What They're Saying - The Bulldogs Media Thread - Part 4

The show for me is so forced and contrived, much like trade period itself.

Really?

I was in tears for half of the film. It was just so raw and both the agents and players were so vulnerable. It was incredible to hear them open up about how hard their lives are and the stress they go through. When Colin Young was running down that hallway at the end my heart was in my throat because you knew he was pushing himself beyond his limits due to the pure love he has for his client. He knew that Rory didn't get traded last period and he was going to literally give himself a heart attack if that's what it took to make the trade happen. I thought the whole thing was just so inspiring and it really showed the full spectrum of emotion that they go through. The documentary really held nothing back and didn't pull any punches. I know many will find it confronting but I found it incredibly brave and at the end I gave the whole cast a 27-minute standing ovation.

Any danger of any former players not shitting on the club afterwards?
Hardly shitting on the club. What he said was exactly what happened. Jeez if we can't cop a bit of simple honesty where are we at?

Its unlike a manager to hose down interest in his own client - youd think he would at least be non-commital for the sake of contract leverage.

I wish schache all the best and if he cant make it at melbourne, he wont make it anywhere - they are a great side and they get a lot of inside 50s into a spacious forward line, unlike us.

He was still somewhat non-commital. Naughton’s next contract probably hasn’t even been on his mind given it’s still 2 years away so his manager just shutting it down early so there’s no external noise this season.

I think people are taking my comment the wrong way, you included.

He had plenty of chances and rarely took them. Not all his own fault as he was moved around way too much, sometimes he was undeservedly dropped and others weren’t as pointed out, but this interview made it seem it was more of the clubs doing than his own

I had Stan for a few years and over the past few months I realised I hadn't used it once.

I cancelled my subscription a few weeks ago and now this 'Show me the money' doco comes out which I'm very interested in. I loved season one.

How typical.

The manager of Western Bulldogs spearhead Aaron Naughton has silence whispers that the Western Australian will be making his way home during this year's trade period, claiming the 23-year-old "loves the Bulldogs".

Recruited from WAFL side Peel Thunderwith the ninth pick of the 2017 AFL Draft, Naughton has played 100 games in red, white and blue, earning goalkicking honours last season at the Kennel.

While originally born in Victoria, the 195cm target has called the West home for much of his life. And though recently linked with a shift to join the Dockers' blossoming forward as early as this year, Naughton's manager, Andrew McDougall of Corporate Sports Australia, poured cold water on claims.
“I have spoken to Aaron a number of times over the break and he's still got two years to run on his contract. He loves the Bulldogs, loves the footy club and he's just really looking forward to the year,” McDougall told News Corp.

Contracted at the Whitten Oval until the cessation of the 2024 season, Naughton has security on Barkly Street for another 18 months. And while the Dogs have their main offensive target under lock and key, the club remains keen to extend ties with the headband-wearing forward.

“He has still got a bit of time to play out before the decisions are made either way (at the end of 2025), so at this stage, he's really happy and setting some strong goals at the club with new additions to the Bulldogs. He is in a really good spot at the moment," McDougall added.
Last week, both Naughton and Port Adelaide's Mitch Georgiades were listed as being "very firmly" on the Dockers' radar by 7News' Ryan Daniels. However, when pressed further on the likelihood of Naughton playing in purple next season, McDougall stated interest may be present but a desire to move was not.

“It is extremely unlikely for anything to happen this year with two years left on his contract. Aaron is in really good hands with the club and also really happy at the club and with his teammates. He loves the footy club," the former Eagle and Dog turned player manager said.

“Both Aaron and Tim (English) are out of contract for 2024. Both are from WA are both are happy at the Western Bulldogs. I'm sure not only WA clubs but a number of clubs will inquire about both players over the next two years.”
Although Naughton remains the main man in Luke Beveridge's forward line, the Pups have multiple mouths ahead of the ball in 2023, with blue-chip youngster Jamarra Ugle-Hagan roaming within forward 50, as well as fellow CSA clients in Rory Lobb and English.

