What They're Saying - The Bulldogs Media Thread - Part 4

I know a few members of the old guard at the club a bit, and they say they grudgingly admire the way the club has transformed into a well oiled machine administratively and financially, but that it’s losing sight of its roots.

Have seen some of Ahmeet’s responses to fan emails etc and I think he and others could learn a lot about respect for our supporters (even passionate nuffies).

It is starting to look like we’ve been quite brutal with some stalwarts in recent times (Wallis and Bubba). You could probably say it goes hand in hand with becoming a successful organisation, but I’m getting the impression we are going too far, and unnecessarily.

The thing is though, the club is accused of being a boys club at times and then is also accused of being harsh on a few favourite sons. We can’t have it both ways.

As always the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

The flag and more importantly the government just giving us a giant bag of cash and huge block of land had a lot to do with the financial turnaround. Much more so than a couple of execs that were in the right place at the right time.

The club could almost become a REIT/land management group.

What's an online forum for, if not to go off half-cocked and rage at something?

With this spell of fine weather there haven't been many clouds around lately.

Which reminds me ... you need to update your avatar, old man. Jong's retired.
I love my avatar nearly as much as I loved Jongy .......

I'd entertain the idea, however, if Norm De Guerre was up for it. I'd be prepared to pay .... 20👍 or 10 🤣

I'm thinking Bailey Smith instead of Jongy but I'd need to maintain the Simpsons image and theme. Only problem with a Bailey Smith one is he'll be at Geelong next year so I'll only get 6 weeks use out of it .... but what can ya do.

Smith like images on the Simspons are reasonably rare and infrequent. Ernst probably the closest

If the trade period goes as I have beseeched the universe, however, my avatar for next year will be

The narrative around Bubbas health is bullshit the fact of the matter is they sacked him and our weak as piss CEO did it over text

Well if that's correct (and I don't think we have much reason to doubt your info) then that's atrocious.

If we end up with no real senior, experienced assistants coming in after handling the club exit of a dyed in the wool clubman like this then I think a few people might be completely out on this administration.

mate its a job and in 1945 your job was secure and if you did your job well you had a job for life Sorry to inform you those days are long long gone ,a job is just something you do and if your employer doesn't want to keep you employed you no longer have a job it is sad but its true fact. Regarding being informed that you are no longer welcome at the company by a text again welcome to 2023

None of us have the full picture but it seems like when someone is not in favour they are treated with a lack of decency.

Could be wrong - ie maybe Wallis just heard what he wanted to hear or Bubba’s been underperforming and the club’s trying to give him a graceful exit.

Just appears the club could do better at execution at times.

Some previous people involved would likely have fumbled the opportunities or failed to capitalise on them but I take your point. I do believe KWW is a pretty smart operator and there are others who are at least financially sharp.

However we got where we are, it is obviously nice not having to pass the tin around year after year, playing in the odd GF and winning quite a lot.

Going by reporting lines, I would assume Bubba reports to Bevo, and Bevo reports to the head of football in Chris Grant. Head of football reports to the CEO.

So why would it be the CEO making the call?

There’s a post on “WOOF” about the club’s philosophy in coaching next season. I’ll post it in the relevant thread over here.

Rather than replace Bubba, the obvious odd-man out is Bains.
Bubba > Bevo > Grant
Need the whole hierarchy to be former team-mates, surely that would run smoothly!

Plus Darcy on the board.

Can't believe Darce and Turtle haven't roped Baker and Big Gilliga into roles yet, although Baker could be an assistant as early as October.

Reese Witherspoon GIF by SAG Awards

I passed on similar sentiments in a questionairre they sent either this or last year.

Is it true Laura Dern is a closet Bulldogs fan? Liam Hemsworth got to know her well when filming Lonely Planet - surely they discussed AFL?! 😆

I will have to look up who Laura Dern is, lol. The main one is whatshername, isn't it?

As a male of a certain age, I was a fan of her father Bruce Dern for his acting (featured in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood modt recently, but stretches back to the late 60s), but a fan of Laura as well - appeared in parts of the Star Wars franchise and several Jurassic Park instalments, amongst others. I haven't seen Lonely Planet - but females in my family report Liam and Laura did more than talk on-screen apparently.
Yes, that's Reese/Reece(??) Witherspoon at the front.

I must add that it is a tough call. Being an oldie, I do miss a closer connection than what I felt in those days. Not that I was part of the club in anyway, but I do remember Best & Fairests being held upstairs in the 'new' building and for some reason you could just rock up on the afternoon it was being held and have a bevvy with Danny Southern at the bar. Not that this was great for the club either. They couldn't afford anything else - but I enjoyed it!

I'm not sure if that was before or after '89.

So feeling a bit alienated these days, I look around at all these Bulldog supporters and am thankful I don't have to care about it as much as i did back in '89 when we just wanted our footy team there - to respresent us; those looked down upon Westies.

Something is missing though. I can't put my finger on it. The Bulldog Tragician's last post leads me to believe they are sharing the same feelings....

It's probably just getting old....I feel sentimental about a lot of things that have changed...must happen to every generation.

I like Reece since that recent series with 'our Nic' (who's actually American).

Remember heading to a few functions at the club with family in the 90s and it had a real family vibe. I was a kid but the players were generally great. Certainly not at the Palladium. Of course, we also almost went under 3-4 times in my lifetime.

The whole AFL has moved away from the suburban, amateur feel. Still love watching us play and my boys have been offered no choice as to who they support. It’s definitely not the same accessible, loveable amateur-hour club it was though.
