I thought about whether to post this or not, but only doing so for the fans on this board. If you look at the video, Smith was responding to Tuohy's first little headbutt. No is doesn't justify it, but that put the thought in Smith's head - he would not have thought to do that action otherwise.

AFL MRO, tribunal news: Bailey Smith reported for headbutt on Zach Tuohy

An AFL legend says he’s bracing for what the tribunal says about Bailey Smith’s headbutt after Lance Franklin’s strike on Trent Cotchin was labelled “cowardly”.

AFL: Bailey Smith has been placed on report for a headbutt right on three quarter time in the Bulldogs clash with the Geelong Cats.

Western Bulldogs star Bailey Smith faces a stint on the sidelines after being reported for headbutting in a moment of madness during Friday night’s 13-point loss to Geelong.

Smith was involved in a heated exchange with Geelong’s Zach Tuohy during the three-quarter-time break at Marvel Stadium, which escalated to the Bulldogs wingman being put in the book by field umpire Andrew Stephens.

Tuohy clutched his head after Smith’s headbutt appeared to make contact with his forehead.

The Cats backman was sporting a noticeable red bump on his head after the exchange, which followed a brief physical tussle between the pair.

Tuohy and Smith embraced after the final siren in a sign of no hard feelings.

“Emotions were obviously getting the better of both of us,” Tuohy said of the incident.

“There’s not much in it. It was all love in the end.”

Later in a post-match interview with Seven’s Brian Taylor, the defender played down the mark on his forehead even further when he claimed he “just scratched my head on the grass”.

Smith faces a one-week ban if the headbutt is classified as intentional, low impact and high contact by AFL match review officer Michael Christian.

A grading of medium impact could see Smith miss two matches.

Fremantle forward Michael Walters had a one-match ban overturned for headbutting Melbourne’s Jay Lockhart overturned by the AFL tribunal in 2019, with the Dockers successfully arguing the light contact made was incidental rather than intentional.

However, the Bulldogs would struggle to mount a similar case for Smith.

Brisbane champion Jonathan Brown said the headbutt was an unusual sight in the modern game.

“Absolute brain snap,” Brown said on Fox Footy.

“The old Liverpool kiss. We don’t see it very often. I can’t think of any teammates that have done it.

“What’s the AFL going to say about that? They called Buddy Franklin’s act cowardly. Jeez, that’s worse.”

Luke Beveridge’s side has a bye next week, before games against Greater Western Sydney and Hawthorn kick off a big back half of the season.

Smith, who missed the previous week’s win over West Coast through illness, had played a key role in getting his side back in the game after Geelong opened up a 40-point lead early in the second quarter.

Bailey Smith is getting weeks! That was filth.
— Corey Norris (@coreynorris9) June 3, 2022

The 21-year-old logged 15 disposals across the second and third quarters of the match, after managing just two touches in the opening term.

He has averaged 31.6 disposals across his 10 matches this season.

Geelong lost key defender Tom Stewart to a concussion during the second term, when he collided with Smith’s shoulder as he attempted to lay a tackle.

However, Stewart will be out of the AFL’s 12-day concussion protocols in time for the Cats’ next match against West Coast in Round 14, given the side has a bye next week.

Brown’s comments make no sense. Champion player, but too much of a “footy bloke” and must not be the smartest guy they could put in media. It was a lawyer calling Buddy cowardly, the AFL then apologised.

Buddy’s action was a bit cowardly as he hit a guy not really expecting it, Smith’s was stupid but just in retaliation to Tuohy putting his own head in and even gave a little jumper punch to Smith at worst, but definitely put he fist to his face. Don’t see how it’s cowardly when they were both engaging each other, just a bit silly

Has anyone even watched the full vision with the proper side on view, there is zero impact. Medium impact? f*n please

Where can you see it? At first I only thought he tried to spook and intimidate him and Tuohy just happened to also move his head forward at the same time.

Tuohy's head drives forward prior to impact, and continues forward after they seperate. Honestly I think they have both gone to either bluff each other, or push their heads into the other as a form of intimidation, but the idiots did it simultaneously and ended up headbutting. Hilariously dumb incident and neither deserves suspension imo

Yeah this, they’re both pushing heads forward with force but not speed, Baz pulling away quickly from the behind angle looks really bad. Should be thrown out but we’ll see, the AFL won’t like it. Just a bit dumb from both but I think they were both cautious as to not actually use any motion to headbutt

The fact they embraced afterwards and had a laugh really says a lot. Didn't exactly see anything like that after Greene eye raked Bont. I honestly think Tuohy is a pretty good bloke and think him and Smith were genuinely laughing it off after the fact, not just brushing it aside because of the players code (using Greene for another example, when Neale dismissed it as no big deal when he'd clearly been eye raked)

Hahaha, yep that should only be a fine at worst seeing that. I think Tuohy’s comments will help if it needs to go to the tribunal, but they could both end up being fined really

Yeah my guess is both face a couple thousand in fines for engaging in a melee or whatever they want to label it. Neither worthy of suspension imo

Might not see you after tomorrow
Schofield got 1 week. Walters got 0. And both were clearer "headbutts" than this. If we don't challenge, and he doesn't get it reduced, we would have to have one of the most inept legal teams in the competition

Of course but the tribunal is a lot more fair than the MRP, don’t just accept this we’ll get it wiped easily
At minimum, it's very easily downgraded to 1 week since they mislabelled it as medium impact when it should've been low. I reckon it's a good shot of being dropped entirely, but worst case I'm expecting it's reduced to 1

How could they possibly label that medium? Joke man, the MRP once again has given us a ridiculous decision - how many times over the last few years have we copped it now?

What happened to the outcome being the driving factor, you could hit a bloke with a baseball bat if he didn’t get concussed you’d get off - but apparently not this time?

Cos that’s so much worse than kicking people in the face studs up or eye gouging. Absolute muppets running the show.

Agreed minimum we’d get it down to 1, and there’s no downside now is there as I believe it can’t go to 3 weeks so why wouldn’t we? Crazy if we don’t

If the club challenges this and they should good chance it get’s reduced to 1 week

Was always going to be 2 weeks (medium impact) because it was hard enough to draw blood. At best they could argue it down to 1 (low impact), but really what's the point? I can't see him getting off even with Tuohy instigating it, Tuohy copped a fine which is fair.

Piss off! Surely we have to appeal, but as they have 2, if anything we may only get it down to 1 week when it should be thrown out.

Need to find rulings of more contact than that which were graded as low impact

Eade was a better coach, no way did we have a better list for his run of sustained top 4 finishes - we’re also up against better teams than the trash getting around at the top of the ladder at the moment.
I'd take Higgins, Johnno, Smith, Griff, Cooney, Boyd, Cross, Gilbee, Hargrave, Lake, Morris, Picken, Murph, Eagleton and Gia from that side.

From our current side I'd take Bont, Macrae, Treloar, Naughton, Smith, Dale, Libba, Duryea, Daniel. Maybe Keath.

Fair difference.
