Jesus christ - what a load of crap...Cornes is correct. We made the GF and we now struggle to play finals. Bevo should be under immense pressure. Not making the top 4 once in 8 years is a joke.
lets be honest here. Bevo has got lucky to make both GFs. Eade and Wallace not so. We were a 50 metre penalty against JJ which was there in the 16 prelim from losing. Against Lions in the semi we had the run of the green from the umps and a great defensive effort and a bit of luck against Cameron.
Wallace was an incorrect goal adjudication away and Eade got smashed by the umps against the saints in the prelim. Both Eade and Wallace got us in the top 4 multiple times with a vastly inferior side.
I do not like Cornes but we should not let our personal bias against someone when they are stating the facts.
Also, Bevo has been intimidating the media for a long time and many are reluctant to question him.
Whilst I guess by the letter of the law it's not downfield but the team receiving the free should not be disadvantaged the way we were. Common sense should have prevailed.Nah. Its a moot point because the umpire made the correct call in the Richards incident. Robbo is just wrong. For it to have been paid downfield, contact needed to have occurred after he disposed of the ball - the replay showed it was clearly before he kicked it.

It's actually an embarrassing take from Robbo who is should know the rules of the game he writes about.
You can be annoyed about the rule, given it likely cost us, but not the decision itself.

The thing that I don't really get about the Weightman pile on is that the footage of him 'staging' shows that he is pushed in the back. He clearly is exaggerating the contact but the contact is there and it is enough to affect his ability to mark the ball. This is how bad footy has got. I agree with Mark Robinson! See #6
The Tackle: Mark Robinson’s likes and dislikes from round 12 of the 2022 AFL season
DISLIKES
1. Melbourne now bleeds
2. Irrelevant North
Cody Weightman is a super talent, but he has one big issue. Picture: Getty Images
3. Cody Red
In the week Trent Cotchin had his character unfairly questioned by being accused of acting, Bulldog Cody Weightman is the real deal when it comes to playing for free kicks. There’s something undignified about choosing to throw yourself forward in search of a free kick and not absolutely contesting the play on its merits. Weightman stood out on Friday night because the rest of his teammates competed for every ball like it was their last, whereas young Weightman, at times, played for the free kick which meant he not only didn’t contest the ball when he was flopping but he was out of the next play because he was on the ground. It’s a flaw in his game. He’s a talent, no doubt, and, when his focus is the ball, he applies himself to the point of near exhaustion. But that flopping and/or accentuating contact, nah, that’s not good for him or the sport.
4. Jack’s just as bad

5. Lost momentum
Friday night. Second quarter. Geelong in control. Either Tom Hawkins was too unselfish with ball in hand or simply lairising. He took a mark about 40m out and, instead of calming the waters and taking a shot at goal, Hawkins played on and kicked it, on his left foot, to teammate Rhys Stanley in the goalsquare. It didn’t work. It was a momentum shaker. Hawkins needed to kick the goal but, instead, the Bulldogs scrambled to save that play and then, after that, scrambled to try to win the game. In what was a terrific match, they ultimately failed. If they succeeded, Hawkins would still be asking himself: Why didn’t I have a shot at goal?

6. What constitutes a free kick?
Dissent continues to pop up its head – Adam Treloar was stiff on Friday night – and free kicks down the field continue to be a lottery. On Friday night, Rhys Stanley hit Ed Richards after Richards had kicked the ball and, instead of a free kick paid in the Dogs’ F50, the umpire ruled that it had to be taken back at the spot he was knocked over. Two things happened. The Dogs were denied a shot at goal, and Tom Liberatore sought justice with Stanley, which led to a scuffle, which led to Bailey Smith headbutting Zac Tuohy. If the free kick was paid downfield, Libba might’ve kept this nose out of it, which meant Smith wouldn’t have delivered the headbutt. All because the umpire didn’t pay down the ground.
And then you have a big doofus like Porkins who flat out pushes his opponent in the back all gameThe thing that I don't really get about the Weightman pile on is that the footage of him 'staging' shows that he is pushed in the back. He clearly is exaggerating the contact but the contact is there and it is enough to affect his ability to mark the ball.
It is something that defenders, and some forwards, are allowed to get away with even though it is outside the rules.
If the umpires were better at identifying marking interference by defenders then there might be less "staging".
The way that the game is played and officiated these days means it is becoming increasingly difficult to create something out of a contested situation. Umpires are sweating on holding the ball and often paying it for players who have had no prior opportunity to dispose of the ball so more players are either going for the ball and trying to draw a free kick or waiting for their opponent to get it and trying to pin an arm to gain a free kick that way. Free kicks are becoming a more important in determining results and good play less so. For me it is really sucking the enjoyment out of the game.
No current season stats available
Yeah the dissent rule and the inconsistency in its application is infuriating. Umpires can pay dissent at any time, not just only when a free is paid against someone.
The guy is a moron then.Cornes is doing his best to get a reaction from Beveridge. That's all he wants then he can play the victim card.
Apropos Jim Miller: I am old enough to see him play and he was part of one of our best centrelines, ie Miller,Hickey and Wearmouth. The guy is a moron then.
Everyone knows the best way to get a rise out of Beveridge is to talk shit about one of the players.
Apropos Jim Miller: I am old enough to see him play and he was part of one of our best centrelines, ie Miller,Hickey and Wearmouth.
I dont often post but:
1. Many BF posters have little idea, but must be allowed their opinion.
2. We need to keep Beveridge.
3. We need a CHB and another good ruckman.
4. Many of our team are overrated.
5. Go dogs.

Awesome! I saw his grand daughter posted about him on twitter but didn’t give his name Good on him!
His first goal of the match forearm across Gardeners back and clean pushed him under the ball. Commentators nearly stroking themselves Porkins too strong in the contest, difference in side by side test of strength but to be allowed to just push opponents out of the way from behind that he regularly get away with is just mind numbingly stupid. And then you have a big doofus like Porkins who flat out pushes his opponent in the back all game
Exactly.Whilst I guess by the letter of the law it's not downfield but the team receiving the free should not be disadvantaged the way we were. Common sense should have prevailed.
What's to stop players doing it as time wasting tactic otherwise.
Speaking of bereft, I've just had a look at the Hun while in my favourite coffee joint...Geez…have you guys not noticed that the cowards in the AFLMedia landscape love nothing more than a good pile on? The are so bereft of original voices that Kane Cornes has gone from a thinly veiled click bait troll to now being on the leading edge of setting narratives. It’s yet another example of how poorly served we are for quality content from a band of tame followers willing to allow anybody lead. Even a campaigner like Kane.
Sliding doors. The sensitive-to-the-game umpire does nothing, McNeil fluffs the kick, out of bounds on the full, Geelong goal off a coast-to-coast from the free kick next to the behind post. 10 seconds later in the Matchday tread "That was clear free kick to to Richards. Don't these umpires know the rules ?"Exactly.
McNeil (IIRC) marked the Richards kick well inside the 50. He’s a reasonably good set shot so it was about a 70-80% chance of being a goal.
If the umpire had NOT paid the free to Richards we get a goal. As it turned out we got nothing because Geelong had swarmed back to their usual 16 players inside the d50 by the time Richards took his free.
I know it all happens very quickly so it’s not easy but the umpires need to have more sensitivity for the game rather than insist on rigid application of the letter of the law.
