What They're Saying - The Bulldogs Media Thread - Part 4

Apropos Jim Miller: I am old enough to see him play and he was part of one of our best centrelines, ie Miller,Hickey and Wearmouth.
I dont often post but:
1. Many BF posters have little idea, but must be allowed their opinion.
2. We need to keep Beveridge.
3. We need a CHB and another good ruckman.
4. Many of our team are overrated.
5. Go dogs.
That break in Jim’s career - are you able to confirm why it occurred? The original post said it was due to WW2 but my mail is the coach at the time refused to go with a two rucks strategy. Led to some kind of split in the club.

Exactly.

McNeil (IIRC) marked the Richards kick well inside the 50. He’s a reasonably good set shot so it was about a 70-80% chance of being a goal.

If the umpire had NOT paid the free to Richards we get a goal. As it turned out we got nothing because Geelong had swarmed back to their usual 16 players inside the d50 by the time Richards took his free.

I know it all happens very quickly so it’s not easy but the umpires need to have more sensitivity for the game rather than insist on rigid application of the letter of the law.
McNeil did not mark the ball.

The field umpire looked down field to see if we had marked it, saw that we hadn't and brought it back to where the free kick occurred.

Are you sure?

I was at the game and was pretty gleeful that McNeil (or whoever) was about to line up for a set shot after a mark. Then very pissed off that the umpire took it back to the wing.

Anyone got footage to confirm MYOBs recollection? (Or mine🙂)

Sliding doors. The sensitive-to-the-game umpire does nothing, McNeil fluffs the kick, out of bounds on the full, Geelong goal off a coast-to-coast from the free kick next to the behind post. 10 seconds later in the Matchday tread "That was clear free kick to to Richards. Don't these umpires know the rules ?"
Lol. You can say “sliding doors” to literally any umpiring decision. It doesn’t suddenly make the bad ones ok or something to be swept under the carpet.

We aren’t just talking about the impact on the result (IMO Geelong would probably still have won) we are talking about making the game fairer, more logical and easier to follow.

Pretty sure he did mark it but they called it back as it was a free kick for high before disposal, not for taking him out after the kick (which is a downfield free)

That's what tinkering with rules sets out to achieve. The AFL, Rules Committee and Umpires cop an never ending whack, we ought to cut them more slack.
Mmmm taste of cold steel for them Tony

It happens with 15 seconds left in the 3rd quarter, which is at 1.29.55 in to the video.

Looks like it should've been a free for front on contact.
Either way we were obviously disadvantaged by the free kick.

Tuohy ran his nail across his forehead, that was the mark on his forehead.

Bailey Smith needs to learn how to head butt. He should have put Tuohy in hospital with a broken nose. Forehead to forehead is pointless. Ask me how I know. In the USA you get charged with ADW.

Correct McNeil didn't mark it but had roved the ball and was free and about to snap it on his right foot... even if it was advantage rather than a free kick downfield we at least would have been advantaged.
It was a horrible decision and killed the momentum.

Some bad Bailey Smith press about to break.

Agreed. It’s not ideal but certainly not Carlisle / Bennel levels. Thankfully. If it is the photo that I saw.

Do you think the Club, Sponsors and AFL are going to think less of it because he’s showing a bag of rack to the camera as opposed to snorting a line?

It’s a terrible look regardless and he’s going to need to sort himself out.

Some painful months ahead for Baz.