“With Rory in tandem with Aaron they will have to put a solid defender on him too and they have big Timmy English pushing forward from the ruck, so it's a really good three-way team, and Jamara is coming along too so having Rory there with Aaron is a really good bonus for the club and Aaron, who won't always have three players on him," McDougall plotted.

Naughton and the Bulldogs are fixtured to face North Melbourne at Princes Park on Saturday afternoon in both club's final pre-season hitout.

The Dogs will open their 2023 season proper when facing recent rivals Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday, March 18.

How did I take "Any danger of any former players not shitting on the club afterwards?" the wrong way? I mean, how many ways are there to take that question?

Peter Bell has also said they have interest in Clayton Oliver, Shai Bolton, Callum Mills, Tom Green, Will Ashcroft and Connor Rozee.

AFLMedia is the journalistic equivalent of The Human Centipede.

Somebody writes an entirely baseless story made entirely out of the hopes and dreams.

Somebody takes it seriously and writes an article designed to refute those baseless hopes and dreams.

Somebody needs to generate some columns inches during trade week and writes an article about a club having an interest in a contracted gun.

Its the cycle of shit that they rely upon for sustenance.

I don't think anyone getting annoyed by Shaq's comments should later complain that footballers are robots who don't say anything.
I actually like a bit of colour in player comments.

Peter Bell. He's almost bordering on an opinion-piece himself, rather than sticking to list management. Might as well say he had a dream they won the 2023 flag.

Naughton will sign a long-term extension before the end of this year. He and JUH are, to coin a new expression "more than brothers, less than lovers". It's a platonic, but at the same time atomic, mutual admiration closed circle. I wouldn't be surprised if their future contracts have clauses dependent on the other's contract status.

(Sorry, for a second there I ventured into Scrag's erotic fiction territory - not sure what came over me!)

I can’t recall any former player of any club name drop an ex-teammate, have you? Like I said, he’s tried to deflect the blame onto the club a bit too much for the amount of blown chances he had. There was some honesty in there and of course we can take it, but it’s not really a good look on his part

If I'm not mistaken the article was written based off a discussion Schache was having with his manager in the Stan documentary.
It's a bit different to him making those comments to the media

That is a bit different then, but he should have known it was being recorded lol

He’ll probably get a decent chance based on the end of his VFL season and Melbourne getting rid of Weideman, but I think all Dogs fans wouldn’t mind him being named for round 1

Bell is selling hope to Freo fans and looking at addressing their obvious issues in the front half.

Again, I don't mind it. I like a bit more open dialogue in the AFL, especially without actual games to discuss.

Don't disagree on your open dialogue point, but having it shot down pretty quickly by McDougall makes it a bit of a pointless exercise. Certainly as an option while contracted, but McDougall seemed to imply, reading between the lines, that Naughton is happy long-term, beyond the current contract. So not sure what Bell's intent is in this case.

A thought bubble? "Yes Dockers* fans were are looking at tall forwards"

I suspect Naughty is behind only Bont in terms of priority signings so I don't expect to see him at Cash Converters anytime soon

* Almost had a horrific autocorrect incident just then

Didn’t really enjoy the fact the manager brought up English also being out of contract in 2024.

And both players attracting interest from clubs other than WA teams
Of course other clubs would show interest in them, given their respective age, position and talent. Doesn't mean they're going to land them.

Equally if either played for another club and we saw a need you'd hope that the club would be in their manager's ear from early on too.

Just about every single top level player coming off contract would get a message to their manager, via other clubs asking if they are obtainable, happy with contract situation etc. Don't think it makes a difference whether the manager mentions interest publicly on not. It is common knowledge really.

If we could trade English for a younger Josh Bruce-type, and Naughton for a mobile ruck/forward, we'd be laughing.
