbeatable record. Bartel is already well on his way, and Gold Coast could easily win a flag in the next three/four years for Ablett to slot in as well. Heck, if Steve Johnson can manage to play a full season for a change, he could almost be up there as well.
